Yes repainting a car in Nigeria devalues the car and I have my reasons.

Paint jobs carried out in Nigeria are trash, even the so called oven baking. It will cost thousands of dollar to get a car painted to factory specs. Who in Nigeria is willing to pay that much just to respray a car? I had a slight accident with my car last march, i fixed it and decided to oven bake it with the sane color it came with. After 8 months there were scratches everywhere. Even dust dey cause the car to scratch. It is no way near the paint job that came with the car. OEM paint job can last as long as 15 years whearas Nigerian oven baking will barely last 1 year. U can't blame them though, u get what u pay for.

You are absolutely correct!!! There is not one paint shop that will do a proper paint job! The whole oven bake is a scam! I paid over 500k for a paint job at ATS in Abuja, it didn’t last more than 1 year, scratches everywhere!! A proper factory paid job would involve stripping the entire car; door handles, lamps... some would argue you should even have the panels removed and painted individually. Then most important is the clear coat. I think this is where the painters get it wrong. Some don’t even use this which should ideally form a protective layer on the the paint.

Why is nobody suggesting that a repainted car could be seen as a potentially stolen car to buyers...

Wetin I know sef, it's not like I have one.

Very true Siena. I painted my landrover and frankly,I wasn't impressed and knew it was a poor job even before I picked up the car. I have been looking around for a company that will do a better job.
A friend of mine found an elderly gentleman who has a paint booth with all the right equipment. My friends 2002 Toyota corola was painted with N120k and it was done to factory quality.
What I noticed is that the paint is one of the issues as most of them use some cheap generic paint for.all brands and all auto body whether made from steel, aluminum or fiber. Also most Nigerians want cheap things. If done right, a paint job should not devalue the car

I had a similar experience. I was scared of repainting my car because of the after effects I have seen from repainted cars. However, on the recommendation of another person who had his car repainted I patronised someone who did the job for me three years ago. It is still as good as when I bought it except for scratches due to other vehicles and the like.

Meanwhile, I painted the minivan for N70k up North. A couple of my friends have done similar paint jobs elsewhere and right of the bat you know something is wrong. Some few months after painting and it is obvious that cheap paint was used. I have seen a minivan put up for sale and from a mile away I knew it was recently painted and I was put off.

When people who don't know you and can tell that your car has recently been painted, alarm bells go off. This is usually known when the is dull or shining more than normal.

it depends on the quality of the job. there are only a handful of experts in Nigeria.

This is exactly what i have been expecting to read. When you use road-side spray painters who take your car to oven bakes they pay to use, what more could you expect? Use the services of Kojo Motors and thank me later.

Yes someone can decide to change the color of his car, but can u spend over $2,000 to give ur car a paint job? Unless u can do that, then it will never be like first body.

Why using the word Dollar instead of Naira?

Na abroad dem won go paint d car abi our home based naija painter dey collect Dollar?

Oh....how did I forget.

Using detergents like Omo and Klin which is a common practice in Nigeria etches most paint jobs faster.

This is one of the main reasons for destroyed paint jobs in Nigeria.

We are fist bundled with inferior and low quality paints, obviously imported from China, then we speed up the process with cloth detergent.

I have learnt to use genuine car washing soaps or ordinary water. A car is not a plate and ordinary water can remove most stains.
That was how the house help of a fellow destroyed the paint of his using klin. I was aghast when I saw the grain of the the detergent all over the car. That was the beginning of the end for the car.

Most Nigerians are not even willing to buy fuel in their car let alone spend money for quality paint job. Na so cheap and manage things we like. That's why toyota full everywhere like pure water. Na 500 naira or 1000 fuel them go dey buy like say na napep dem dey drive. How them wan spend money for quality paint job.

I have noticed that some fellas turn their backs on a car they have shown interest to purchase the moment they hear that it has been repainted. Why is this so? Asides from the fear that the car in question may have been involved in an accident and had to be fixed and repainted, can't a car owner simply decide to re-spray his car (either maintaining the same colour or changing it) even when it is accident free?

What is your view?

I recently saw someone with his Bimmer 3 series and instantly i fell in love with it simply because of the colour - white. I am even looking at changing the colour of my E39 to white sometime soon...
So u drive an e39 tooo?

When nairaland was nairaland, intelligent posts from the first page by experienced users.

Back to topic.

Probable reason people fear paint job is because they feel the paint is hiding in serious flaw eg, welded joints that might compromise the safety of the car.

If the previous owner is honest, it can allay most of fears

Waoh!! interesting topic.

If i hadn't been there i would have been confused a lot more. But thank God i have 2 experiences, I bought my w202 c class Nigerian use , the painting work was scratched so i decided and gave it a neat spraying job but not a very expensive type like the amount mentioned here. I spotted a dude who does it well over here and he did it for me . This is the 3rd year and i bet you it will still remain like that for the next 10 years, my car is only looking finer by the day. Out of gratitude, i introduce 4 more guys to him a jaguar guy amongst them who inherited from his Dad, the guy did his and the jaquar turns new and he was able to sell at a very good price and went for a car he could maintain.

Out of the four of us, my car still stands out as the best amongst them. People keep on asking me if i respray it every now and then. So the other 3 guys came to me for advice and i put them through , now they are very happy with their cars still looking good except one of them who had already mess his with all sort of lines and scratches here and there, an honda EOD, and i kept on wondering how he did such a mess.

The bottom line is, some guys knows their onions , they may not even be expensive like this dude, but make sure you delibrately allow them room to make some profit for themselves , a craft man deserve this. Don't drag price with an honest painter.

There are ways to maintain your car paint, don't use dry dusty/sandy rag to mess the paint work (the clear coat) . Is either you wash it with a soft clothe(microfiber clothe) or you leave it untill you have time to do so with plenty of water . Use mild liquid soap, preferably car wash but not detergent nor toilet/key soap except for the tyres.

Always mop up the water from the clear coat with a clean wet microfiber clothe to dry after rinsing out the surd, and preferably with an hydrate spayed on the microfiber clothe if you have one , it help protect the paint and maintains the clear coat from harsh conditions and extreme sunlight.

Once in a while(every 6 month) you could wax it to bring out the painting. Never wake up in the morning and just decide to use any rag to rub off the morning dew in the name of cleaning the car. Nothing kills and scratches paint work than this kind of habit. Leave it if you don't have the time to wash, then wash it later.

Nice response. Please, how can I get to meet your painter...?

I don't believe your statement,a good car paint job is first determined by the smoothness of the body work and the quality of the paint, that's why if I want to do a car paint job I buy paint from sikkens, ppg , akzo Nobel,if you use original car paint sprayed by an experienced painter on a smooth body work you will get a very close to factory specs that will last far more than that 1 year,if you give car painters money for everything they will buy China paint and turkey or Ghana varnish and slow thinner, they will never go to sikkens or akzo Nobel office to buy ₦70-80k paint that will cover a car like Toyota Camry, note that ₦30-35k China paint will cover same car but will scratch at smallest contact, ifou want to do a neat car paint job buy paint yourself and pay for an experienced car painter to spray it around ₦5k,most of panel beaters are not car painters, there are some guys that have spray booth and spraying cars only are there job.

I noticed that most painters here don't buff the vehicles after painting, then the vehicle owners don't use proper carwash detergents in washing the vehicles.

It all depends on the quality of paint used in repainting and how honest the painter is. I have a friend that repainted his 07 corolla here in Enugu last 2 years and it's still glowing. Asked him what's up,and told he me he bought a high quality paint and that even the painter confided in him that if not for their relationship,he would have resold the paint and buy a less quality one and make more profit. So most of these painters know exactly the quality of materials to use but greed will never allow them.

Contrary to popular belief, you can change the colour of your car in Nigeria, without devaluing it.

I have no idea why the majority believe there are no skilled craftsmen in Nigeria. There are loads. The issues are the average Nigerian would rather spend peanuts, and moan when the paint job turns out bad.

I know of quite a few Nigerians in Nigeria who have had good colour changes, that have been factory standard. My parents had awesome colour changes on their cars back in the 1980's, and that was back when bodyshop skills were not as they are today.

Do you know any in Lagos? Direct me please

Oga please don't mislead young Chemistry students.
H2O +O2 is not equal to H2SO4 PLEASE. That is an acid!

By the way, I agree with you that a well formulated car wash soap is necessary for a brilliant, shining paint. You don't wash a very dirty car with ordinary water. No matter the amount of water. The maps will show up when it is dry.
what people don't understand is the fact that there are 2 major type of paint Nigeria painters use number one is called AUTO BASE another one is AUTO CREAR then auto base is the original and it is very expensive because of its quality but auto crear is cheaper and in most cases when you are negotiating with a painters they wouldn't tell you they will go ahead and apply the one your money that you bargained can afford sometimes even if you pay for auto base then some of them will go ahead and apply the cheap one knowing that you can't differentiate between them but if you can differentiate btw the cheap and the quality paint you will be on a safer side

Yes. You don't fix car bodies that are not broken. Here, the phrase ' first body' puts the seller in the driving wheel during negotiation.

Thank you - sometimes people wonder why I refused to spray my car, only patch up spots where Keke drivers brush - I was once offered N1m for my car bcoz it a first body! I bought another one of recent, that was sprayed and the quality is far more cheaper then what they offered for mine simply bcoz of the spray work cool

You made a lot of valid points but messed it all up with your chemical equation. How does water react with oxygen to give sulphuric acid? Oxidation has nothing to do with sulphuric acid so refresh your chemistry and correct yourself sharp sharp grin...but what do I know.
Mind u, sulphuric acid is a dangerous oxidant itself despite his corrosive nature. Introducing the atmospheric oxygen will only only increase the oxidizing power. Clean water with mild detergent is the best.

Hmmm..... the topic is not about quality of repainting job.... it's about if repainting devaluation of the car. There is no yes or no answer to this since it depends on the buyer. Soooo many value a car based on looks ..... these will choose an repainted car ... not concerned if the owner repainted to cover minor scratches or to cover major body repairs. Others will be concerned about the reason for repainting and if not fully convinced will immediately reduce the amount he was prepaid to pay due to risk factor. If the buyer got burnt before.... he most likely will not buy.

@Siena - kindly refer or share painters in Nigeria that can get my car back to near factory finish.
if you want a very good car paint finish negotiate with the panel beater for smoothing and sanding only go and buy paint yourself,if you give a worker #200k he will go and still buy #40k China and Ghana paint product,I painted my Honda last 2 months the panel beater charged #35k and I bought paint and accessories for #76k at ppg,and the day he will spray I brought the paint and paid #5k to use an oven booth for 2 hrs,I was there until he finished painting I can't trust those guys they are mischievous,China paint will scratch if you just wash it with rag ,and fade in months.
