This is what happens when you have hard line religious extremists governing a country.

Forget about human rights

It's their family issue. Let them handle it. What did see expect from Buhari?

The only thing worse than a dictator is a dictator with religious extremists views. Let's have 2 more year of next level

This is pure human rights infringement.

Justice for Mubarak Bala !
I wrote this in one of my thesis that humans have no human rights the moment you recited the national pledge. Study more on John Locke. The individual surrenders all rights to a sovereign power in exchange of protection and service. In developed countries its called fundamental constitutional human rights. In Nigeria such rights do not exist except you are a Northerner.

In the face of such circumstances, can someone argue that there is no difference between how Bokoharam operates and how this present government operates? Can someone also argue that what some people in some quarters insinuate as a perpetual and systemic instalments of Islamic rule, otherwise known as islamization in Nigeria is not true? We need answers!

After a year in detention, Bala has not been brought before a court and his lawyers have not been informed of any charges against him

The followers of the religion of peace won't see this one, but if someone draws their Prophet now we will see 10 pages.

Someone is being forced to follow Islam yet you say there is no compulsion in religion?

Where is the outrage?

Shame

Maybe if religious people didn't kill, assault and imprison those who didn't believe we could all come together and stop this issue but as usual your love for your neighbour stops as soon as church service has ended.

The way NL's atheist community has ignored this case is baffling.
I understand that Nigeria isn't exactly the most open or tolerant society for non religious people, but atheists always seem to pick on soft targets like Christianity, while neglecting Islam which is an actual existential threat to their lives.

Practically ALL the atheists I know, have testified that they feel safer around Christians than they do around muslims.

That's because most atheists on this forum are former Christians who have witnessed the excesses from believers first hand.

Because most Western countries have a separation of church and state Christians can't kill atheists anymore.

If we allow theocratic individuals to gain power, I'm very sure many of the peaceful Christians will go back to the days of burning heretics.

Pity, truth is nobody cares about him because he's not a christian, in the average Nigerian Christian's heart, he wishes bala every ill luck he can get just as they wish anybody that identifies as an atheist ill luck. If you be atheist for this country, I'll advise you keep it on a low because people automatically hate you and are waiting for any bad thing to happen to you.

Excesses like having former Christians sentenced to death?

What are these mysterious excesses which ex Christian atheists in Nigeria have suffered which is similar to receiving the death penalty for rejecting Christianity?

Even in the past examples you cited from the West, the term "heretic" is not synonymous with "atheist"

You mean like how Leo Igwe was beaten and almost killed by an angry mob?

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/belief/2009/aug/08/nigeria-witch-children-polio

Or how his father was attacked and lost his eye? https://www.patheos.com/blogs/thefreethinker/2010/08/father-of-nigerian-humanist-activist-leo-igwe-loses-an-eye-in-a-vicious-attack/

Or how he was arrested and detained?
http://www.butterfliesandwheels.org/2011/my-arrest-in-uyo/

I personally have been beaten up for expressing my own views. Many don't say anything because they don't want to lose their jobs or be rendered homeless.

Nigeria still has blasphemy laws in place that contradict the constitution.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blasphemy_law_in_Nigeria#:~:text=Both%20systems%20can%20punish%20blasphemy,entitled%20%22Insult%20to%20religion%22

In some schools you can be expelled for expressing "atheistic ideas".

Even in the past examples you cited from the West, the term "heretic" is not synonymous with "atheist"

"Heretic" means "wrong teaching", meaning any teaching not approved by the church authorities.

Many people were killed for even slightly modifying Christianity and you expect atheists to be spared for rejection of the entire idea?

Just so you don't continue spouting that silly rhetoric, yes people were killed for being atheists.

Because belief in xtianity and lack thereof makes no difference. Xtians have no identifiable norms, values and morals. Xtian stands for nothing and therefore fall for anything.
