U can upgrade, since ur car doesn't have engine or transmission issue.
Visit gazzuzz.
He will do a comprehensive one for u

ThierryJay:
Hello guys, you are doing a great job on this thread!

I'm a newbie here and will really appreciate your advice concerning my e-hailing plans based on your wealth of experiences:

I have about 1.5 - 1.7million budget to get a car for bolt/uber and I'm faced with 2 options:

1. Buy a Tokunbo car: The pro is that it will give less issues for a while. The drawback is the long time of delivery due to importation process and of course the higher price.

2. Buy Naija used: Major risk here is that one may inherit several hidden legacy issues with the car. But I believe this can be mitigated with proper due diligence and by targeting first grade Naija used vehicles. The advantages here are that you get the car almost immediately and lower costs compared to Tokunbo.

Major question here is which option do I go for based on my budget and plans to avoid huge spends on repairs and maintenance? Also what model of vehicle is most suitable for e-hailing within the specified budget?

N.B: There is a third option. I have an Hyundai Elantra 2009 that is not so much in optimal condition (AC & radio not working, bad shocks and engine plugs, faulty car doors and worn out seats). I intend to sell the Hyundai and add money to make up the 1.5-1.7m budget. However, is it wise to totally upgrade the Elantra and use for ehailing instead of buying another car considering the upsurge in vehicle prices in Naija today?

Thanks as your responses flow in.

Felicity0001:

My bros 95% of drivers in Nigeria don't know how to drive.

Last week in my way home I was on the fast lane along the old abeakuta exp way after scheme 1 and I sighted a car coming out of that suco road beside abattoir I was horning for this man from the distance hoping he will do the right driving by maintaining the service lane since he's coming in from a branch or wait for me to speed pass but this stupid man wanted to form smart and entered into the speed lane, this was at night so the road was free and I was doing 60/80kmh... I'd to move to the right lane overtook him and then pulled over in his front blocking him... Opened my door and was coming out with my weapon (screw driver) in my hands... I was shouting at him already "is that how to drive? Are you mad??" Omo the man immediately started begging "sorry sorry sorry please"... Traffic don long immediately and other road users where insulting him as well.... I just went back into my car and drove off.

Most drivers don't have common sense at all.

na so I scratched one internationally last yr at mangoro b/s he was just changing lanes anyhow like he's driving F1... Me I dey my lane b4 you enter my front you first have to seek permission by traffigating then I can slow down to allow you if I can but if I know I can't slow down for you to enter maybe due to my speed and you stubbornly enter anything that happens you will supper for it. because b4 you negotiate another lane you must have at least 100m.

But many Lagos drivers believe so long they're the one in front and you hit them they are not wrong. That was exactly the rule that military man was trying to exercise the other time I had an issue at Oba Akran street but unfortunately for him there was no contact...

So drivers should always apply common sense while driving.

You're turning left while be in the right lane then wait to turn left just when you'd gotten to your turning point... Its totally wrong.

If the Lagos State traffic officers want to do their job enh a lot of we drivers I inclusive will be find wanting seriously.
I hope you keep scratching them intentionally, now that you drive your own car.

So let's set the record straight.

Uncle we@dru23,
BAZ001 have accepted your challenge but he want you to restate it again. All we need you to do now is to be precise with the informations you need from him to ascertain his claim.

Like...
1) The year he bought the car, and millage threshold that show whether his own millage is low or high. Eg, 150k miles. So anything above >150k should be termed high, while below <150k should be termed low millage.

2) what and what to present to convince us that the informations he presented where not dubbed from the internet or manipulated.

Thanks.

Dru23 please come and explain.
She said you have bank, but not a bank account.
It could be piggy vest or kolokolo.

She also said you hustle like a broke dude; and you know, in every rumor, there's an atom of truth.

As for driving ability. You need not say about that again, cos you and thevisit have long proven your inability to drive to us.

Lol. Is part of this business bro, any real hustler on this Ehailing job must have been to aleast 3 different police stations,

Me since I stated this work in 2015, I have been to 7 different police stations in Lagos on different offence commited knowingly and unknowingly.

1 . Ogudu police station : Driving without tinted permit in 2015. I paid fine ₦5000

2. Maroko Police station: Driving one-way at midnight due to bad road. I bailed my car for ₦10,000 with serious begging and pleading. I slept in police station to collect my car the following day. That's was 2016

3. IGando police station: I picked up G boys from ikeja going to Lasu gate, police stop us at IGando bustop, they search phones of those boys and found white women pictures and some tools they use in collecting money from client. I tried to explain to them I drive Uber, they refused to listen, Na so dem carry us go police station. Getting to the station, they compelled us to write statement. Luckily for me, one of the boys called his uncle who happened to be the Commissioner of police Lagos state. He demanded they release us with immediate effect. They freed us immediately without wasting time. That was in 2017.

4. Maroko Police Station again. grin : I picked up a Nigerian Artist based in UK in Lekki phase 1 close to Don jazzy's Mavin studio. The dude was going to Palms ShopRite Oniru. On getting to his destination he alighted and paid me. After 10mins of driving off from ShopRite, I got a call from him that his wallet is missing. I searched the nooks and crannies of the car I didn't find any wallet. I called to tell him I didn't see his wallet, I had to drive back to Palms to clarify myself. Getting there, we both searched the car again. We didn't see the wallet. He insisted we go to the station. We got there and entered there was no officer to attend to us. We drove back to his pick up location, he searched his house and found his wallet on the dinning table. 2018

5. Somolu Police Station: Google Map took me through one way, as I was about to exit the one way Some police men hiding for one corner jump out from no where stop me, collected the car keys, impounded my car and took my particulars and my car keys. They were threating that my car will be Auctioned for taking one way. I had to beg and beg. We sha settled at ₦8,000. This was 2019

6. Ikorodu Police Station: I took BRT lane, because I wasn't familiar with Ikorodu road network. And there was serious traffic. Task force stopped me at Majidun and ceased the car. This was the biggest fine I have ever paid. ₦35,000. Initial they were demanding for ₦90,000. That was 2019

7. Ikeja police station: This happened recently. I was coming from festac that faithful night after dropping off rider. I decided blow to empty back home, it was pass 12 and I didn't know lockdown was still on. Naso I jam police for ikeja underbridge. They stopped alot of cars and took us to the police station. They were claiming we violated Covid19 rules and they would lock us up in a cell. grin, But deep down in my mind I knew they were trying to shalo us. At d end everybody Paid ₦3000 to bail himself grin

Police matter and Ehailing business are like 5 & 6, is something one will encounter, but the most important thing is to always learn from every mistake or offence commited so it doesn't repeat again. Because sometimes the subsequent mistake or offence might cost you alot than the previous ones.

I am patiently waiting for the Gist grin

What!

With all these police stations that you have either visited or branched, its not too bad if you are made an honorary ASP.

Some ASP's sef no waka go different police stations reach you.

If Engine and transmission is great, revamp the third option, then go for the first option too. By so doing, you have 2 cars, drive one yourself and give one out on rental.

Very smart one. Many thanks.

If I may ask further, what is like the best reliable tokunbo car (Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Peugeot etc) one can get with a 1.8m budget and what is the best Naija used vehicle that can be gotten for 1.7million?

3) if he wants to examine the car physically to scan and be sure the mileage has never been rolled back. He should mention a workshop in Lagos.

4.) 50k cash or 100$ ( not 10k and 2 engine oils )

none but for naija used, toyota corolla/honda civic and with this figure, you should aim at few months/year used.
