According to you, all the department in physical Sciences are interchangeable with departments in the Faculty of Engineering.

Why don't we get rid of the faculty of Engineering? What do you say?

Ignorance is bliss. In your myopic mind, since the spelling is different it should mean they are completely different courses right? Hahaha...clueslesness once again.

Your stupidly is legendary.

Do you know that even with a First degree in Chemistry, a PGD in Chemical Engineering and a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering you still can't be licensed as an Engineer by COREN??

[/s]Oga, you are shifting gears to an unrelated topic, which shows how inconsistent you are in making logical arguments.

Please did I ever ask you to tell me the criteria for COREN or NSE?

I simply asked if you studied either chemistry or Chemical engineering, and till now, you have not answered. Which just goes to show how clueless you really are.

It all points to the fact that they are two unrelated field.

What exactly does a Chemical Engineering know about Chemistry

How many chemical engineers do you Know working in the pharmaceutical industry??

Bros, this has not answered the initial question. But I shall humor you by answering this question:

Chemical engineering is simply the application of engineering principles into chemistry. Which is why you will find basically all chemistry courses(Reaction kinetics, 1st-order reactions, 1/2 order reactions, analytical chemistry, Physical chemistry, organic chemistry and organo-mettalic chemistry) inside chemical engineering and vice versa.

You can think of it as a form of "applied chemistry " which relies heavily on the knowledge of engineering for it usefulness. The industries that make use of this knowledge are pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, refining technology, Gin and distillery, and Bio-engineering and a host of others.

P.S: I have a friend on Facebook who works with Roche and she is a chemical engineer.

Just go for food science ; I feel it might be more marketable than chemistry. But if you feel that chemistry is better(since it has a better name attached), then go for it. But remember to think well before making the choice. Do not be like us who regretted the choice we made all because we thought the name (chemical engineering) sounded cool

But I was told that food manufacturing companies do employ them?

Lol, what I mean by hard, it's a difficult course in school, you have to do engineering courses and normal science courses.

Underrated because people don't realise its value.

it depends on what you want after your studies. If you want graduate studies scholarship, chemistry is heavily funded. If you want to work in Food industry, production line then food science.

P. S : if you are not either of them, then shut up and learn.
and you feel you sound like a man than is ripe to learn abi

OP, Olamitide gives you a great advise. I will advise that you go for Chemistry (you have a greater opportunity ahead of you in research in Western world). Chemistry programmes in the US are well funded and they sought after bright African students. I believe, if you know what you are doing, a Chemist can find his feet, even in a food manufacturing company. But if you will put in for chemistry, DON'T make less than a 2:1. My guys in Chemistry here are getting Post Docs and Internships uo and down, while the rest departments are not having it rosy. If you will be a serious student, I can guide you through.

@The guy arguing that Chemistry and Chemical Engineering are the same... That is far from true. They aren't same. They are 2 different disciplines with scopes widely apart! Same applies to Electrical Engineering and Physics Electronics. Geology and Minning Engineering aren't even the same (lol). Please, don't argue such again and be humble enough to seek knowledge. Thanks.

Nothing surprises me any more on Nairaland. A self acclaimed Chemical Engineering graduate saying Chemical Engineering and Chemistry are the same thing? Sad.

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering are very different sir.

Moreover, Chemistry should be a 4year course in the Faculty of physical Sciences while FST is a 5year course in the Faculty of agricultural science/agriculture

FST in most of the first generation universities is in the faculty of engineering especially OAU and UI. OAU was the first institution to start the course in Nigeria 50years ago and was established under the Faculty of Engineering. Don’t know why is under the Faculty of Agriculture in some schools knowing fully well that FST can’t be studied without studying the engineering aspect of it.

food science and technology is better in terms of job prospects in Nigeria.

Industrial Chemistry, Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Chemistry.

Will choose this any day over Food Science Technology which some universities now dub Food and Nutrition Science

this your analysis does not hold. in my alma mater and others in the south, food science and technology is in faculty of agriculture whereas food engineering is in faculty of engineering. FST is a core agriculture discipline.

Hmmm. FST is a core agriculture discipline

Op can u define FST?

The Institute of Food Technologists defines food science as "the discipline in which the engineering, biological, and physical sciences are used to study the nature of foods, the causes of deterioration, the principles underlying food processing, and the improvement of foods for the consuming public".

Food Science is also multi-disciplinary field involving chemistry, biochemistry, nutrition, microbiology and engineering to give one the scientific knowledge to solve real problems associated with the many facets of the food system.

So what’s the course doing in the faculty of agriculture.

you should consider the context which I classified FST as an agricultural discipline. we have food engineering in faculty of engineering.

One thing u fail to know is that u can’t study the science of food without studying the engineering aspect of it.

As a food scientist u take science and engineering principles and apply them to the storage, processing, and distribution of food materials and other bio-products.

From the look of things I doubt it if u guys offered any engineering course during ur undergraduate days. To get a degree in Food Science and Technology at OAU (the first institution to start the course in the whole of Nigeria) u will offer most of the engineering courses (Elect, Mech, Chemical, Agric Engineering ... etc).

Honestly, I won't give you a definite answer. I am a Food technologist who have worked in the industry. Sometimes, roles that ordinary a food technologist should handle are given out to other disciplines like analytical chemist, microbiologist etc. I don't know if that's how developed world do theirs too.
