I'm talking wealthy people in the mold of Bill Gates, Jeff bezos, Jack ma, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren buffet, etc. None of them became wealthy by working a 9 to 5, or via climbing the corporate ladder. Their kind of wealth cannot be achieved by being an employee. That's the kind of wealth I am talking about (the kind that gets you on the Forbes list), and it certainly isn't for the vast majority. I also think that most people don't even want that kind of wealth anyway, because they lack that level of ambition and are contented with just getting by and meeting their basic needs.

The post says Nigeria. If we need to be in the category of Gates, Mark, Jeff etc before being wealthy, then nobody is wealthy in Nigeria, including entrepreneurs!

Don't raise an argument to a bar that is "oversyllabus".

I fly for meetings and weekend retreats on the job. Not your regular 9 to 5. At that level you work on deliverables not hours. Once you meet them you can actually take everyone out to party, on the job, while getting paid

9 to 5 is an American invention, and you should study its meaning. Not all office jobs are 9 to 5.

In the US you go to work by 9am, mostly due to daylight savings cos it's still dark by 7am here sometimes, and you do 8 hours per day. A typical full time worker does a 40 hr week (mon to fri) and are paid or calculated weekly. That's where we get 9 to 5 mantra from.

Those corporate wall street jobs you talked about are not 9 to 5. They do 80 hr weeks at entry level, take work home etc. At the mgt level you come to work and leave according to your planned schedule.
You work with regulators, shareholders, suppliers, franchises etc. At that level it's no longer 9 to 5.

You can NEVER be wealthy with 9 to 5.

So if my PA travels around with me to meetings, meeting regulators, shareholders etc (and still earning her N250k), she is no longer a 9-5 worker?

Replace those Americans I listed with the wealthiest Nigerians and my point still stands. You will find that the overwhelming majority of the top 20 wealthiest Nigerians are entrepreneurs, not employees in the conventional sense. Only a relatively few have succeeded in building sustainable wealth as employees.

A 10am - 12pm job can make you wealthy without runs. I've seen consultants who barely work for 2 hrs a week earn 7 figure salaries in Nigeria.

Statistics don't show such in Nigeria my brother. A few incidence don't affirm a population. Almost a farce that nine to five prospers anyone. It is ever a salary. Sustainable maybe, but not enriching.

Only way out is to save as much as you can on your salary, start a business on the side and once the business is stable, resign.

Depends on where you work and the benefits. I know someone who works in a multinational. They change their official cars, staff buses, etc often. And this lady has won about 6 vehicles in her stay in that company. Imagine winning a bid or a coaster bus in good condition for 300k plus and selling it for 6m. She has won a hilux, etc.

And it's not only her. But she's the one I know. And her current salary is about 1m. Sometimes the company gives their staff cars for their service or they put them on auction.

When this kind of questions the op asked are asked, it seems people think of the 70k job or 40 or civil service. People don't know that there are big money jobs. I remember years back, my friend gave me a cheque, his tithe of 250k to pay for him cos he was travelling. I held it in shock.

It's not only people doing business that can be rich. Some salary earners can buy that business. The business people try to make doing business rosy; the best thing to happen to man. Big lie! There are struggles and down times there.
