It’s a negotiation strategy...
They know they are bringing it to 250
So they’ll first throw out an absurd figure like 385
They will now let NLC look good by allowing them protest....make them self look good that they listened to our cries ... then bring it down to 250....

3 months later ...they will remove subsidy again...

Your brain is working! It is not just working, but working "clockwisely" well.

That's their tactics!

When people in positions of power have no vision but selfishly selfish and self-serving, that's the outcome!

In 2012, Nigerians were told that subsidy has to go. Nigerians protested, rioted, and the subsidy was brought back under a different name.

Now, we are at the point where we have no choice because

1.We are losing billions to smuggling of cheap fuel

2.We have virtually limited investment in new refienreis because no one is going to come and build refinereis with price controls so low

3.We are running out of spare cash to keep fuel prices low. Oil is not as high as it used to be

4.We don't have a high tax to gdp ratio to pay for subsidies

So, inasmuch as I don't like APC, and think they have failed...it is time we said goodbye to subsidy.

Or we keep on taking loans and more loans to make up for the money lost for paying subsides.

And look, we can remove Buhari tomorrow.,....we can bring back GEJ, we can split the country, we can do whatever...but it still does not change the fact that we cannot keep on subsidisng fuel, or lying to ourselves by partially removing subsidy and bringing it back when prices rise.

All our neighbours, including the oil producers pay higher

Time we faced reality.

P.S If you abuse me, I report you to the mods. And any questions will be met with the response: Go and read about subsidy and why it is bad...and also 'How should we fund a subsidy'. I have supported subsidy removal since 2012. And I think it is high time we woke up to the fact.

Again any abuse will be reported to the mods.

Prof. Akpan Ekpo, an economist, also expressed worry that a higher pump price would worsen the already high Nigeria’s misery index, which would escalate social upheavals. He suggested that the declining revenues leave the government with no options than to pull the fuel subsidy plug

What's this Akpan Ekpo actually saying ?

What ever it takes to move Nigeria forward even if it means buying fuel at #1000 I will gladly do.
Monthly fuel scarcity in Nigeria was a regular thing until Buhari came to power and for that I am glad.

Let's see how everything goes...

....

Well, subsidy is not a cause of the economic situation...but it is making it worse (Nigeria's economy is bad because Buhari has refused to diversify it. Diversification might have helped raise some revenue to keep subsides on fuel.....but that's a big if)

The truth is, since 2017, NNPC has been the one using its money to subsidse fuel...and it is doing so at a loss

Also, oil prices since 2014 have not been at the level that Nigeria needs to cater for its large populaiton, which is why we are taking loans like there is no tomorrow. So, there is no revenue to keep on paying for subsides (Even when oil was above $100 under GEJ, the fact that GEJ wated to remove subsidies shows that the money was not enough then. Now oil is below $70)

If we don't remove subsides now, we would end up taking even heavier loans to make up for the money we use to spend on subsides.

However removing subsides now...which cost above a trillion naira a year, if not more...would enable Nigeria to save money, and to reduce dependeincy on loans...and hopefully would attract more investment and jobs, and more revenue...since profits can be made in the oil sector.

The downside is that prices are going to rise, and things are going to get worse before they get better. Left to me, we should have removed subsidy in 2012. But Buhari and co won't let GEJ make the decision(I did not like PDP either...but I support any decision that is for our good...and subsidy removial would have been for our good then, and now)

Borrow fix the refineries, NO. Fulani man finds more economic importance borrowing to connect Niger Republic with railway.

Open up the seaports in the eastern flanks to cushion the pressure on lagos and cotonou, No. Bubu want to lock down borders in the south and open up the north with stroll in and get a Visa.

Allow competitive free market economy, No. It must be Dangote, Bua or Rano.

By the time this fulani man who allowed the economy a free fall within 6 months of being elected is done with Nigeria, ZoneBees will chant bring back our corruption.

For those who think subsidy was removed...

1.In 2012, and 2015 what happened was that subsides were partially removed.

2.In brief, prices are raised to a point where subsides can be paid at a level that is affrordable to governemnt

3.However, costs keep on rising...so subsides rise...

4.This reaches a point where subsides become unsustainable

5.So government riaises the price, and subsidy falls.....

6.In 2015, government even raised the price till subsidies went away...however, the cost of production of petrol price rose above the subsidy price, till at some point government had to pay subsides again to keep the selling price low.

7.This has been happening since the late 1980's.

8. Initially, prices were subsidsed to a level where NNPC was allowed to make a profit, albeit small...however from the late 1980's, prices were subsidised below NNPC 's prodction cost

9.This led to a serious issue eventually.....not enough profit....refinereis went to the dogs...because not enough cash to maintain

By removing the subsidy, it is hoped that the proifts made attract more investors into the refining business which would lead to prices falling naturally.

10. At the moment, NNPC is running severe losses to keep fuel subsidised. Nigeria has these options

1.Continue subsidisng fuel at a loss, till NNPC collapses

2.Raise taxes to subsidse fuel

3.Take more loans to subsidsie fuel

4.Hope that oil prices rise above $100 again

5.Take more loans and more loans.

(Again, any abuse will be reported to the mods. Sorry, but Nairaland needs to change)
so all this point you mentioned here is to give yourself hope of knowledge right well done.

You see eh, when tribalism and stupidity engulfs your soul, you will never understand that karma exist

Now, the Fulanis, hausa, yorubas, and igbos will suffer unnecessarily because some zombies and wailers supported incompetence of unimaginable proportions.

Shey them use sufferness curse Nigerians ? When will the masses ever enjoy good governance.

Truly, Nigeria system is design to continually put 80% masses in abject poverty, anything to inflict hardship on the masses is Nigerian government agenda.

Anyways Nigerians are used to suffering and smiling, they are not really complaining.

As a matter of fact, Nigerians are still in love with their oppressors they will still vote another person that will inflict sufferness and hardship on them.

Nigeria seems like a cursed country. What masses needs is revolution and that is the only way out.

Protest is the most important thing at the moment, if one naira is added we need to start an aggressive protest that will ensure going into the houses of every single political office holder and humbling them around the street for what they have achieved with their greed

Thank you, but I would be frank and state that I wish that we could subsidse oil to N40 or less per liter...

But that would chop almost all our budget...and leave us broke.

My only anger...is that this was not allowed to happen in 2012...or in 2006, or in 1993 when Nigeria was first warned. 2012 WAS OUR last warning. I did not like GEJ, but he made a lot of sense in trying to remove subsides then. Pity the people inb power now stopped him...in collabo with NLC.

Well, relaity has hit.

We are in big mess!!!

The truth is, subsidy is not sustainable anymore....The governors are clueless, no alternative source of money, except what they get from federation account, which largely depends of oil sales.

If FG continue to subsidize fuel, it means , no money in federation account to be shared with governors...and ultimately, NO SALARIES to State wprkforce.!!!

Big Wahala dey....If they now take the courage to remove subsidy, yes, there will be money to share in federation account and they will be able to pay salaries.....

Now the big one....If subsidy is removed, prices of petrol will skyrocket and other prices of common commodities , including transportation costs will INCREASE!!!

The workers salaries will remain the same, non government workers will have to pay through their nose with fixed income...Poverty level go increase...as a matter of fact, everything go scatter!!!

What is the solution Sincerely...I don't know!!!
