Mary Leonard, Ambassador of the United States of America to Nigeria, on Monday, confirmed that Nigeria is in discussion with Twitter over suspension of its operations in Nigeria.

Leonard said this during a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, ambassadors and representatives of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland and the EU in Nigeria.

Onyeama had said the suspension of Twitter was in the interest of national security and peace.

He stressed that the objective of the ban was to advocate for a responsible use of social media platforms that would not destabilize the peace and unity of the country.

Reacting, Leonard thanked the Minister for inviting them for the meeting and expressed satisfaction that the federal government and Twitter were in talks.

She said the representatives were Nigeria’s strong partners on issues of security and they recognise the daunting task on the issues of security that confronts the country.

“We recognise that there are issues of irresponsible use of social media, but we remain firm in our position that free access to the ability to express self is very important and perhaps more important in troubled times,’’ NAN quoted her as saying.

She said many of the things Onyeama referred to, including incitements and violence, were crimes the Nigerian government had legitimate right to prosecute.

Leonard urged the federal government to use its judicial processes within the scope of respect for human rights and the rule of law to restrain such behaviours.

All this commotion just because of one tweet o.....JUST ONE. Buhari is petty as hell. I knew he was petty ever since he disabled his comment section a while ago. He's a total disgrace, even to womanhood. If you've been active on twitter, you'll see the level of mockery buhari is facing. They're even insulting his mother. BUHARI IS A WORLDWIDE DISGRACE.

The suspension wasn't really actually about Buhari's tweets that was deleted but about Twitter's new policy update and other social media..

FG has been warning about that since the beginning of the year.. Foreign companies can't impose unnecessary policies on us

Threat ke?
In as much as the FG went a bit overboard with the ban, plus the fact that Buhari is a disaster, I love the boldness and the gut they displayed in banning twitter. Not any country try what they did, moreso a developing nation.
Truth be told too, Tweeter need to thread well and they've learnt their lesson.

See the actual statement of position. But imagine the innuendos being reported by Nigerian "tabloids" about what happened.

SMH@ the present administration and political actors charlatans!
We are @a precipice where as a people our oppressors are willfully desecrating our fundamental human rights but keep milking us from our human responsibilities on a daily.
People are been killed in some states by marauding herdsmen yet the government is more interested in tweets ban and will rather allow bandits to get huge monies as ransome for kidnapping law abiding citizens!.

What is most disheartening is seeing young people support this clueless administration wittingly!

We need young visionary leaders.

The minimum requirement to restore Twitter back in Nigeria is an open apology and financial compensation from the host company. Anything less is not acceptable cool

Say no more!

The useless brain dead president with gworo balls must have been pissing his prayer mat since the envoys openly threatened to cut of loan supplies to his directionless government.

grin grin

Maybe the envoys even cut off the useless balls and chew only to find out it tastes like gworo.

Waiting for cursed animals to come and lie that the balls didn’t taste like gworo. cheesy grin

Those of you who ever think this ban will stand I pity your shortsightedness. How is that even possible in a Democratic nation in 2021?
