The U.S. Department of State condemned Nigeria's Twitter ban and its threat to arrest and prosecute Nigerians found using the app in a statement Thursday, saying the policy "has no place in a democracy."

Why it matters: The department requested that Nigeria's government respect its citizens’ right to freedom of expression and reverse the ban on the social media platform, which has been extremely popular in Africa's most populous nation.

Context: The country banned the platform after Twitter temporarily froze Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's account for violating its "abusive behavior" policy.

Nigeria's attorney general and minister of justice also directed the country's communications regulator and federal prosecutors over the weekend to start charging and arresting people who circumvent the ban through virtual private networks.

Twitter and other platforms are routinely used by citizens around the world to voice their dissent or concerns to their governments.

What they're saying: "Unduly restricting the ability of Nigerians to report, gather, and disseminate opinions and information has no place in a democracy," Ned Price, a spokesperson for the State Department, said.

"Freedom of expression and access to information both online and offline are foundational to prosperous and secure democratic societies," he added.

"We support Nigeria as it works towards unity, peace, and prosperity. As its partner, we call on the government to respect its citizens’ right to freedom of expression by reversing this suspension."

Dangote refinery will surely put some pressure of the Naira. During the lockdown, we were not importing or exporting anything, yet naira dey fall
Dangote will be buying Nigerian crude in naira, that's the deal proposed with the NNPC. Don't be surprised when his refinery becomes fully operational nothing much will change FOREx wise and even the price of PMS.

I guess niger republic is part of "one nigeria" now.
People wake up, buhari and his northern click do not believe in "one nigeria", all their actions have shown it, they are only exploiting the hell out of the south to further their personal ethnic agendas.

What buhari and his brothers are saying is "what is mine is mine and what is yours is debatable"

Exactly, all this CBN defending the Naira is just funding the importation of inflation.

All the currency to float then peg it when you have an alignment with the unofficial rate, we are spending whopping amounts of Forex to keep the Naira at artificial rates to the dollar, inflation has been largely unbothered by that.

Dangote's refinery would save Nigeria about $3bn of importation cost singlehandedly, Nigerians would be like

" hang on a minute, that's free $3bn to spend of needless importation and hoarding for Forex speculation"

Until we make currency speculation unpalatable, we would always continue to have forex problems

If you don't have a broader scope of how you view the world, comprehension and understanding would always have limitations.

Europe is doing well today because of how sophisticated infrastructure is, you can work in Germany and live in the Netherlands for instance. Buhari is not our problem, ethnic fundamentalism is.

Nigeria can very quickly position itself as a beacon in the region and beyond with unfettered access to the "economies of the hinterland" with the building of critical infrastructure such as this.

I'm sure you must have heard of the ACFTA agreement, Nigeria can be a source of raw materials, energy, human capital, steel, etc. Since we are talking about jobs here, double-digit growth, economic progress on a scale that has never been seen.

There is a scramble for the proverbial piece of the pie in Africa right now, even Saharan countries like Morroco are not left out(They recently tried, and failed to join the ECOWAS) why do you think that is?! Access to the free market!

Once the refinery starts operation, will be saving forex to the tune of millions of dollars everyday that would have been otherwise used to import refined oil products. When other refineries star ts operation, we will be exporting to other countries thereby earning more forex. The foreign reserves will increase in both cases and the naira will definitely gain in strength.

Benin republic and southern cameroon are more economically relevant than Niger republic, so you are talking in a void.

Many cities within nigeria are more economically relevant than niger republic, yet these cities are not well connected by train and we have to go and get trains to niger republic ?
Look, your man buhari has just confesses he did this because of his tribalism. What is there to debate ?

From what I can deduce from what he said(which I'm sure everybody thinks fairly would agree) Africa and Africans have locked ourselves out for far too long.

Barriers that didn't exist 200 years ago exist today because of the scourge of colonization.

We trade more with Europe and Southeast Asia than amongst ourselves.

Rectifying that oddity would help fasten economic integration, and provide the jobs that our populations desperately need.

The Lagos - Kano, Lagos - Calabar, Warri - Kano projects etc are all part of a wider project, the National railway Masterplan, they are only carried out in sections because of the paucity of funds

With a railway to Maradi, you could access Mali, Burkina faso, Chad etc landlocked countries that need access to the Sea, Nigeria could provide refined petroleum products, human capital, steel, consumer goods, Etc. have you thought about this too?

anyone with common sense gets what he meant. road and rail should link us all together within West Africa, and if financially feasible the entire continent. makes it easier for people and goods to get to their destination.
when tribalists accuse others of same. weird huh

Nigerian ports will serve as port of choice for some of these countries too because of reduced logistics cost due to the rail an improved speed of delivery rather than the Ports of Benin and Cameroon they currently use.

It seems, you are trying to defend and justify buhari's decision at all costs. There is always going to be a positif for any decision, indeed people are still arguing today that hitler's policies reduced joblessness to 0% and made transportation fluid.

The fact still remains that buhari is a biggot who just used southsouth money to bring his niger republic brothers closer and buhari made the confession. Devide Nigeria now !
