They're criminals whether the money is government money or from thieves, they have no right to withdraw or spend it. I know two of my colleagues that are in prison for two months now for withdrawing from a money transferred into their account.

On Sunday, last two weeks my mom got a bank alert notification, someone sent her 3 million naira, she wasn't expecting money from anyone.

She was shocked, she called I and my younger sister. We couldn't believe it, so we waited for three days to see if the bank will reverse the money, they didn't, so I and my sister took our mom's ATM card to withdraw and test if the money was genuine.

We bought three phones from it. That's when we believed it was real. Then I transferred #50,000 to my bank and transferred #50k into my mom's other account which we used for foodstuffs.

On the fifth day the bank froze the remaining balance of the huge money sent. But no bank official or staff called my mom. That week passed, on the 3rd day of the second week, one lady called my mom by phone in the afternoon, she said her name is Sarah from so so bank.

My mom is not literate so they spoken in pidgin, she told my mom that she knows that my mom received a #3mil last two weeks and she has spent out of it. That the money was government money. Sarah told my mom to go to any nearest ........bank and write a mandate letter authorizing the bank to unfreeze the remaining #2mil in her acct and the bank will give us the beneficiary account which she will send the money back to. And we should return the money we spent out of it immediately.

When we got to my mom's bank, we went to customer agent area, instead of writing the mandate letter, we told the agent everything that happened leaving nothing untouched. the agent said we should give him the number of the staff that called us, when he called the Sarah with his phone, Sarah gave him another name, instead of introducing herself as Sarah, she said her name is Evelyn. She now told the agent to hold my mom down till she (Evelyn) gets to that bank to arrest my mom or whatever.

The agent said on what basis would he hold my mom down. The agent checked the description when the money was sent and he couldn't understand the description. He was saying how could this be government money. He told my mom to try and return the money spent and he told us to go.

The description on the transfer when it came in on Sunday was: "National Procurement of Scanners" #3million.

Is this truly a government money?

Nairalanders what are your opinions? Because my mom is scared, Sarah or Evelyn bullied her on the phone with jail time.

I don't know what to do.

Check out the definition of theft. 3 million is a lot of money for someone withdrawing N50 000 to buy a phone, they don't appear to be able to afford police or court wahala.

Don't let anyone scare or bully you about the mistakenly transfered money. Firstly the money is not government money because government don't deal with personal accounts when procuring items, secondly if by any chance the money was legit they would have informed the bank to do reversal immediately even before your mum got the alert, lastly go to the nearest so called bank and tell them to fix the money in your mom's name, then await what is next. Shikena!!!

It happened to my brother through an erroneous transfer, they will freeze the account after a complain only for a week whole giving out Ur number to the sender on plea after then unfreeze the account. The bank has no right to freeze Ur account without a court order or a criminal act by U.
Though, the money isn't yours but I can tell you that you won't pay a kobo spent.

Under our law . Spending that money is "stealing" do not mislead people.

By a similar token if you are childless and your neighbours child wanders into your yard you can adopt it and make it yours

The spending out of the money part is what I don't understand. Be careful, your account could have been used for money laundering. Honorable thing to do would have been to transfer your own real money to another account and leave the 3million untouched while you report to the affected bank to take due action by advising you on what to do to protect your name and yourself from troubles. It could be yahoo guys or gunpoint robbers that transfers to you.

They would not only return the full money, but all three of them would spend millions to bail themselves from Efcc custody and be arraigned to court

Refund the spent cash.
Dnt transfer any money to any account rather let the bank reverse the fund with same narration.

That's a laundered fund and the customer service girl using multiple identity has a hand in. They left it there and froze the account so she can give you a different account to transfer the money to. Once you make that mistake of transferring it yourself, you've been roped in problem already such that if that money gets investigated in future, they'll come for you.

Go and report to efcc asap, b4 them report una to efcc.

If the transfer was erroneous; the bank will not contact you to a”sign a mandate” rather they will reverse the transaction for the full amount and the account will have a negative balance.

Secondly, it was wrong of you to spend the money; that is theft! You should have reported to the bank.

Thirdly, you need to be careful. The account may have been used to commit fraud or a crime. Just imagine that someone is kidnapped and in order to receive the money, they make a transfer to a person and tell you to forward it. In the course of an investigation, the owner of that account will have a problem if they cannot prove they were not involved in the crime.

This is the reason why you should have reported the credit so at least it is on record that your reported it.

please let's know facts before we comment o. They ate not criminals anywhere in the world, they only become criminals when they say they aren't willing to return the money they've spent out of it. I heard this directly from a police commissioner mouth
He said if you received money into your account that you know isn't yours and you spend out of it, its not a criminal offense yet. It only becomes an offense when its clearly proven to you that the money was wrongfully paid into your account and you're adamant on returning the money plus the one you've spent. In fact he said you're by law entitled to a percentage of the money as compensation for returning it. O think the percentage was between 10% or 5%

If truly the sender made a mistake and he/she contact the bank to inform them about the error. Your bank might give the person your contact to plead and ask for your consent before they will transfer the money back and now it depends on your motive . if you have spent few chunk out of the money then you both will have an agreement how the fund will be pay back. Just show rumorse and accept you are willing to pay back then no problem..infact the bank will be happy to work with you but if you're proving stubborn and keep frustrating the effort to show up then you're now a criminal.


In this case,i believe the money was a goverment loot and the people incharge have shady plans too that's why they want it settled their own way which can still put the account holder in trouble cuz you will be the person to authorize the fund to be release to them so therefore you are indirectly involved!

That money was stolen � from someone account and your mum account was used to carry it out if your mum transfer the money to the account that was given by Sarah your mum become part of the crime and the account that she transfer will be untraceable. It's better ur mum informed the right authority to do a proper investigation.

It might have been erroneous transfer and it is for the purchase of scanners. It is best you go to the bank before they will involve enforcement agencies. That will be torment you would not want to experience as you will pay more than 220k you have spent.

They would pay the money. It's just a matter of time. It's likely an erroneous transfer with wrong account number. What they did is stealing. No two way about it.
