This picture below, Courtesy of Abagworo, shows the rate of development in the south east. The first 2 pictures were taken in 2005 and the second 2 pictures were taken in 2021. That roughly 15 years apart. The city is Aba in Abia State. This same phenomena is happening in Onitsha, Awka, Owerri, Enugu, Abakaliki, Asaba, Umuahia, Nnewi etc Lalasticlala 2005 vs 2021 8 Likes

heniford2: Actually I heard that Anambra state government banned residential developers from going above 5 stories. This has also limited growth in height of buildings in Onitsha. But in this case, I side with the Anambra state government. Unless the developer has plans for reliable lift in the building and steady power supply. 14 Likes |

All thanks to the “Aku ruo uno” drive. Another factor is the Boko Haram/Insurgency crisis up north. So many Igbo people has abandoned their investments and properties in the north and come to the East and it made them realize they need to stop building in another man’s land and start building at home as they became squatters when they came back. Another factor is the renewed Biafran agitation... People are now careful lest what happened in 1970, when Igbo properties were seized by indigenes of the land and never returned, will repeat itself. That’s why most Igbo people have stopped building in Lagos, Abuja and elsewhere and started building in the Southeast. And that’s the reason Southeast cities like Enugu, Onitsha, etc, is now overcrowded. God bless the land of the rising sun! 23 Likes 1 Share |

mrvitalis: Exactly! I clearly remember when new Owerri area was opened around 2011 and I was wondering how many years it will take for the area to develop. I was very wrong. Within 5 years, the whole area transformed. 10 Likes |

heniford2:Power legislation means you will first channel all your generated power to the national grid, before they give you the portion they want to give you. Nigeria's problem is 25% structural, 25% religious and 25% Tribal and 25% illiteracy 11 Likes |
Re: Rapid Urbanization And Expansion Of SE Cities by horsepower102: 7:34pm On Jun 13, 2021 |
Penguin2: A lot of people may not know this but Aku ruo uno mantra actually started when the 2011 post election riot happened in the north. That was the red line for so many Igbo business men living in the north at that time. A lot of them formed together and started buying land all over the east. Enugu was the first city to experience this boom then the rest followed. They started building family houses to house their wives and children in the east. So that way their families are no more in harms way. 5 Likes |

heniford2: Majority of Nigeria’s gas supplies is pushed towards Lagos through the west African pipeline system. That’s why Lagos has more stable electricity because lots of private and PPP entities just build their own power generation and connect it to the gas network. This makes it easier for Lagos to have high rise buildings 2 Likes |

Malawian:That's if it's above 10mw ...what we need in the south east ( igbo land ) is a gas pipeline master plan Ohanaeze needs to get every igbo subgroup to declare they are igbos or not ...let's know the map of igbo land first Once that's done we map out our gas master plan ...in such a way that ... neighborhoods can come together and build 1mw to 10 me and power their homes n business Companies can build power plants and power their industries then our quota of national grid is sent to the vilages 12 Likes |
