The Senate on Thursday passed the Petroleum Industry Bill and approved 3 per cent for the host communities

The upper chamber passed the PIB, 2021 after the clause by clause consideration of the report of its joint committee on Petroleum (Upstream, Downstream and Gas) on PIB.

Although the Senate approved three per cent for the host communities despite protests from the South-South lawmakers, who advocated 5 per cent.

The Senate had before then, held a closed session with the Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mele Kyari.


Senate President Ahmad Lawan congratulated the lawmakers and said the Ninth National Assembly has achieved one of its fundamental legislative agenda.

“The demons (of PIB) have been defeated in this Chamber. We have passed the bill,” he said.

I just don't know whether to weep or laugh because of this news and most especially where I read that 3% have been given to the host community.


3% is like a crumb which fall from the table, not even the crumbs on the table but the crumb that fall from the table so that it will be picked on the floor by ants cos even the dogs would reject it.....

Shame on all of you who allow yourselves in that Niger Delta to be trashed like this?

Even your senators were advocating for 5% which is still nothing to write home about judging from the environmental degradation that your lands have been subjected to over the years since crude was discovered, indeed their is a great veil that is covering the eyes of this nation, people just get by with any thing that the leaders dish out to them......

This is false.

The Nigeria Minerals and Mining Act, 2007, vests the ownership of all minerals, including gold, in the Federal Government.

The Act vests control of all properties and minerals in Nigeria in the Federal Government and prohibits unauthorised exploration or exploitation of minerals.

What benefits have the host communities benefited from the 13% derivation paid to the states and the NDDC setup to cater to their needs? Absolutely nothing.

The question you should sincerely ask yourself. When Jonathan was at helm of affairs. PDP controlled the National assembly for 16 years. This same bill was sent to them, why did they fail to pass the same bill for close to 16yrs of PDP in power?

Now that the PIB has been passed into law, I hope this would turn around the situation of the country for good. Slow and steady let's keep correcting the anomalies in the existing system.
