The first 2 pictures were taken in 2005 and the second 2 pictures were taken in 2021. That roughly 15 years apart. The city is Aba in Abia State.

This same phenomena is happening in Onitsha, Awka, Owerri, Enugu, Abakaliki, Asaba, Umuahia, Nnewi etc

Actually I heard that Anambra state government banned residential developers from going above 5 stories. This has also limited growth in height of buildings in Onitsha.

But in this case, I side with the Anambra state government. Unless the developer has plans for reliable lift in the building and steady power supply.

Remember in 2010 when I first visited owerri ...I was like who builds state Secretariat in the middle of bush ...I was so angry then ...but today na centre of town be that ooh

I can even remember futo junction along port Harcourt road men it was forest in 2010 ...today owerri have passed that place

The rate at which igbos cities have been expanding is crazy especially since 2015 really ...

But do u know that ibadan with all its brown roofs still has more beautiful and nice buildings than all south east states.I will post pictures soon.

Another factor is the Boko Haram/Insurgency crisis up north. So many Igbo people has abandoned their investments and properties in the north and come to the East and it made them realize they need to stop building in another man’s land and start building at home as they became squatters when they came back.

Another factor is the renewed Biafran agitation... People are now careful lest what happened in 1970, when Igbo properties were seized by indigenes of the land and never returned, will repeat itself.

That’s why most Igbo people have stopped building in Lagos, Abuja and elsewhere and started building in the Southeast.

And that’s the reason Southeast cities like Enugu, Onitsha, etc, is now overcrowded.

I clearly remember when new Owerri area was opened around 2011 and I was wondering how many years it will take for the area to develop. I was very wrong. Within 5 years, the whole area transformed.

I am still hopeful with professor Barth Nnadi geometric power will finally function. Shell is building a gas pipeline to his plant. That will be a game changer for Aba.

A lot of people may not know this but Aku ruo uno mantra actually started when the 2011 post election riot happened in the north.

That was the red line for so many Igbo business men living in the north at that time.

A lot of them formed together and started buying land all over the east. Enugu was the first city to experience this boom then the rest followed.

They started building family houses to house their wives and children in the east. So that way their families are no more in harms way.

Majority of Nigeria’s gas supplies is pushed towards Lagos through the west African pipeline system. That’s why Lagos has more stable electricity because lots of private and PPP entities just build their own power generation and connect it to the gas network.

This makes it easier for Lagos to have high rise buildings

There is a gas masterplan for the south east on the table through SEREDEC but they are still working out the funding structure.
