You should consider some machine learning and possibly AI to handle nuisances. High activity level is one of the signatures to look out for. Once they sign up with a new account, their activities are always very high. Build nightly processes to detect who is signing up and averaging very high posts per day every midnight. Also check who are topping lists of reported posts.
Using analog approach to process digital data may be too slow.

If you think somebody has ulterior motif, why not go and create your own nairaland. Grow it and see how it is.

There are only 4 supermods, domini.que, mukin.a, lala and mynd but the first two are literally not existing no more leaving everything to lala and mynd only. I can defend myself and also act on the things that I know how to act on. This is a false choice.

People need to know that we are ordinary human beings and treat us with basic respect. If I devote my life to a site for other people to enjoy and some of those people cannot show us basic human respect, then it sucks.

I've read the suggestions and I appreciate each and every one of them.

As for the spammers derailing threads, I think two proactive measures can me made.

One, a campaign should be launched on reportage of Spam posts. For maximum visibility and optimum productivity, it may be pinned to every section for some days. Once people report a post more than 15 times, it shouldn't only be invisible to them but to the reporter's followers as well. By so doing, the reporters and their followers have been saved from boredom induced by the spammers.

Two, a keyword search banning system should be introduced. Anyone that uses some particular keywords more than 10 times in a day should be banned lightly for like 6 hours.

Now to the primary purpose Of this thread, the parameters are quite okay. This is a forum, an anonymous one by establishment. One need not get a National ID card, or any Nationally accepted form of ID to register. Once that is introduced, the mandate has been jettisoned; the anonymous nature has been comprised.

What I think should be done is controlling the followers of Spammers and derailers. Their followership strength should be minimized by not allowing people to follow them. Once their followers have reduced or remained constant, the tendency of them extending their insane agenda will be lowered. Hence, the forum will be filled with people of sane minds. In effect, derailing will be a thing of the post.

Also, the way new accounts comment may be regulated. They shouldn't be allowed to post (or comment) on certain sections for some period of time, probation period. Once certified mentally fit, they may be given opportunity to explore more sections.

Fine, traffic must be made. But once quality people leave this thread out of frustration, they can't be got back.

You can't compare nairaland with quora, reddit or Twitter.
Nairaland isn't built from scratch. It's using an open source software. Integrating some of the features you mention might affect some functionalities. I don't see Seun as one those professional web developers though.
