Not true!
These parties and occasions provide jobs for people. We need to keep spending in an economy to grow the economy.
Hoarding money or constantly investing in long term projects diminish the economy and make it less vibrant.

The only problem in Nigeria is, most of what we use like caskets, flowers, wreaths etc are imported.

I have been to such burials & it's quite repulsive to me. Infact, it's a culture of waste. How do people party & merry over the death of an individual - whether old or young? From my observation thus far on burials in SE, I see it as a show-off & competition among social classes in SE.

I hope the deceased makes it to HEAVEN sha!

It will be double tragedy to be celebrated here while he or she is languishing in hell.

Wrong MINDSET!

We value the dead much more than the living.

We must CHANGE. Let's show people love while they are alive to feel and appreciate it.

If you like spend billions, the memory of a good or bad wedding/burial lasts only a week and life moves on.

Abi oh. Truly where is the poverty? Aside this burial ceremony of a thing, the way and manner beer parlours, bars and restaurants are packed up these days make one wonder who and who is poor?

Is it not this same country they say the average Nigerian survive on less than a dollar a day? Yet you see this same average Nigerians with side chicks, that collects money from their male friends etc.

I spent alot in my dad funeral May his fin soul rest in peace.

Now when am praying to my ancestors I proudly call his name knowing he is occupying a prominent place among them.

And guess what each time I raise up a kola to call them.they answer me with speed of light.

My cup of tea is this: make sure you take good care of your parents while they are still alive.

Not neglecting your parents and later spend millions for their burial just to show off and impress people.
Re: Funerals Have Taken A New Dimension In The East by MrCliff(m): 8:14am On Jun 23, 2021
Nonsense at de highest level by my people. They won't celebrate u care about u while u live. No body send u even at point of death but once one drop dead, they will start their madness of celebrating de dead.
One aspect I luv about de north/islam 'bury de dead within few days and let living move on.
Re: Funerals Have Taken A New Dimension In The East by Edusouls(m): 8:17am On Jun 23, 2021
It’s way too extravagant and lavish, death is now like a grand celebration specially in anambra culture, you celebrate the living and mourn the dead, but in anambra it’s a different case they celebrate the dead and mourn the living..one reason death thrives there so much and loves reaping them..
SimplyShit:
So is this write up meant to praise and emulate the south east (Anambra in particular) way of burying their loved ones or meant to criticize them?

Tell me o cos I don't understand

Form your opinion by yourself. The write-up was meant to educate not to orientate.

This is one thing I dislike about the Igbo culture, I have seen people in their lifetime begging for food to eat and other basic necessary needs of life to survive. Once they are dead, come and see elaborate funeral party.

These are not done most of the time because they love the deceased family member, but to show the community that they have arrived. (The Igbo man Way of telling the next person. I AM BETTER THAN YOU.)
This is a vice and not a virtue. most importantly, this has to stop.
You guys have a warped understanding of how these things work. If none of you have buried a parent, I don’t think y’all have any moral standing contributing on this topic.
Yes, you have lost a loved one but should that now make it look like all hope is lost? So, people that travelled long distances to come pay their last respects should go back home on empty stomach? Like someone said, it’s an age long tradition and not a borrowed culture. Igbo people value life and the life that the deceased must have lived that’s why he’s being honored.
My dad’s burial was bigger than a carnival and we are happy we honored him that way because he lived a good life. Nothing is as repulsive to me as watching the videos of a burial ceremony and the only thing you can take away from it is gloomy faces and dull gathering.
That’s a sad way to bid a loved one farewell.

It's a showoff and competition among social classes in every culture that practices it.

Anambra mentality, you people are very funny people that think you can buy Peace for a departed soul with money or send him to heaven with lavish burial..the soul of ur dad is judged on the other side according to his life and not ur burial spending, this anambra people una too dey backwards in reasoning..

People don't party and merry at the funeral of a young person..

That is only reserved for the death of the aged..

Get your facts right.. angry

Rubbish!!

The dead has no SOUL..

And HEAVEN is a figment of delusion..

And don't let poverty warp your mind..

When you make money..

It is your prerogative to spend it as you please..

Anambra is not the cause of poverty in your state..

If you have money do the burial of your father, mother, grandma and grandpa in big way.Na something you do once in life time,Na you go bury your papa and mama no be them.
Afterall the money you go spend still enter in pockets of Umu Igbo who may even be your relatives.which is helping the ministry move to permanent sitegrin grin

We are Igbos and we value life, the very reason we don't kill at will.

Abi you wan bury a man/woman that have sons
and daughters that are doctor, lawyer, lecturer, etc,Like you are burying a Chicken.

But if you no too get money(because every Igbo man have money) just do it as your strength reach.

did u say u don't kill at will?pls think very well again.

Igbo people just like showing off unnecessarily. Not only in funerals. Attend wedding and see how they throw money around as though it's worthless.

There is nothing like show off. it has been there for ages.

Bury ur loved ones in honour
I see. By showing everybody your money AT the funeral?
What about during his life? Did you spend money on him them? His rent, his food, his bills?
No?
Culture of show offs.

Guy, there are many types of creatures/animals on this earth.
We are the human being type.
You can read and write and you know yourself.
No other creature can do this.
This knowledge of yourself is your soul.
Continue deceiving yourself.
Your soul will never you.
You will always be aware of yourself, in this life and in the next.
