BREAKING: Five soldiers feared dead as unknown gunmen strike again in ImoPublished on May 28, 2021By Adindu Obialor

At least five soldiers are said to have been shot dead along Wetheral Road Owerri in Imo State as unknown gunmen attacked the area.

The incident happened in the late hours of Friday.

This is coming few days before the May 30th seat-at-home order given by the leader of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in commemoration of the Biafra Day.

According to an eyewitness, the bandits took the soldiers unaware and opened fire on them, killing five at a spot.

“Right now, five soldiers have been shot dead. Everyone is on the run. Wetheral Road, Nazi/Aba road, Government House Roundabout and all the link roads have been shut down.

“I personally saw the soldiers evacuating the corpses in a Hilux vehicle, there were five.

“The bandits have already taken off and shot sporadically in the air to scare people away.”

The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana’s number was not reachable as at the time of filing this report.

Same way America maintain her roads and bridges, taxes, boss, taxes.
It's a reform we are talking about right? they put all that into consideration when reforming the systems.
for example gas tax, when you fill up your car, you get charged tax, that money can be used for roads etc, toll gates, among other things.
Like right here in New York, when i pay my monthly gas bill, i see MTA tax, mta is our transit system, now why on earth is that on my gas bill, but it is, because those fools are running out of money to maintain the transit system.
So there are targeted areas they could focus on and get tax money, then direct that towards operating a more professional police force.
Tax laws should be strictly enforced in that country, over here when you get a letter from the IRS, you are about to wet yourself lol. they take their tax money even if you buy a pencil, because that money is Crucial to America's survival. One thing we haven't learned.
Here we pay local, federal and state taxes every single time we get our paychecks. naija could do the same. enforce those tax laws, make sure everyone that runs a business register such business and disclose their profits/losses etc, make low interest rate loans available to businesses, deduct social security payment from those paychecks every time you get paid, that money will then be there for you when you retire and don't have to rely on your children to feed you. grin
you will see billions come in. strict enforcement will do it, under that reform or restructuring.

We can drag this topic from now till tomorrow or even next month yet won't reach to a point of understanding/agreement because you don't understand the political workings of this present Nigeria.
I still have many citation to give why state police will not work under this present settings with many fighting groups showing their strength. Are you aware that the recent killing that claimed 30+ lives in benue state is not cause by Fulani bandits rather it's from their home grown militants ( gana boys) operating at kastina ala side. Then tell me how and where benue state that cannot transform their agricultural drive to mechanized farming get money to fund their security to combat both internal and external crises facing them.
Taxing their citizens won't even work because that state reeks of poverty to the extent that mud houses are in their large numbers in their capital city MARKURDI.

Dubailandlord ....
You quite know that expecting some states to raise money on their own will result to mass sack of many people in state civil service due to blockage of their normal oil money allocation they gets from FG.
Merge States like kastina, zamfara, kebbi and sokoto and they won't still fend for themselves.

How bullets fired by Oyo customs’ men chasing rice smugglers left families in sadness

Residents of Iseyin, Oyo State, are still grieving over the death of some people in the area allegedly felled by the bullets of trigger-happy men of the Nigerian Customs Service on Eid-el-Fitri.

Saturday PUNCH gathered that the dead were killed by men of the service pursuing a Sport Utility Vehicle loaded with suspected smuggled rice. The victims who had waited for the day with high hopes were denied their dreams by the killer officers. Their remains which further drew wailing from the villagers lay lifeless and drenched in their pool of blood on the dusty road.

The killings sparked an outrage and the customs base in the town was attacked by angry youths who were protesting against the mindless act. Some vehicles were torched to show their anger. Some of the residents who spoke with our correspondent justified the youth’s action noting that it wasn’t the first time customs men would shoot indiscriminately inside the town while pursuing smugglers.

The Onisiles in the community were one of the grieving families. Thirty-three-year-old Ibrahim Onisile was one of the slain youths. Onisile’s wife was said to have been delivered of a baby six weeks before he was killed. Other victims included 31-year-old Tobi Opeyemi; Abdullahi Abdulazeez, 32 and 34-year-old commercial tricycle rider, Timothy Gbadegesin.

It was gathered that Gbadegesin, a house painter turned commercial motorcycle rider popularly called okada, went to fix the tyres of his motorcycle when a bullet allegedly fired by the customs hit him and he died on the spot. A Hausa man selling watermelon identified as Umar Abu was also a victim.

The Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba AbdulGaniy Salau, who was miffed at the killings, issued a statement to condemn the act which he said was becoming many in his domain.

The monarch, who is a veterinary doctor, also appealed to the people not to violently react to the incident while also urging rice dealers in the area to always be law-abiding.

The monarch said, “We will no longer allow custom officers to continue wasting the lives of our promising young ones, who are our future and hope and so drastic steps shall be taken to look into the remote and the immediate causes of the killings.

“The Aseyin-in-Council is going to wade into the matter and we shall get to the root of it. I enjoin family members of the victims to repose confidence in the traditional institution because prompt actions are being taken to allow peace to reign permanently in the town.”

The monarch, when contacted by our correspondent to speak further on the killings and efforts of the town to ensure the prosecution of those responsible for the killings, said the community had raised a panel to carry out detailed investigation into the incident.

He said the service refused to abide by its Act which limits pursuing of smugglers to within 40 kilometer radius to a border. According to the monarch, Iseyin is more than 200 kilometers away from the nearest border to it. The monarch said the Sallah-day killings had brought sorrow to the bereaved families, adding that the killing of their breadwinners would worsen their poor living conditions.

The media aide to the Aseyin, Mr Semiu Azeez, told our correspondent that the situation in the bereaved families was terrible because many of those killed were youths who left behind wives, children and aged parents.

He said, “Onisile left a wife with a six-week-old baby. That is a terrible blow to the family. How will they cope with that considering the state of the economy?”

Reacting to the incident through a statement, the NCS claimed that some rice smugglers hired hoodlums to attack its officers on lawful duty and injured some of its officers in the process.

The statement, signed by Theophilus P Duniya on behalf of the Ag. Controller, F O U Zone ‘A, indicated that one of its injured officers was abducted by the hoodlums with his rifle and his colleagues in the process of rescuing him fired at the hoodlums and three of them were killed.

The statement read, “At about 1500 hours of Thursday, May 13, 2021 some daredevil smugglers mobilised themselves with the help of some thugs; attacked a patrol team serving with the Federal Operations Unit Zone A, who were on lawful duty at Iseyin.

“The officers who were on routine patrol intercepted two Nissan Pathfinder SUVs fully loaded with smuggled foreign parboiled rice at Iseyin. Sequel to the interception the officers were attacked by a mob who were mobilised by the smugglers. The mob attacked the officers with dangerous weapons which led to the infliction of serious injuries on two officers.

“They attempted to abduct one of the officers that was brutally attacked; who sustained deep cuts on his head and other parts of his body. The assailants had taken the injured officer with his rifle before his team members who acted in self-defence, shot at his suspected abductors leading to the death of three of them before he was rescued and taken for immediate medical attention.”

However, members of the bereaved families disagreed with NCS claims that those killed were hoodlums hired against customs officers. They noted that their loved ones killed by the men were neither rice dealers nor hoodlums. Many residents corroborated the claims of the grief-stricken families while accusing NCS of “fabricating falsehood to justify their act of wickedness.”

Speaking with our correspondent, Alhaji Rasaki Tijani, who is Gbadegesin’s uncle, told our correspondent in an interview that his nephew was neither a smuggler nor a rice trader. He said the deceased trained as a house painter but due to the country’s poor economic situation resorted to riding a commercial motorcycle.

He said the late Gbadegesin’s father died not long ago and his bereaved mother just completed the prescribed number of days to mourn her late husband before her son was also killed.

Tijani said, “Gbadegesin was my nephew. I am his father’s younger brother. My brother died recently and his wife just completed the required days to mourn her late husband. She was sick immediately after that and her children took her to hospital for treatment. She just came out and three days later, her son was shot dead. It has been difficult to console her. Killing the boy has thrown the family into a deep sorrow.

“He was a Christian and he decided to use okada to make some money in the afternoon on Eid-el-Fitri because he wanted to use the opportunity to make money as many people were in town that day. He went out around 2pm and his bike’s tyre got punctured. He took the motorcycle to where he would repair its tyre. He was there when customs men started shooting and was hit by a stray bullet and died. He was a young man. He had two wives; one had a boy and the other had two boys. Who will train the children now? Nobody can promise to assist because the situation is so bad that everybody is managing to live. We need help for the children. We are praying that God should raise helpers for the kids.’’

The mood in the Onisile compound was gloomy when our correspondent visited.

One of Onisile’s elder brothers, Alhaji Abdulateef Azeez, told our correspondent that the tragic incident had destabilised the entire family because nobody envisaged it.

He said, “The entire family has been mourning since the incident happened. We are praying to God to console everybody. The only child he left behind was less than 40 days old before he was killed. The wife and everybody in the family are in sorrow. It is unfortunate. We call on the government and on anyone who can help. We never thought this could happen. It was shocking but we have to accept our fate. But this type of killing should not be allowed to happen again. We don’t know who will be their next victim.”

The National President, Iseyin Development Union, Alhaji Bayo Raji, who also expressed anger over the killings, said the customs men had almost turned the town to a shooting range. Speaking in an interview with our correspondent, he said the killing of innocent residents by customs had lingered, adding that Iseyin people were ready to ensure that the trigger-happy-officers were punished according to the law.

He said, “Nobody has the right to take another person’s life except the court and the court will not order that innocent persons should be executed without trial. Killing of innocent residents by customs has become regular in Iseyin. We have had five of such cases in the past five years and four of them were by customs officers. Iseyin people are peace loving and I don’t know why they want to kill in our town. They shouldn’t turn Iseyin to a battlefield where they just kill anyhow and most times, they kill innocent people.

“If they are to shoot criminals, they should do that at the outskirts of the town. If they do that in the bush, the tendency to kill innocent people will be low and even shooting should not be the first action. Iseyin is over 250 kilometers away from the border with Benin Republic. We don’t want them in the town, they should be at the border. They are aggressive and kill anyhow believing they are above the law that is why it has continued unchecked.

“The people are peace loving and we are not saying smugglers should continue to undermine the economy, no, that is not what we are saying. Customs are government agents and they should do their job but not in a way that will end up killing innocent people whose interest they should be protecting. We have briefed lawyers and they are working to see that those who carried out the killings are brought to justice. We won’t allow this to go away like others. We want the grieving families to be compensated though no amount of money can buy life. More importantly, we don’t want a future occurrence of this in our town.”

Similarly, one of the youth leaders in Iseyin, Babajide Oniyo, told our correspondent that everything must be done to prevent a recurrence of the dastardly killings.

Oniyo said, “There should be periodic training, retraining and seminars for officers of the NCS on how to go about their duties, without killing, maiming or oppressing other citizens. Officers must be mandated to face their jobs and ensure arrests and interceptions are made only at borders and in the bush.

“Their area of jurisdiction must not be less than 40km away from borders, as enshrined in the Customs Act. In the event where they failed in their duties to make arrests at borders or in the bush, officers must be instructed to apply civil measures when trying an arrest in the middle of town.

“Regular mental checks should be carried out on every officer manning our borders, to ascertain their fitness and qualification for such assignment per time. More scientific modalities should be devised for better surveillance and arrest of the smugglers, instead of the use of firearms as it is practised in saner climes. Human lives should be valued above anything and any officer who violates the laid down guidelines should be punished according to the law.”

The state governor, Seyi Makinde, during his visit to Iseyin promised to give the bereaved families N1m each to enable them cope with economic hardship at the initial stage of their grief. Also, Senator Fatai Buhari representing Oyo North Senatorial District and a member of the House of Representatives representing the constituency Shina Peller, had taken up the fight to ensure justice for the slain constituents.

This madness in Iseyin will end when the people wants it to end. Person kill a member of una community, una dey burn just vehicles when una suppose dey engage them in a gun duel by now.

Almost every Nigerian security personnel are very rude and unreasonable. The only thing dey understand is violence and you can only send a clear message to them by unleashing a greater violence on them. All this protest and lamentation will stop nothing.

The issue in Iseyin is a recurring decimal that I am aware of for a few years now.

This is despite not being from the area.

It also happens that a current Senator who is either a retired ACG or DCG in Customs has warned the Service on the floor, in camera, even this year, to stop raiding markets and operating more than 40km from the border.

Disobedience, lawlessness, high handedness, corruption (sharing the spoils of the raid), misuse of official firearms, insufficient support from HQ (National or FOU as applies), insufficient manpower and a total misinterpretation of their role by the existing field officers are some of the reasons why stories like this are daily news.

The terrorists came in their numbers mounted on gun trucks and attempted to infiltrate the main entrance to the town.

“The highly spirited troops were right on hand to counter the move and inflicted humiliating defeat on the terrorists who abandoned their evil mission and took to their heels.

Some widows of soldiers killed in the decade-old war against Boko Haram fighters are currently lamenting the failure of the Ministry of Defence to pay them their husbands’ life insurance claims several years after their demise.

The widows, who spoke with Saturday PUNCH during separate interviews on condition anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter, said they fulfilled the requirements to qualify for the payments yet nothing was done. The dead soldiers were mostly officers in the Nigerian Army with ranks ranging from lieutenant to captain.

Speaking during an interview on Friday, one of the women who lost her husband to an ambush by terrorists who attacked 157 Battalion in Metele, Borno State, in 2018, said the situation had left her and her children in a thorny situation.

She said, “Some other widows and I wrote the defence ministry which is in charge of the insurance but there was no response. We have resorted to begging them. The sudden death of our husbands was a hard hit on us. We need help. The Federal Government should help us.’’

Another widow who was moved to tears as she narrated her ordeal to Saturday PUNCH said life had been extremely tough for her and her children since the death of her husband.

She noted that it was excruciating when the news got to her that her husband died at the battlefield. The woman said, “But that sadness has been compounded by the silence of the defence ministry on my late husband’s life insurance claim. It’s quite traumatic. It has been difficult to survive with my children. My husband was killed by insurgents on August 7, 2014 in Borno State. I went to the Army Headquarters many times to know when the insurance would be paid and they kept saying they were working towards it. It’s frustrating.’’

Saturday PUNCH gathered that the insurance under the “Group Life Assurance” is supervised by the Ministry of Defence mandates the widows to submit the required documents for onward processing of their late spouses’ life insurance claims. Saturday PUNCH learnt that the claims vary based on the ranks of the slain soldiers.

Section 4(5) of the Pension Reform Act 2014, provides that “every employer shall maintain a Group Life Insurance Policy in favour of each employee for a minimum of three times the annual total emolument of the employee and premium shall be paid not later than the date of commencement of the cover.”

Saturday PUNCH exclusively gathered that to commence processing for claims accruable to their husbands, each widow is to present a condolence letter, affidavit and declaration as next-of-kin, (from a magistrates’ court), death certificate (from a hospital), death notification including 12 passport photographs of the next-of-kin and the slain soldier among other requirements.

In the long-fight against insurgency, both the Nigerian Army and terrorists had recorded casualties. In one of the recent attacks, over 30 soldiers were killed in April when the Islamic State-aligned fighters ambushed a military convoy escorting weapons and overran a base in Mainok, Borno State. Also in the same month, troops killed at least 40 insurgents in the town of Dikwa, Borno State.

A widow, who said she was told that her husband died in December 2014 in Gombe State, added that all she was told when she inquired about the life insurance claim from the army was that they were resolving some issues associated with it.

She said, “It has not been easy taking care of my child. I have tried everything possible but there had been no positive response. There was a time I was told that the issues had not been resolved. They should help us and not let us suffer because our husbands died fighting for Nigeria.’’’

The pain of losing her husband in Gombe in 2014 is still fresh in the heart of another widow who noted that he was pregnant when the news of her husband’s death was broken to her.

The woman added, “The boy is now six years old. It has been me and my God. He (my husband) was killed in an ambush. We have tried to get the life insurance claim but it has been difficult. My children and I survive on the little I get selling confectioneries.”

Contacted for his comment on the matter, the Nigerian Army spokesman, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Yerima, said the payment process was ongoing, adding that the service was desirous of facilitating the insurance claims as soon as possible.

Yerima said, “We know that they (widows) need the money more than you do, so we are still processing the claims and as soon as it is done, they would be given the cheques.”

Asked how long the processes normally take, Yerima noted, “Our own is to process the payment and once this is done, they (beneficiaries) would be invited to pick up the cheques and you (media) will be invited to the cheques presentation ceremony.”

Commenting on the development, a human rights lawyer, Mr Jiti Ogunye, said the development was yet another sad indicator that the country doesn’t treat its own well.

Ogunye stated, “Soldiers prosecute wars successfully based on their weaponry, training, fighting spirit, morale and patriotism. Men of our armed forces may have the best weapons in the world (and we know they fall short in this aspect) and could be well trained. If, however, they lack motivation; if their morale is low and their fighting spirit is down, they can hardly succeed in vanquishing the enemy. And there can be no worse subverter of the fighting spirit, morale and motivation of soldiers than the knowledge that should they die in battle, making the supreme sacrifice, their family would be left in the lurch, their children would become abandoned orphans and their wives neglected widows. At that level, therefore, by abandoning the families of our slain soldiers, Nigeria is cutting its nose to spite its face.’’

He noted that at other level, the legal level, the non-payment of the insurance claims was illegal.

The lawyer added, “It is an inhuman breach of insurance contract. Our understanding is that the armed forces are not the insurers of the soldiers; all the same they played a key role in paying to the insurance companies or deducting monies from the salaries of the soldiers and remitting same as premiums. The armed forces should therefore be interested in ensuring that the claims of these fallen heroes are settled.

Two Nigerian air force personnel were shot dead yesterday night in Owerri by UGM.

Armed Bandits in the troubled Northern region of Nigeria are not only smiling to the bank with money collected as ransom from their Kidnap victims, they are also getting hooked and married. This video shows a newly married bandit couple observing the marriage rites while fellow bandits celebrate and applaud them. Check it out.

The country needs a leadership that is firm and decisive in dealing with the threat these bandits and terrorists have become to the continued existence of Nigeria. So many people are killed on a daily basis as a result of the activities of the bandits and terrorists. And here they are celebrating, smiling and laughing with guns and weapons all around. What a pitiable sight. The country's security forces should step up and nab this act in the jugular now.

Abeg who knows why the huge glass covering Oga's table?

Na shield abi wetin

I have seen Ministers such as Pantami, Saleh Mamman, of Communication and Power use that huge glass as a covid 19 barrier. Which also allows them to be more audible when speaking to their guest as they receive "Big men" visitors to their office due to their status. If you wear mask you might have had some people say you are not as audible with mask.

So they do not have to use face mask/ face shield in their own office.

Hope Air does not blow the coronavirus over the glass barrier grin grin

So i do not believe it is a bulletproof glass barrier protecting the COAS. Besides soldiers have access to AHQ but they or any visitor can't access the COAS office. Only few of his soldiers and officers do and they are all handpicked by him. They conduct security screening again after the initial screening to access the HQ

Notice the Tag with the COAS office on Attahiru ? Only those with it can access the COAS office freely. Those he choose personally.

Also notice how the glass in the COAS office has a little opening right at the middle, targeting his stomach precisely if a visitor would sit down. A bulletpoof glass barrier won't have that.
That is to pass things like documents or if the COAS will give you some dollars for the weekend grin grin

I still believe the solution now is negotiation between the FG and IPOB.

The issue now is what are they going to be negotiating....? These guys want out and the government is playing deaf...marriage that isn't working always calls for divorce...! It would help in curbing any volatile incident and possible injury or loss of lifes...!! The situation now is very complex and thanks to the Nigerian govt and the army....there are issues you dont approach with force and they failed over time recognising this fact...!!

Negotiation would have been possible when they where still carrying flag about and shouting on the street..but alas instead of talking to them they sent the army to crush them with all kind of coded operations...and some demented people where even hailing the army then and shouting kill them all...!!

Now the guy they kept beating and humiliating at every turn have find a way to get a gun...!!
Only the almighty know how it would end...!!! Same mistake with boko..12 years on people are still dying aimlessly...!! Nigeria matter dey tire person...They no dey ever listen to simple advice...when it turn bad they start gathering people for prayer and fasting....!!

I still believe negotiation is the only way to sort this out. If GMB was the one ruling Nigeria during the militancy period in the Niger Delta, there would have been a full blown war in the Niger Delta.

Today, Oduduwa Nation agitators stormed the idiroko border post protesting and even opened the border grin

As for me, GMB failure to address the herdsmen issue and some other issues like the END SARS protest is part of the reason we are where we are now. Imagine make civilians dey disarm custom officer for broad daylight.
