‘Passport Offices will open from 6am to 6pm to clear backlog’ – NIS


The Comptroller-General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr Muhammad Babandede, said passport issuing offices all over the country will stay open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily to clear the backlog of applications.

Babandede also announced an increase in its production capacity of the passport booklets to beat the May 31 deadline set to clear backlog of passport applications.

He announced this while briefing journalists on the NIS passport reforms and recruitment exercise on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that the passport production centres across the country were working round the clock to clear the backlogs before the commencement of the new passport regime on June 1.

NIS boss also gave assurance that the service had enough booklet, adding that a total of 23,903 passports were currently awaiting collection by the applicants.

According to him, more than 35,000 passports had been produced in the last few days, with about 22,840 collected, 23,903 not collected and 28 damaged.

“The major challenge we have now is not booklet but production capacity and we have added two production lines to Ikoyi and Ibadan centres,” he said.

He warned that the any officer involved in passports racketeering would be dealt with going forward, adding that the erring officers were partly responsible for the uncollected passports.

On recruitment, NIS boss said that the current recruitment exercise was the best ever in immigration and assured all applicants of transparency and fairness.

He said that the exercise was being carried out in the six geopolitical zones of the country to take 4,000 applicants out of 6,005 applicants invited.

Alright,I wanted to apply for renewal so I was advised to wait till first week of June .

I got a message to come for my passport at Alausa. It is DIY and I snapped on 17 the of may. I was supposed to go for collection on 26 the as indicated on my slip. Paid 29 thousand in total and it took 2 weeks. Am so happy right now

No one even respond to my post. I ask that after making payments online for administrative fee for a name change, how long does it takes for approval or will I go straight to submit the requested documents at HQ? PLEASE GUIDE ME THROUGH. I only have the acknowledge slip showing that the payment has been received, waiting for approval so I don't know whether I will need to submit the other documents before approving it or will wait for approval First. Anyone that pass through this stage should please guide me through.

The 1k is for court stamping.... Please be encouraged. DIY works....

Captured at the Ilorin office 1st of April and up until now I haven't received any message. I'm also about 80% sure I won't receive one in the coming days despite the new Passport regime starting tomorrow, giving some funny things I have observed at that Passport center. At this juncture and from what I have gathered from following events in the last couple of months, If I were to do this again, I'd choose one of the popular Passport centers, preferably Lagos. Those popular centers are the cynosure and are kind of careful in their dealings. Evidence abound on this thread and it's the same on the official Twitter page of people who captured late May and have received their Passport. But you see all those obscure centers, they don't care. Some are already hoarding booklets in anticipation of the commencement of the new regime. I even saw someone on Twitter saying he was told at the Ekiti Passport center that there are no booklets, lol. Another thing I want to mention is that those less popular Passport centers are the least friendly to DIY. I shouldn't be mentioning this, but after several back and forth with the handlers of the Immigration Twitter page, several emails that weren't returned, and a couple wasted weeks, I still had to part with 5000 Naira before I could be interviewed.

Congrats to your wife. I was captured still March. They keep saying there are no 32 paged booklets in Alausa. It is well ��

Maybe you should check on them today or call any contact if you have since today is the last day mandated to clear all backlogs.

I remember you kCatalyst. Thank you for coming through once again. I was there last week Friday. The officer I met at the gate denied me entry. He said I shouldn't bother checking back unless I receive a confirmation message, of which I haven't received any as of the time of writing (1:24PM).

I got a message from alausa yesterday to come pick up my passport ..strictly DIY...

Yeah DIY and it is for 32pages. Thank God I didn't drop one Kobo for anyone. I had challenge with my NIN and had to re register apart from that I paid 26000 and 3500 for name harmonisation.

I captured on 17th of may for 32pages passport at alausa. I didn't give a penny to anyone and my passport is ready. I am the one looking for time to pick it up

Don't mind the officer. A simple statement on the progress report would have suffice but instead they choose to frustrate people by refusal.
Though I'm not sure with this, but I think due to the order to clear backlogs, printing volume has been increased to meetup with deadline. However you know there isn't much assurance with Nigerian way of order and compliance..
I can just say you should only be hopeful that you get it soonest.
