Right from my secondary school days till this moment, those who know me understand that once there is a task to be completed, no sentiment will be pampered irrespective of who is involved.

For once in my life I hired competence over familiarity and it paid off . my first gaze at him, I saw responsibility and trust . I already hired him in my mind before the conversation started.
At times, the staff may not be familiar but could be recommended by someone familiar.
In such case I ensure that he write the application and go through the recruitment process, integrity and desire to learn and adherence to company policy on the job are what I watch out for in this group,
They may turn out good at times

1. Don't hire who you cannot fire.

2. Hire slowly, fire fast.

3. Integrity first before competence.

4. Sense of ownership is important. You can inculcate that in your staff by carefully letting them involved in areas they feel they shouldn't. Carefully, I said.

5. Be nice to your staff. Reward good performance.

6. Devise an easy means of reaching out to job seekers, there are plenty of them out there, honestly. You can do that through target adverts and use of agencies. Don't rely on recommendations.

7. Make sure the remuneration is worth the job they are doing.

8. Create peaceful and neat work environment. It takes more than salary to keep some good employees.

Be strong bro, you can still keep your promise to her by doing those things that will make her soul proud. Look inwards and let go of some bad attitude she had been complaining about, uphold those good things she encouraged you to do and above all live to become a man her soul will be proud of. When I lost my Dad I did same by going back to our days of struggling between father and son over do this and don't do that. I looked at most things from his own point and today I am grateful to God and to him for the journey so far.
My your mother's soul rest in peace. Take heart bro.

baba forget all these tips a friend of mind was doing everything u listed, his job was the kind he had to train up an employee even when u are a graduate. The employee was very honest, loyal, hardworking infact everything any employer would have wanted but because he wanted to be strict and all that crap he thought he could threaten the employee immediately he quited. Right now he can't find another one and the office remains locked unless he's at the office. Pls whenever you find someone loyal and faithful, ignore those emotional rules and nice to him too.

You carefully didn't state what transpired before he quit on you guys on the way... Funny narrative.

There are 2 sides to every story, no normal human being would had pulled such a stunt without any form of provocation.

Either you guys wronged him or Lagos traffic frustrated him(it takes some special mental strength for one not to snap at Lagos traffic for someone who isn't a resident)... Not everyone can handle Lagos traffic.

Either ways, I won't jump into conclusions because this thread was carefully crafted to suit one side...

I hope u there are not people here that hire experienced hands only to offer them jjc salary.
Be sure you will not get the best.
Or u may get the worst kind of behavior.

The rule is hire an experience hands,
Pay him for his experience level and tell him what to expect.

If u short-change an experienced hand,

You are indirectly telling him to look a way to buffer the pay by himself,
And be rest assured , he will do just that no matter the ethical or moral inclination he/she once had.

Good luck.

NB.

We do this alot in Nigeria & that why we do not make the kind of progress we ought to.

I have seen where they will hire experience hand , pay the guy crap salary and put him under a jjc.

As a fresh graduate, I opened a car wash with all my savings. I employed 5 people. When I left for my NYSC, I entrusted the running of the business with a seemingly responsible, elderly man.

I usually visited home from time to time and check on my business. Everything seemed fine until I started my Masters degree program immediately after my service.

I received an anonymous call that my Manager had opened a new car wash business literally right after my own and that some priests were there to bless and commission it. I couldn’t believe my ears.

I called my Manager who boldly admitted and there and then, I sacked him.

After the dismissal, he started calling my customers and trying to win them over

I have added no.6 to that list.

Your boss has no efficient means of recruitment. For a every good employee, there are 1000 better ones out there.

That is the reason big cooperations can stay decades, massively changing staff and still keep doing well. There is always a replacement for everyone, the challenge is in finding that replacement with ease.

This is funny...the same situation applies to some employees who work for a relative. Most times, because you are a relative to them, they want to treat you like trash... I was on my own when this cousin of mine started disturbing me to come and work for him. Because of his kind of person, I told him without mincing words that I wasn't interested in working with him the first time he talked to me about it. He kept disturbing me and even went as far as talking to my mom if she could convince me to start working for him... I still refused. He kept pestering me, promising me castles in the air of how I would be paid well, free lunch everyday, accommodation, etc. After much pressure from him, I decided to give it a try since I wasn't doing anything serious at home. I first smelt rat when he refused to tell me how much I would be paid. Him and his wife kept passing me about whenever I brought up the issue of salary.
My cousin only gave me some cash for the first two days of working and that was the last time I got anything for lunch from him... Initially, my cousin with his wife were painting the pictures of a multi million Naira online retail business they had and how they wanted someone to manage the Lagos office. They talked as if the office was ready but no one to work. I resumed work to find out that nothing has been put in place for work infact. Long story short, I started working at the middle of the month. after two weeks of working which was month end, they gave me, a graduate 5k as salary!! I began to wonder if they thought of paying me 10k - 15k monthly...i was mad!! I just locked up the empty store, gave them the key and walked out.

How about your dad? This is the right time to form a team if you guys were not one when she was alive. To be honest, no one will love you more than family, to an extent. You guys are each others backbone now Financially, emotionally, physically and otherwise. Work together to put smile on each other's faces, settle disputes quickly and be ready to protect one another outside. I dont know your age but welcome to the real world. Your mum could be taking care of somethings without your knowledge but now, you must paddle your own boat. Accept my condolence. With corporation and effective communication, you guys can make it work, trust me.

.

That's why it's good to here both sides of the story.
When I ever I want to hire someone to work for me, I always look for a he-win-I-win situation. If I am benefitting and the person is not benefitting, I won't go ahead because it will not be sustainable.
At a point , he will call it quit, especially at a point where u may be expecting to make it big.
Some people treat there employees like trash & expect great results.
While some employers understand that as you are using them to make progress, they also want to make progress.
There has to be a balance,

The ones that are good. Do you encourage them?

Well humans easily trust and love who don't have much regard for them.

It happens with hiring.

Some companies, the management will love and trust those of their ethnicity than another even if the person is a thief .
