One person was alleged to have died, while some vehicles were vandalised as traffic robbers attacked motorists on the Long Bridge, Ogun State end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday.

PUNCH Metro gathered from some of the victims that the attacks occurred between 9pm and 10pm when the flow of traffic became slow on the bridge.

A victim, Mrs Adeola Akinwunmi, told our correspondent that she had yet to get over the shock of the incident, adding that she took her child from the car and fled with her husband when they saw other victims running towards her car.

Adeola, who works as a journalist for a Lagos-based media outfit, said she and other victims returned to their vehicles when the gunshots subsided, adding that vehicles that were locked were broken into by the hoodlums and the belongings of the owners and occupants were stolen.

Adeola stated that her bag containing vital documents was stolen as well as her husband’s laptop.

She told PUNCH Metro that those, who remained in their vehicles during the attack, were injured, adding that as of the time she reported the incident at the Warewa Police Station, no other victim had come forward.

Adeola stated, “It happened around 9.30pm. There was traffic on the bridge. We saw people alighting from their vehicles and running towards us. I was with my husband. He told me to unhook my seat belt and be on the alert. We alighted from our car, left it unlocked and joined the fleeing crowd. My phone was with me as we fled. We continued to hear gunshots. People, who stayed in their vehicles, were injured. We stopped when we could no longer hear gunshots and began to walk towards our cars.

“We noticed that the windscreens and windows of some cars that were locked had been shattered and the belongings of the occupants stolen. When we got to our car, my handbag with all my documents, ATM cards and ID card had been stolen as well as my husband’s laptop.

“The driver of a Hilux vehicle that was conveying an Indian man was stabbed in the head with the Indian man gasping for breath. He eventually died this morning. My husband and I drove to the Warewa Police Station to report the incident and all the things stolen from our car.”

She said many vehicles were destroyed during the raid, adding that the perpetrators jumped down from the bridge after the operation.

Crazy times.

I was in the food market recently and if you have been there too, you would see the many families that now struggle to eat a meal daily.

Actually, it is beginning to be so with the Nigeria average family- these Buhari days, eating more than ones is a luxury only the wealthy can afford. Even the staple garri.

So these boys on the bridge are victims, they left home, in search of jobs to support their families- but there are no jobs. Even those with postgraduate degrees are applying to be assistants and drivers and still are unemployed...

but then these boys I have earlier called victims soon graduate from being victims to becoming notorious terror themselves; creating too for many, worse situations than that which produced them.

They are available for the sustaining of the politicians that put them in those situations; it is some of them, attacking those who demanded more equity from the government, it is some of them, hijacking it, it is these boys that will be used to kill or maim their messiahs.

So initially, the boys in order to survive take on crimes... but sadly, rather than rob those who made them impoverished (the politicians and their sponsors), they rob those like their fathers, struggling to put a meal on the table for their families, they maim them.

The driver that is maimed or ‘robbed’ loses his job. His own young son has to drop out of school and join the road too. Luckily, he is lynched in his first attempt by the experienced robbers, who now find their vocation becoming congested.

It goes on and on... till there are many robbers than their are to be robbed... while the policeman in order to afford a living rent out his gun for the night to the boys.

Lagos politicians are the one giving them upper hand, they use them to rig elections and use them to do their shenanigans during election campaigns.

Until Lagos start killing them immediately once they have been arrested, they won't stop rubbing innocent citizens on the highway...

This happens frequently in Lagos too, many locations in Lagos today are notorious for such crimes ,people have been complaining but they refused to do anything. If only our Government responds to necessary things in the country as fast as they mobilize police and security forces to Stop a Protest and how fast they acted on TwitterBan, the country would be a better place.

U will not see useless Nigeria Police force stationed there (due to the frequency of the crimes). It is to look for a lungu where they can mount road block and be extorting motorists

Long bridge is now a danger zone. My people,I would advice once it's 5pm and you are trying to reach IBADAN or abeokuta on time, you should find your way to the train station. But if you a living around mowe, ibafo and it's environ,I would suggest you take bike. If you're traveling far away to the Eastern or Northern side,I would suggest you travel during the day.

May God protect us all as we don't have government anymore.

I lived in that axis. Long bridge has always been known for criminality and you will never see police patrolling every night. You will not see government putting street light and camera. No preventive measures. People living at the mercy of criminals. Government dont care. Police probably colluded.

What is the way forward?

1. Police mobile force anti- robbery units need to be revitalized and have their emergency numbers given to drivers and general public , district by district. Also is the Amotekun force. 2. State government should support these units and package them with health and life insurance, patrol vehicles and logistics.
3. The most important of all is that government should create an enabling environment for businesses, monthly stimulus package for d unemployed Nationwide, give loans to starters, regular recruitment into public works, create many empowerment programs put them under the office of the VP.
4.(cut excesses like the Nigeria Senate, limit representatives from each state to 3, remove Minister's of states ,scrap redundant boards, check the excesses of most top federal civil servants who are stealing the nation's funds.)
5. Open boarders at least for now to check the current inflation of goods cos Nigeria cannot feed itself.
6. Restructure the judiciary cos they have become a very corrupt entity.from the courts to judges to police to armed forces.
7. Empower the EFCC chairman and make him answerable to only the president, corruption cases should be concluded within 6months without appeal. Secret investigation of government appointees, civil servants and top government officials. Investigate the University system from VCs to ASUU to NUC
8. The Governors forum should be abolished and the president should be given the power to withhold allocation of states that are not paying her workers monthly.

9. Revive NOA and SERVICOM and let's have a good country again.

With the height of insecurity in Nigeria today, our roads and highways aren't safe anymore for night journey. Please try to avoid staying out late. It is only the living that can complain about insecurity and bad government oo. Please let's stay safe. Employers of Labour here should please consider the safety of their staff, adjust your work time if it will make your workers be on the road at odd hours or provide accommodation for them. All lives matters.

Something urgent has to be done to improve security situation in Lagos and ogun states. I was also a victim of similar incidence in agege under the bridge a week ago. Although Nigeria economy is not smiling but the manner of robbery in Lagos environment is becoming worrisome.
