Villa wasn't far behind in Pichichi race on the 2 occasions. Scored 25 goals when Eto won it with 26 goals. Again scored 28 goals when Forlan won it with 32 goals.

More significantly, Villa won the Spanish player of the season award in 2005-06 which is a better indicator of individual impact than Pichichi. Forlan never won a player of the season award. So why can't we compare.

David Villa was a reliable striker highly sought after by top clubs. Forlan was reliable for only 2 seasons and grossly inconsistent in the others.

Not even in the same class for me.

We are talking about Forlan that helped Villarreal to UCL Semis at their very 1st attempt.

Same Forlan without Simeon as coach destroyed peak Liverpool with coach Benitez and peak Torres home and away, and dragged lowly rated Atletico to Europa title scoring all the goals in the final.

You think it's easy to win Europe's Golden Boot playing for two minor clubs? Villa may have won WC, but Forlan was the best player of the tournament.

As a footballer, if you are good enough, you will eventually find yourself among elite team mates. That Forlan was demoted from elite company to Europa-tier teams is an indicator of his class.

And Villareal of 05-06 was mainly powered by Riquelme and Marcos Senna. How many goals did Forlan score that UCL season? Less than 4 goals and you are calling that "carrying" when he doesn't assist much.

I'd say their world cup 2010 feats cancel each other. They both scored 5 goals. In fact Villa scored higher percentage of Spain's goals than Forlan did for Uruguay. Meanwhile, Villa's Euro 2008 was better than Forlan's Copa 2011.

Forlan is good but not in Villa's class.

I get you and that's quite right. It appears like most of the guys here actually rate Forlan above Villa and I am genuinely surprised to observe that.

My perception of Forlan went from extremely bad to trying to salvage career to hit and miss to decent striker with a one-off excellent season (2010). He was voted one of EPL's worst signings during his time there. For me, he was never a consistently reliable player.

Compare the above with D.Villa who burst onto the world class scene competing with Eto'o for Pichichi and scoring a 35 yard glorious free kick against Inter Milan in UCL. By 2010, David Villa was already considered one of the best 3 strikers in the world which made Barca go gung-ho for him. Forlan was never viewed in this light in professional circles which is why no top club made him their priority (not back-up o) throughout his career.

I'm sorry, but I even think Benzema is better than Forlan even with Diego's excellent WC 2010 and all. I wouldn't bat an eyelid if given a choice between the 2 before going for Benzema.

Forlan 128 goals in 240 games. No real super midfielder backup. (Riquelme was a Barca reject)

If you watch the Forlan video posted above, you'll realise most of Forlan's goals were GOLAZO and long range shots. He didn't receive killer passes before scoring.

Hmm, me I will choose Villa at Valencia o. Forlan had 2 very good La liga seasons interrupting several poor liga seasons, while Villa delivered goals more consistently across 5 seasons at Valencia. Didnt feel Villa much at Barca and ATM though.

Villa scored 186 liga goals. Forlan scored 128.
