Uniben by a mile!

No be only UNIBEN. That school! Check COREN website for accreditation of engineering courses and you would see that three engineering courses have been stepped down in UNIBEN. That school doesnt look serious to me. Who knows, when you enter there for engineering after 2 years your course who be stepped down.

OAU Faculty of Tech: Is it the best? I can't say. But probably the most competitive in the country. You meet and compete with extremely brilliant students and it brings out the best in you.

UNILAG remains the BEST, 1st Department of Electrical and Electronic Enngineering in Nigeria University system, 1st in Computer Engineering, Petroleum and Gas Engineering etc, Unilag remains Nigeria's University of 1st choice, the difference is, they admit only good students and that makes the lecturing easier as you are expected to always be on point as a student, As a Unilag student, if someone from yankee or europe says a thing, you just look at him with SWAG and tell him/her the origin and history,,,because? why?you are simply updated, For the past years, unilag students projects have been winning international awards and are all placed on commercials, Guy, just get updated, try unilag, it gives you educational swags, read with swag becos u know what you are doing, If any uni says they are gud in ds areas, dia premium lecturers either finish from unilag or oversea,

I studied Chemical Engr in Uniben and as at the time was one of the best in Nigeria. The two courses you are talking about might be Computer Engr and Structural Engr, just maybe. Honestly, UNIBEN is one of the best for Engr courses.

How do you measure the best? In Nigeria, the only authentic bodies (no matter what anybody says) that can state the best (1st, 2nd or 3rd and the rest) is COREN and NUC. Employers also provide some information, though fraught with a high subjectivity. To determine the best school to attend you would need to ask yourself which programme you wish to study, when you want to study and what you want to do with it (what kind of job or business you want to do with it). There is no university in Nigeria (or anywhere else for that matter) that can claim it is the best in all engineering courses.

As for Uniben's case, did you go to COREN website. The story of Structural engineering and computer is outdated, that happened a long time ago. Electrical/electronics, mechanical and petroleum have joined them in 2011. 5 courses from one school in few years. They is no guarantee that other departments - chemical, civil and production would not join soon, especially production. My advice if you are studying any of Elect/elect, mech or petroleum or even production in UNIBEN, catapult yourself to another school as soon as you can, its never too late.

@Poster, please whatever you do, do not attend any private universities to study engineering in Nigeria, you would regret you did. Employers have written to Covenant that their graduates do not take initiative; they wait to be told to do everything. They also do not understand fundamental theories may be they use softwares to teach them engineering. I do not blame them though afterall they need to take permission to go out of campus, they can't use phones and they can't even determine what is good or bad for themselves. What a regimented society, more like a primary school.

which university would you recommend me to study Elect/Elect engineering?
Re: Which Nigerian University Is The Best To Study Engineering? by tunene: 9:41am On Mar 03, 2012
Talkwisdom:

which university would you recommend me to study Elect/Elect engineering?

It is a difficult question to answer. Remember, it depends on what you want to achieve after school. Some university would almost make you an electrician before you graduate why others would simply give you the rudiments and some, the theoretical background. Some people would answers to attract unnecessary attention to their school but challenge them to provide details.

Howbeit, let me give some guidance.
Don't try any of these schools because they is no guarantee that you would graduate from there or even if you graduate they is a very low probability that you would be able to practice engineering. Unless, of course, you want to work in a bank or consulting firms like KPMG, Accenture, or start a non-engineering business of your own.
Anambra State University, Uli
CRUTECH
IMSU
Any university of agriculture (the name says it) - Okpara, UNAAB, makurdi or any other one
Niger Delta University
Olabisi Onabanjo
UNIBEN (this school keeps surprising me, a strong, old generation university, suddenly started playing with its engineering departments and lost 5 out of 8, na wa o.)
Uniuyo.

Some schools over the years have shown some credibility
Unilag (This school is trying but please dig deeper)
OAU (too much strike, even when it is not their business. You might graduate having a disconnect btw part 3 and part 5)
Unilorin (this is school is one of the more stable around. NUC and COREN do not have problem with them. I know SOME of their graduates, and I THINK they are doing well)
The FUTs too are trying (one close to you might be ok) - you need to dig deeper though, some of them have issues with staff strength especially lecturers.
Then the old generation (ABU, UI and UNN). some have also complained that UNN is loosing its value and nearly everything is watereddown.
Remember no private universities (even if you have N10million to spend. If you have such amount of money go to UK, US or even Netherlands. Please Ghana, Kenya and Malaysia are not worth it; in the market, an average Nigerian graduate beats them anytime).

Be cautious with state Unis (except RSUST and Lautech, they are trying). Unless Fashola acts fasts LASU is not worth it for engineering.

One more advice, be weary of people who will tell you this school is stressful, that school wahala too much. The so called stressful schools would make you rugged. Life is rugged, Nigeria is rugged and practicing engineering in Nigeria or even anywhere else is rugged.

Ultimately, the choice is yours no matter what people say. I wish you the best. If anyone has a specific school in mind with reason let him say it.

@op, petroleum training institute, warri offers Elect. Engr, OND and HND. Its being upgraded to a degree awarding institute. Its not in jamb brochure, they advertice their forms when its on sale and organise thier own aptitude test.
Like I said ealier, u have the opurtunity to upgrade ur c.v thru numerous certification courses overd by foreign and local bodies in collaboration with the school.
I studied chem engr at unizik, and went there for some certification courses: safety, gas flaring and many chem cad and process softwares.

Lolz, I knew that people will come praising their universities here. There's definitely none of the Federal universities that stands  out as a general best in Engineering. For instance, FUTO should be the best in Electrical Electronics because of their facilities and the lecturers there. Their Petroleum Engineering department is second to non of the Federal universities (Apart from PTI - due to learning facilities). For Chemical Engineering, OAU - Ife is the best due to their long established chemical Engineering department and quality of lecturers. The analysis can continue, but there's absolutely no single best in general terms. So it depends on which Engineering you wish to study. But I advice u go to one of the basically engineering Universities (i.e federal universities of Tech) so u can have the feel and wider interaction with engineering students of other fields. It does help a lot.

If you are not naturally brilliant, do not go for unilag, if you think you can meet up,your best option still remains Unilag, For Real, Unilag will make YOU, Naturally, Unilag expecst you to be an employer of labour after graduating, Note, you can never be all that if you do not know what you are doing, satisfy yourself and put yourself in the market.sell your product as an engineer, the only place that get you started is Unilag

Nobody here mentions the great of them all:OAU. Its hard to enter the school, but the engineering training will do you incomparable good.Your life will never remain the same again.Trust me.They have veterans as profs. They had even gone a step forward. They teach you engineering valuation in addition to your core engineering training.Try it and see.

Hey, before you do so, you must make up your mind that you will read like mad though.
