REVEALED: The 24 Army Officers Buhari Bypassed Over Ethnic, Religious Sentiments To Appoint Lesser Qualified Yahaya As Army Chief

Checks by SaharaReporters on the army’s document showed that most of the officers in line of seniority following the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, are from the South-West, South-East or Christians.

President Muhammadu Buhari bypassed no fewer than 24 top senior Nigerian Army officers to appoint Major-General Farouk Yahaya as the Chief of the Army Staff, according to a document, Seniority Roll Nigerian Army Officers 2021 (Revised) obtained by SaharaReporters on Friday.

The President, by appointing Yahaya, hitherto the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East and from Regular Course 37, puts the 24 top army officers from Regular Courses 35 and 36, on the path of forceful retirement.

Military sources said Buhari might have appointed a less qualified Yahaya, from Sokoto State, based on the president’s usual ethnic and religious sentiments as seen in his other various appointments.

Checks by SaharaReporters on the army’s document showed that most of the officers in line of seniority following the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, are from the South-West, South-East or Christians.

Following Attahiru are: “Maj Generals J. O. Olawumi from Ekiti, J. O. Akomolafe from Kwara, C. O. Ude from Enugu, J. Oyefesobi from Ogun, M. O. Uzoh from Abia, C. C. Okonkwo from Imo, M. S. A. Aliyu from Zamfara, U. M. Muhammed from Niger and B. M. Shafa from Ogun.”

Others are: “N. E. Angbazo from Nasarawa, Y. P. Auta from Kebbi, A.S. Maikobi from Bauchi, B. Ahanotu from Anambra, S. A. Yaro from Bauchi, J. Sarham from Kano, H. E. Ayamasaowei from Bayelsa, O. F. Azinta from Enugu, B. A. Akinroluyo from Ondo, K. A. Y. Isiyaku from Niger, A. T. Haman from Borno, A. M. Aliyu from Gombe, H. P. Z. Vintekaba from Taraba, K. O. Kadiri from Lagos, and I. M. Yusuf from Yobe.”

While Olawumi and nine others - Akomolafe, Ude, Oyefesobi, Uzoh, Okonkwo, Aliyu, Muhammed, Shafa and Angbazo were promoted to the rank of Major General in 2016, Yahaya and others did not become Major Generals till 2017.

The new army chief, Yahaya, now 55 years old, was taken by the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps on September 22, 1990.

When Buhari appointed the present crop of service chiefs only in January, no fewer than 20 generals from the three services who were members of courses 34 and accepted 35 were retired to pave way for them.

They were course mates with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor from Course 34; late Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Ibrahim Attahiru from Course 35; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral A.Z Gambo, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, also from Course 35.

From as far back as 2015, as Buhari began to make his early appointments, there have been public outcries of nothernisation agenda which the President has done little or nothing to prove wrong with subsequent appointments.

In 2018, former President Olusegun Obasanjo wrote an open letter to Buhari, asking him not to bother to seek re-election.

In the letter, the former President cited among others, Buhari's “nepotistic deployment bordering on clannishness”. Also, a retired Colonel Abubakar Umar, former military governor of Kaduna State, accused Buhari of nepotism, saying it could tear the country apart.

“Nigeria has become dangerously polarised and risks sliding into crisis on account of your administration’s lopsided appointments, which continue to give undue preference to some sections of the country over others,” Umar said.

Let him continue appointing northerners in every available position. If he doesn't know he's just setting a dangerous precedence undecided

Another president will also come and him too will sideline the north (Hausa and Fulani)
Nah that time dem go know how painful it can be

Basically decapitating an Army that's currently fighting serious wars in different fronts of extremely well trained senior Army officers, just because he wants to put a man who will help him rig the coming elections! This man is unbelievable..

Before he died, the last Chief of Army staff talked about reducing the qualifications needed to be recruited into the army because of low enrollment! He also called for retired soldiers to be ready to be called back into action! Essentially, what it means is that the army is running short on manpower and needs help...

So what did a queer Commander In Chief do afterwards? Fire more Generals because he needs his "Choice Chief of Army staff"! You know what? Buhari is not yet done,.. by the time he's done dealing with this country, if you guys see "nkîta", you will call it "mpûta"..

Sahara Reporters can't stop lying. From the names mentioned, there are at least 10 northerners. Out of the 10 northerners, at least 6 of them might be Muslims. So what's Sahara Reporters insinuating now? What's the essence of this report?

When you weaken the ranks and files of the armed forces and civil services with this kind of appointments base on religious and tribal sentiment, and not merit and seniority, you have succesfully killed all aspirations for efficiency, commitment, patrotism and dedication to duty in nations workforce, with the resultant effect of sleezing, corruption, insecurity, economic collaps, break down of law and order and failure of governance as we'r seeing today in Nigeria, consequences of having a bigot in power,Nigeria is indeed in trouble.

It's his choice abeg.. Make dem retire

It's not bad . Actually, everyone has their favourites and would push up narratives to favour their candidates.

The CDS is 34rc and late COAS from 35rc. 6 months difference as NDA wasn't degree awarding then. It became degree awarding from 36rc. 34rc and 35rc will clock 35 years of service this year. If Attahiru had not died, they would also have been like their predecessors; Olonisakin and co who stayed beyond 35 years of service. Normally, it is best for a service chief to serve his tenure within the 35 years of service.

The new COAS is 37rc and will clock 35 years of service in 2023, same year a new President would come in and change them. This allows for normal career progression for everyone. Also, unlike secondary school, once your junior is appointed as head in the military, you have to retire. Staying means obeying his every command and him having the authority to lock you up if needed. The promotion in rank finalises his authority over his mates who might be his senior in terms of army number. Any mate of his that is dissatisfied will also put in paper.

Am not in anyway amazed with this coz it has been norms since the time of OBJ, GEJ compuslory retired almost 20 Generals for ihijirka to be appointed as Chief Of Army Staff and same with Buhari when he appointed Burantai. Buhari did well with the appointment of Attahiru despite he has just two Generals above him and with that he didn't retire any of them and they were working together with Attahiru b4 he died even I was expecting Buhari to appoint one of those guys which are on course 35 together with Attahiru but the President didn't reason with the way am thinking. Sahara Reporters are crying and av started publishing rubbish as if this is the first time something like this happened. So far so good, it had been good atmosphere in NA coz majority of them were happy with this appointment. If u check those list, most of the officers that were automatically Retired were mostly Northern Muslims, can anybody explain anything like tribalism here to me?? Same hausa Fulani pave way for the same Hausa Fulani....

Oga stop grammar. The Army Generals did not stop boko haram and bandits from taking over the country therefore they are useless. Let dem go, afterall new ones will be promoted. The president can only make a Confidant the COAS(I don't need to explain the reason to you). We wish Faruq Yahaya Success
