Both parties had Conservative and Liberal wings based on Geographical location. Generally North was progressive and South was Segregationist. The Conservatives supported segregation while the Progressives supported integration. Progressives include Northern Rockefeller Republicans.

So this was a fight between North and South, between Conservatives and Progressives. Republicans ended up absorbing and playing to the segregationists and that defines the Republican party till today.

The parties as how they stand today coalesced around this issue with Segregationists moving to join the Republicans due to Democratic leadership support of civil rights. The career of Strom Thurman shows a racist who moved from Dems to Republican over this issue while the likes of Byrd and Biden recanted their previous positions and continued with the Democrats.

If you want to know who is who now, just check who the Confederate States vote for and who the Yankee emancipator States vote for. That's all you need to know. Stop trying to tell Akata people what they know all the way from Umudike.
