I was there in the 80s. It wasn’t better. You people have it good now. You can do quite a lot online. So easy to make calls. How was that possible in the 80s? You can stay even in your bed and make money. For where then. My advice to the youths: get a vocation. The white collar jobs went with the 60s and 70s. Find something creative to do with you being the creator.

I tell you, people don't know how bad it was in the 1980's.

You mentioned calls...I came from a family that could be described as middle class, yet in the 1980's we could not afford a NITEL phone. To make calls we had to go to the nearest NITEL phone exchange to do that...for local to international calls. (There is a reason why David Mark said back then that telephones were for the rich).

Now, we can make international calls from anywhere (and even then also has to do with the steady march of technological development to some extent).

Even computers...a computer was something you saw in some offices (and most officies back then had typewriters, not computers. Bank nko?) now they are in many places...including market self.

Since when and until when?
Any chance for blacks to ever take responsibility for their own acts of omission and commission?
Any chance of that happening soon

While Lugard is responsible for some of the mess Nigeria is in, I will not blame him for our underdevelopment.

Our underdevelopment is a product of the idea since independence , that we can sell raw materials, and use the money to import our needs.

To be developed, we have to use our raw materials to develop goods and services for the global market. That will enable us to earn enough forex to meet our needs, and provide all the jobs that we need.

Statistics can be turned into things like being a consultant for NGO's like UN bodies (a family friend of my parents earned money from working as something of a consultant to a UN body a while ago

Even philosophy has its uses.

All are not pressing issues compared to food, clothing, housing and power. We need to solve those immediate problems with skilled workers before all the UN consultant nonsense.

The problem is the Fast growing middle class of 2014 has diminished beyond recognition all thanks to some policies that stifle start-ups and innovation. Remember we are now been charged over everything we do by the banks and telecommunications working to meet up with government rules.

What we have now is the upper class of 5% and the lower class. Tell me why there would be good jobs, tell me how people will bring up innovative ideas, tell me how people would trust the government in proffering solution and just tell me how people who are fighting hard for a meal per day would be able to sit and be innovative.

There is a reason why many tech giants are now heading to Ghana and Nairobi despite Nigeria having the population and even able people. Simply policy!

Imagine coming back to Nigeria to start a mechanized farming only to be over run by some special people who believed their forefathers owned the land from sahara to the bank of Atlantic ocean?

Tell me how there would be Job. With security comes peace, with peace comes imagination and with imagination comes innovation. Tell me how that can happen in a Nigeria state.

I wish the British can recolonize Nigeria again, take power away from Nigerians. The days of our colonial masters was far better than what Nigerians are forcing through the throat of our people. Buhari said he was going to offer change, but we failed to ask him what change he was going to offer us, now is clear like DSTV the change he was talking about. Bigotry, Ethnicity and religious nepotism, poverty, political witch-hunt, religious cleansing, making cows more valuable than humans. British, come take settlement back, we no longer want independence anymore. We need British rule again

We operate a nearly-collapsed economy but they keep deceiving us that our economy is on good shape. I was happy the world bank told us the truth recently for once. Nigeria is on the verge of collapse but millions of blind youths are busy fighting on social media over corrupt politicians they see as their mentors or godfathers, those who don't even give a hoot about their future. Just recently , Toyota moved an assembly plant to Ghana but such need would never make headlines in Nigeria. These are the things they'd not want you to know so they could keep mortgaging your life. We're only giants of Africa on paper and population. I feel sorry for my country.
The average Nigerian carries the mentality of a secret cultist who uses number to judge supremacy. We are just few poor countries merged forcefully into one huge budget sharing country. That's why any thread about African development is always littered with talk of numbers and some phantom neighborhood 99% cannot afford.

That's the thing, there comes a time when we have to stop blaming the colonial powers for all our problems.

Blaming the colonial powers serves a lot of useful political uses...you can mobilize a mass of people by saying 'It is their fault' while saying that the problem comes from within may be truthful, but won't get one votes at all.

There is unemployment because population is exploding more than jobs. And the so called graduates dont have skills that can be converted into value. Graduates of philosophy, statistics and international relations are currently useless to Nigeria as it is. We need people who are skilled in mechanized agriculture, fabric spinning and manufacturing, renewable energy, modular construction, Fisheries, logistics solution, primary technical education, waste recycling, etc. If we move into fields that will directly solve Nigerian problems, there will be jobs everywhere.

Stop blaming youths. It is this useless buhari govt that is the problem. I was working part-time in a foreign ngo wanting to kickoff special breeds of tilapia and poultry. It was supposed to employ at least 40 personnel in benin city. They just put everything on hold due to reports of insecurity and astronomically high cost of feeds. That was supposed to be an experience for me before going to start up on my own but now I'm disillusioned. Bleep that pigshit buhari

China was a bulsh1t country of poor people. They looked round the world and saw that people love gadgets and equipment so much.
So the Chinese built factories for manufacturing all this gadgets and equipment.
People used to laugh at them that "Made in China" is a fake product.
But today, everything is made in China and their whole nation is rolling in money .
All their youth are employed.
-
Nigeria looked round the world and saw that white men are using latest gadgets and equipment.
Nigeria went to import the gadgets so that we too can rub shoulder with whitemen.
We didn't build any industry.
Today, there's no money to buy the gadgets and all the youth are unemployed.
People are kidnapping each other to get ransom money to buy phone and credit.

The way you Nigerians are rejoicing over Kanu's arrest, one would think that Nigeria's problems are over.
Someone actually fighting and creating awareness of the rot in Nigeria regardless of his mistakes is being insulted and ridiculed.

I also came from middle class family and we had NITEL phone.
-70's, we lived in Surulere Lagos, we had a phone
-80's, we lived outside Lagos in the east, No phone. There was no NITEL setup for phone
-late 80's, we lived in Ijanikin (toward Badagry). No phone. No NITEL Setup for phone.
-late 80's - mid 90's, Yaba. We had NITEL phone.
-90's to mid 2010. Ikoyi. Initially a phone and later the total collapse of NITEL. No more NITEL phone.
we were always going to NITEL office to complain about phone line and get them to fix dial tone for us.
It was quite stressful and ultimately NITEL collapsed.
Each person bought their Nokia phone.
Basically, we always had a phone where NITEL setup was available. But the service was bad O and expensive.

The number of jobs are shrinking and the number of people looking is growing everyday,” said 46-year-old Julius Oshie, a job agent for the past five years, as he explained how the job market had dramatically changed.

There you have it, one of the big unemployment issues is overpopulation, it is more bad to a country without innovative pratical ideas to create jobs/employment. Also,an unfriendly government policies with thieves in high places... It will get worse if we continue in our bad ways of doing things.

Just the other day, madam finance minister said mass employment won't be happening any time soon.

The thing MDAs now do is that, if a director retires, they spilt his/her salary into six or less so as to employ six or less new staff.

Nigeria debt profile triple under him, manufacturers are leaving the country to ghana because of his economics policies n u say he's not the problem.

Its painful really painful indeed. The reason we are in this mess is simply because the sector that should employ all these youth is moribund. Thats the manufacturing sector. Manufacturing is dead in Nigeria for one single reason. The Agricultural sector that is supposed to provide raw materials is non existent. Until the government decides to revamp the agric sector. It will only get worse.
When we are shouting on the top of our voices for a switch to Mechanized Agriculture someone in Aso rock is still talking of grazing routes. Even the few farmers who go to farm will get their produce either eaten or trampled on by Cattle herds.
So we should prepare for the worst.
