I quit. I’m in Third Mainland and leaving the van with the keys here.

That was the call I received one weekend not long after launching my first business. To the bitterness situation, the van referenced was full of valuable merchandise, and I was 9 hours away in Enugu state.

And so started my long history of terrible hires.
Some background. I had started a business with a partner, and we were already stretched to the limit with time, money and stress. The van in question was in route to Lagos to deliver merchandise to new clients and needless to say, it never made it to the clients.

Immediately after receiving the call, I drove with my business partner overnight to Lagos Island to retrieve the van. Of course, like very entrepreneurial story, this one was more complicated. The delivery driver who abandoned our van and the merchandise was actually on his third task with our company. Yes, third.

When the driver originally applied for the position, he was a well-spoken, ambitious and genuinely seemed enthusiastic to join our smooth startup team. The first time we hired him, however, he did not show up for his first day, though he did call later and had a reasonably good excuse for missing. He demonstrated remorse and continued to express enthusiasm to be part of our team, so I gave him another chance.

Fool me once, shame on me. When his first day again came, he again never showed up. And again he called and had a seemingly valid reason for not coming. He begged for one more opportunity, and although I declined originally, but he was persistent. Again everything I knew had been taught, I gave him another chance.

Fool me twice, shame on me. This third time, he did show up for his first day and after a couple of months on the job and getting to know our operation, he seemed reliable. We then decided to give him the van keys to make the 9 hours trip to Lagos, meet with clients and deliver merchandise. He left and the next day, he called to tell us he quit.

Fool me thrice, shame on me you would say. Well what I remembered most about this incident were the debates between me and my business partner. Who from the start disagree with hiring this driver and certainly disagreed with giving him two more chances. It was a long quiet drive together down to Lagos and I left any remaining pride I had at home, because it will be sad to argue with my partner knowing fully well I was wrong from day one.

While everything turned out fine, we recovered the van with the merchandise intact and paid some Lagos hoodlums (Agbero) before our clients even knew anything was amiss.

Looking back on this delivery driver Mr. Tosan, I remember also having a bad feeling about him from the start, and certainly after not showing up the first time. My pride and desire to be right however got in the way of the rational decision to move on.

Today, I go more with gut feeling and will be the first person to admit when I am wrong.

Hiring is suppose to be a thing of joy, pride and satisfaction knowing you are helping someone, pay maybe small but knowing you are responsible for part of his living is a beauty.

But lately, the reverse is the case esp in small startups, it's a case of everyday fear and anxiety not knowing if that's staff is just gonna throw in the towel today, tomorrow or when.

... Long story short, you want to start small, you have to do everything your self until business is rock solid otherwise hiring will teach you a big lesson

Be sure you will not get the best.
Or u may get the worst kind of behavior.

The rule is hire an experience hands,
Pay him for his experience level and tell him what to expect.

If u short-change an experienced hand,

You are indirectly telling him to look a way to buffer the pay by himself,
And be rest assured , he will do just that no matter the ethical or moral inclination he/she once had.

I called my Manager who boldly admitted and there and then, I sacked him.

After the dismissal, he started calling my customers and trying to win them over

at least look for a suitable partner to manage the place for a share in the profits which they would eventually start cheating you.

Such businesses cannot be objectively run in your absence.

If you aren't there daily they'll kill it for you.

This is another point entirely.

From this point of view its survival not experience again. When the sellers are more than the buyers goods have to become cheap.

You cannot therefore blame an employer for applying market tactics to the Labour Market. Capitalism is all about profit.


That aside.. depends also on experience, despite the employment crunch I know peeps that are being chased with offers.

One guy was offered 230k almost 80k more than his current salary. he resigned, worked 2 months in the new place and after his second salary he was told his new pay would be 80k.

He resigned on the spot and was working again for 170 by the end of the month another new place.

So the trend also matters. Demand and supply.

Sorry about the loss of your beloved mother. No words can assuage your grief, but be assured you're not alone. We care and will remember you in our prayers. I commend you for reaching out to us; very commendable.

I'll love for you to search for near death experiences videos on youtube(at least YouTube has not been banned, lol). Watch as many as you can on the subject. The experiences can help you deal with your grief irrespective of your religious inclinations. Its my hope that it does.
Personally, I believe your mum is in a way better place. She's not dead, it's the body she inhabited that died. She lives on, and so will everyone of us.

I have added no.6 to that list.

Your boss has no efficient means of recruitment. For a every good employee, there are 1000 better ones out there.

That is the reason big cooperations can stay decades, massively changing staff and still keep doing well. There is always a replacement for everyone, the challenge is in finding that replacement with ease.

Big corporations don't hire and fire indiscriminately. One lesson I learnt in Facility Management frequent replcement of employees has cost implications on the company. It may not be noticeable but it is there.
