Colonialism only ended on paper it hasn't ended. I recently took up interest in African politics. France still thinks French speaking ecowas countries belong to it - this includes Mali.

The coup plotters hope to destroy French influence in Mali and make Mali truly independent of France - France doesn't want to leave Mali alone.

France has 5000 troops in Mali currently. The goal isn't to fight insurgents. The goal is to assert French control over Mali and keep Malian people subjugated.

The overthrown malian government is aligned with France who oppressed the Malians. The new government is sympathetic with Russia and it's hoped the alliance with Russia will break Malians free from France's evil influence.

If the Malian military didn't take over in Mali pending creation of an interim civil government, Mali would still in effect be a French colony!
