Doc, thank you for your numerous advice on this platform. Recently, I adopted an adolescent male Rottweiler and noticed that he scratches himself every now and then. On a closer look, I observed things that appear to be dandruff. The dog loses some hair perhaps due to the scratching. Pls, I need your advice on a quick intervention to save the dog from the condition. |

Pasi:Good morning sir, I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I'm suspecting mange. I'll suggest you get Armitraz bath and bath your dog with it every 2 weeks, then you can get to a clinic and let a professional administer Ivermectin injection for you, if not possible then you can stay with the Armitraz. Meanwhile, ensure your environment is also clean and separate infected dogs from non infected ones |

Hello our dear Vet. Dr, please what medicine and ointment can be administered to a dog with a painful wounded leg? Thanks. |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by Uzland: 12:37pm On May 02, 2021 |
Uzland:Please help!!! |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by seunH: 12:38pm On May 02, 2021 |
Uzland:Good afternoon sir, it depends on the extent of injury. But it would be better if you can quickly snap the injury site as to avoid misdiagnosis, then I'll tell you the next step. But meanwhile get cotton wool, methylated spirit, and Gentian Violet (GV) ready. |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by Uzland: 12:44pm On May 02, 2021 |
seunH:Okay, Doc. Thanks a lot for your response. I'll try to snap it later. Meanwhile the wound was as a result of an attack by someone with stick & stone, and he's been limping eversince. |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by seunH: 12:51pm On May 02, 2021 |
Uzland:Since it's an emergency let's go like this; 1) CLEAN THE AREA WITH CLEAN COTTON WOOL SOAKED IN METHYLATED SPIRIT OR MILD ANTISEPTIC SOAP 2) THEN APPLY GENTIAN VIOLET OVER THE WOUND AREA 3) GET TO THE CHEMIST AND ASK FOR A BROAD SPECTRUM ANTIBIOTICS AND A PAIN RELIVER Preferably Diclofenac® * GV is that purple ointment that is usually applied on wound, you can get it in a human pharmacy shop. I hope this helps!!!! |

Dear Doctor, Could you please kindly explain why dogs' system react wildly to change of food. This can sometimes be frustrating to pet owners though |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by seunH: 1:31pm On May 02, 2021 |
PetsAirways:Please give me some minutes, so that I'll be able to explain in details. I'll get back to you 1 Like |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by seunH: 5:58pm On May 02, 2021 |
PetsAirways:Sorry for the delay, I had an emergency. Many factors are responsible which could include; Type of food- Some food are naturally not compatible with the particular specie of dog Genetic- Some species of dogs are genetically wired against some particular food, hence feeding them with it may cause problems Age- The age of the dog determines too, at a particular age dog react wildlly to some food till they are matured Method of preparation- The way the food is prepared also determines how wildly a dog would react to the food. I hope this helps!!!! 1 Like |

seunH:Thank you so much for your detailed response, Dr. Kudos to you for your selfless and diligent work here on NL. Please can I also apply penicillin ointment? No. 3: Please is Ciprofloxacin + tinidazole okay as the broad-spectrum antibiotics? Thanks once again. |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by Uzland: 6:04pm On May 02, 2021 |
seunH:Of course I will. |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by Uzland: 6:10pm On May 02, 2021 |
seunH:Please, Dr, could I also message you privately? Thanks. |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by seunH: 6:17pm On May 02, 2021 |
Uzland:PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't apply penicillin ointment or any ointment at all. They will "cook" the wound i.e the ointment would provide a medium for bacterial proliferation. Ciprofloxacin + Tinidazole is too much, Ordinary Amoxicillin would suffice sir, you need not waste your money I hope this helps |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by Uzland: 6:49pm On May 02, 2021 |
seunH:Really! WOW! Thanks a lot, Dr. |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by Uzland: 6:57pm On May 02, 2021 |
seunH:Please how do I administer the medicine? Dissolve it in water and pour into his mouth? |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by seunH: 7:06pm On May 02, 2021 |
Uzland:Sorry, I made a mistake I felt you said penicillin powder, you can use your ointment but GV is better |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by seunH: 7:20pm On May 02, 2021 |
Uzland:just normal pop and swallow |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by Uzland: 7:46pm On May 02, 2021 |

Good evening dear vet. Pls I have a 7 months old Rot and he's neither barking nor showing any sign of aggression to strangers yet. I'm confused and getting fed up cuz I desire a guard dog. He's been in cage/leash with regular walk. Pls can Rot be that gentle? |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by pufframmy: 8:20am On May 15, 2021 |
lol am having same and same age too i dont understand her i can count her barking GreatDamife: |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by seunH: 9:01am On May 15, 2021 |
GreatDamife:Good morning sir, many factors may contribute to the above condition and they include the following; 1) The genetic predisposition of that particular dog. Some Rots may have a genetic predisposition that make unagressive which could be a trait passed on from parent, hence the breeder may be questioned 2) The environment of your Rot also matter, do you raise your Rot as a pet or as a guard dog? it is a decision most clients find difficult to make. Hence they tend to raise their dogs as a pet while they may have intentions to make the dog a guard dog later. As a result don't usually get the desired result later when they want to use as a guard dog Hence, avoid interaction between strangers and even friends with your dog and also avoid keeping your dogs indoors too much, they should be in their cage most times. This would go a long way in grooming them to be guard dogs I hope this helps!!!! |
Re: Talk To A Veterinarian by GreatDamife(m): 9:10am On May 15, 2021 |
seunH:Many thanks sir. He's always in the cage with little exposure to strangers
