UNILAG On Chidinma Ojukwu: Why We Can’t Take Action Yet On Our Student by Islie: 11:07am On Jun 26, 2021
THE University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has said that it is yet to take any decision against Chidinma Adaora Ojukwu, a 300-level Mass Communication student who, on Thursday, publicly recounted how she stabbed her lover, Super TV CEO, Mr Usifo Ataga, to death some days earlier in the Lekki area of Lagos.

Chidinma, 21, narrated the incident to newsmen while she was being paraded for the crime by the Lagos State police command at its headquarters in Ikeja.

Speaking to Saturday Tribune on Friday on the matter, UNILAG’s Deputy ViceChancellor (Academics and Research), Professor Oluwole Familoni, said although the university received the news with shock, it could not take any instant decision against the student.

Professor Familoni said this was because the university was yet to receive any official report from the appropriate quarters, especially the police, on the allegation levelled against the student.

He said Chidinma committed the alleged crime far away from the university campus and therefore her action was personal and had nothing to do with UNILAG.

According to him, even though the university is not claiming that all its students are saints, it doesn’t teach its students how to murder people or do wrong things.

“So, to us in UNILAG, it is very unfortunate that the girl is not a good ambassador of our university. But then, we can’t disown her because of her alleged action which the school totally condemns,” he said.

He insisted that what Chidinma had done, “as of today” (Friday), was still on the pages of newspapers and other media platforms and the university could not act based on that.

“So, if the university will do anything on the matter, particularly now, it will require official communication from appropriate authorities, particularly the police, to the university,” he stressed.

Professor Familoni pointed out that even at that, one thing is clear and that is, once a student is in police or correctional custody, such a student cannot at the same time be in school let alone register for courses, nor attend lectures nor do any examination.

“So, if they write us that our student has committed a criminal offence of any type, definitely, the law will take its course and that invariably means she will not be able to qualify to remain as our student.

“But as I have said, that could only be when the matter is officially communicated to us,”
Professor Familoni emphasised.

UNILAG won't denie her if she had won laurels outside the school vicinity, they won't wait for police report before honouring her....but the girl is in deep shit especially killing a wealthy family man except the family is not interested in the case, the state can even prosecute her.

Naturally the school will deny her soon... They just need the police to conclude their investigation. Once she plead guilty at court they will disown her.

Such a shame.... A cheap shame for that matter. Sincerely she is a lucky bitch.... Self defense will be used at the court.... She'll get a minimum sentence. Come out and continue her life.

I'm saying this base on the picture of the dead body released. Multitude stab wounds even on the leg of the corpse might go well for self defense after all the deseased was an amateur boxer that posed as a threat to her.

Using the fact that she was also acting on drugs will reduce her sentence. Her lawyer might plead for a lunatic immunity.

Such a waste

The self-defence agenda being pushed by some is complete bollocks.

Self-defence against what?? It's not like the guy was trying to kill her or hurt her physically as there were no bruises on the Girl. Let's even assume that it's true that the guy was trying to have sex with her when she wasn't in the mood. Is the next logical step for an innocent girl to get a knife to stab him to death when you know that having sex with him was the basis of your relationship with him?

Let me rephrase for dingbats pushing the self-defence narrative: As the Aristo that she does for a living, she was fully aware that the reason he rented a short-let apartment for her was for him to be screwing her at will and in return she gets the cash as agreed. Her Big god then wants to have round 2 sex with her after he has taken plenty drugs which she ordered for him, yet somehow she thought her life was under threat and she stabs him multiple times to death. Yet, there were no physical marks on her body to prove that he tried to hurt her for someone way bigger and stronger than her. How convenient that she recorded a flawless victory! Does this make sense at all?

- It makes no sense that she thought killing the guy was a commensurate action to him wanting to have sex with her when that's what you do for a living
- It makes no sense that she didn't have any marks on her body for such a David and Goliath fight when the hunky guy was trying to hurt her as claimed
- It makes no sense that she easily gained possession of a knife which was supposed to be in the kitchen when he was trying to sleep with her
- It makes no sense that the first step she took after killing him was to steal his money when she should have been hit by remorse and so disoriented by the accidental murder to be that much coordinated afterwards.

Unilag must be commended for refusing to be politically correct because Chidinma is innocent until proven guilty.

She's the victim here.
A naive young girl, tricked, bullied, drugged and sexually exploited by a man old enough to be her father.

Considering she was under the influence of drugs when the murder took place, it becomes a case of involuntary manslaughter bordering on self-defense amidst a moment of temporary insanity.

Student stabs a man to death, University says shes still our daughter though we condemn her actions. Is this what human life is worth now? So little value, as if she stole an iPhone. Ah i wonder what human life will be worth in the next 20years

Unilag is being careful and matured, I might add. They can't just act impulsively on news from social media. She is Innocent until proven guilty.

Even though the girl confessed to Stabbing him, it might not be a case of premeditated murder. It might have been in self-defence.

What can they do than to formally expel her?

What's she's into sef is more than expulsion.
Someone that'll be thinking of how to get off the hook. Worse still, the case is given much media hype.

She will be expelled for campus prostitution. No doubt it's against the school rules. This are the kind of girls who seduce lecturers and innocently frame them up using phoney BBC reporters.
Look at the way she looks innocent, whereas she is a deadly campus queen.

Lol

Which action they wan take before ?

Growing up, I never knew UNILAG was actually an academic institution.

Till today, I am still amazed to think that UNILAG has an engineering faculty...whenever that school name comes up, ashewo just flash my subliminal undecided

mrfreestuff:
You didn't grow up amongst academically strong company. UNILAG has the best Engineering school and that remains the only Engineering school that will never accept you without 6 credits which must include minimum of credit in Further Maths. I particularly know that the dream of every academically strong student, especially those who grew up in Lagos, is to work very hard to secure admission placement in Engineering.
Every UNILAG student gets admission with a result above the minimum requirements of all Nigerian schools and most people hating on UNILAG don't even merit the admission or the pride of the University of Lagos, university of first choice. Chidinma will have her day in court. Please let the court decide.University of Lagos is not a village school that responds to social media gossips .

As you must have noticed, most Akokites are not here on Nairaland or engaging in the idleness of debating this issue on the social media outside their platforms . They will feel let down and handle it with grace.

University of Lagos is a first generation university with the experience to handle issues like this and that DVC is an Akokite too. We will not disown her yet #proudlyakokite

Save the drama son.
Not everyone grew up around Akoka. Not even Africa!
By the way, all the peeps in your attachment below have no international recognition nor global effect in the positive direction.
No contribution to the betterment of mankind at a global level
they are all just local political brew that led Nigeria into the state of Zooism
changing political attires in the name of APC and PDP

spits on your posters and products!
MadeInUnilag my foot!
Murderers!

Killing dreams since 1962...

First Generation School indeed.
UNILAG, the bedrock of Africa Prostitution !!!
Always in the news for SEX never-ending well

damosky12:

You probably didn't grow in an enlightened environment. UNILAG is one of the pioneer Academic institutions in Nigeria, founded in 1962. Currently one of the most popular universities among undergraduates, with 1/8 of university aspirants in Nigeria applying for admission there.

My environment literally prevented me from the dark.
I would never have seen or heard about UNILAG as it was deep-rooted in the dark where no positivity comes out from as their products were only semi-guided Allen avenue girls...

I like the way the school management responded to this issue. They never denied or condemned the girl since the court of law hasn't find her guilty of the crime.

It is just a sad incident that will never be erased from her generations to come! I pity the both parties involved on this issue I.e the man and the girl.

Married men... let us be guided about these young ladies that doesn't care about their immediate actions.

Sticks to your wife!

My penny advice...
