Retail LED lighting includes all the light sources that you use to make your space visible and highlight the product or store area. You can create a retail LED lighting plan by layering four different lighting types, combining a variety of different luminaires, and choosing light bulbs with brightness and tone.

In this article, we will look at different types of lighting, bulbs, and fixtures — as well as best practices for lighting stores — and your expected expenditure on lighting plans.

Why is store LED lighting important?

The LED lighting you choose when opening a retail store is an important part of your sales strategy. Effective retail LED lighting will make your store well-lit, easy to explore, and enhance your display by highlighting products. It can affect everything from the way people shop to what customers think of your business.

Let's take a look at the five steps to choosing and designing the lighting that best suits your retail space.

1. Know the types of store lighting

When lighting your space, you can layer four different types of lighting together to form a cohesive lighting strategy: accent lighting, task lighting, ambient lighting, and decorative lighting. Click on the tabs below to learn when to use each type of lighting.

2. Choose the right brightness and hue

There are two ways to measure the bulb: brightness and hue. As you might expect, brightness refers to the brightness of light. Hue refers to the color of light, which is also related to its temperature.

brightness
When searching for a bulb, the brightness is expressed in lumens. The relationship between brightness and lumens is simple: the greater the lumens, the greater the brightness.

Tone
For the hue or the color temperature of the bulb, you need to find the Kelvin number associated with the bulb. As the Kelvin number increases, the tone of your light will become colder; as the Kelvin number decreases, the tone of your light will become warmer.

3. Choose your bulb type

Once you have determined the type of light you want the bulb to emit, it's time to consider different bulb types. Generally speaking, when choosing a bulb type, no bulb is best for dim or bright uses, and also suitable for warm or cool colors. Today, you can use any bulb type to implement most lighting solutions.

When choosing the type of bulb to use, factors you need to consider include average cost, service life, energy efficiency, color range, and the type of store lighting that the bulb is most suitable for.

4. Choose your fixture

The three types of bulbs listed above can be used in a variety of lamps at any lumen and color temperature. Most retail store lighting combines several different types of lamps and various bulbs to provide the correct amount of light throughout the space.

5. Set up and price your store lighting

Now that you understand the basics, you are ready to integrate your retail store lighting plan by layering the four types of lighting using different lamps and uniform hues. The easiest way is to outline your lighting concept on the retail store floor plan. You can do this by using tracing paper on the blueprint of the store.

how does this work: Width x Length x Height of your sales floor = Total Cubic Area. Multiply that total by 2.5 to get the appropriate lumens needed to light your space.
