You reverse psychology has failed you.

The only anti-Yoruba nitwit around here is you.

You have some nerve.
Stop deviating, just answer the question:
When exactly did "Oba" become a "generic yoruba word for king" ? Indeed the word emir also means king in northern nigeria, but we all know it is a foreign (arabic) title.

Don't let me descend on you.

Trust me, you won't be the same.

I already told you my profession, let's leave it at that.

OK, let me teach you a little bit of facts and reality:

The word Oba is the title of the Oba of Benin: Omo n'Oba n'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo.

The yoruba started copying this title rather late in the colonial era, indeed at the beginning of the colonial era they would refer to themselves as "oni of ife, sir adesoji aderemi" but late in the colonial era they changed all that to start calling themselves "oni of ife, oba adesoji aderemi".
By the way adesoji aderemi is the first yoruba monarch to officially copy the title of the Oba of Benin.

I don't care about your profession, your life of whatever, with regards to you, I only care about this subject which we are discussing.
And you are not only wrong, you don't actually seem able to accept or recognize the truth and recognize your total lack of knowledge in this matter.

It seems your argument is "I said it, therefor it is true". Your language shows that you are a teenager, look your brain is not totally developped yet.

My friend, I am already teaching you as we speak. Your case is just as that of a primary school pupil telling his phd holding teacher to come and take lessons from the pupil.

Your delusion is great.

"Oba" is a generic Yoruba term adopted by the Benin ruling class, take it or leave it.

Furthermore, assuming you actually take the time to study secular history, then you'll be aware that the term isn't original to the then Benin empire.

The thing with you is that you just make claims with absolutely 0 substantiation.

I asked you already when the word "Oba" became a "generic yoruba term" meaning king. You are yet to answer.
Now I shall also ask you when the Benin royal house "adopted it" since it is your new unsubstantiated claim.

Once again, let me repeat actual reality: in the early colonial era, only the Oba of Benin aswered the title Oba.

Prior to colonisation and slavery, my ancestors answered to the title of Oba.

Since anyone can remember, my parents, majestic rulers always have and probably always will answer to such terms.

You've finally managed to write a part of your speech in understandable english, ok.

1) I refered to the colonial era because it is more documented than the precolonial era.
2) it is weird to claim that before the colonial era your monarchs used the title "Oba" to refer to themselves, yet they didn't use that title in the early days of the colonial era and started using it around the end of the colonial era when it was certain that the british were going away and using the title "sir" didn't matter anymore.
3) The earliest report about the Oba of Benin refers to him with his title "Oba" and that was in the 1600's.
4) The difference between history and news is that history deals with events which people can't remember because they weren't born yet when those events took place, and nobody alive today can remember things which happened in the precolonial era because they were not born yet.

5) you lack basic knowledge of the concept of time and that of history.

I warned you but you wouldn't listen.

Now I'm going to give you that work that you so duely need.

Whilst you concentrate on bastardising history and picking hair, I'm going to bowl you off the lawn.

Watch this

I spent the best part of my time on NLand praising the Benin empire, yet, traitors such as you leave me with no choice but to put in this work.

The Benin empire was a treacherous empire, one of the worst political structures ever known to West Africa.

The only reason that Britannica could've falsely asserted that the term Oba is Benin and the fact that Benin Republic was named after Benin when everyone knows that it should've retained its name "Dahomey" or better yet "Yorubaland" given the vast amount of our people that existed there and still does to this very day, was the fact that these were the enemies within.

Don't get me started with the treachery that this good for nothing institution led us into, from colluding with the Potoki to waging senseless and counterproductive wars against the very people to whom they adopted the language of their ruling class.

The rulers of the Benin empire were responsible for the success that the Potoki had in certain parts of West Africa.

From trading in guns and munition with the enemy to actually waging senseless wars on their neighbours instead of uniting and pushing back the evil invaders.

You haven't learnt from history, now you want to double back and created a false narrative.

It was bound to end in tears for you and your psychotic intervention.

Any questions?

We will defeat all our enemies, where ever they present themselves.

This is what we got from your ruling class in return for bringing them into our sphere of influence.

Betrayal, treachery and you aren't fairing any different.

1)For your information, the invaders of west africa were the british and the french. except a small island or peninsula, no part of west africa was invaded by the portuguese.
2) Benin empire fought against the british while your "glorious ancestors" were too cowardly to put up a fight against the british
3) It seems you are pained with the fact that Benin republic named itself after Benin rather than "yorubaland". by the way, it seems you believe the word "land" is a yoruba word.
4) You don't seem to understand that words are not statical, their definitions change over the years. Many people who refer to themselves as "yoruba" today didn't get that name from their ancestors.
5) Your ethnic revisionism hits a bric wall when confronted with reality : what was named after yoruba or oduduwa or oyo or ife ? absolutely nothing, because all these were none entities.
6) You guys just make up stories and want the entire world to believe them as if that was reality.
7) Your "realm of influence" only exists in your imagination, not in reality.

The slave trade wasn't the main business of Benin which was mostly selling palm oil, ivory and many other things, the slave trade was mostly done in the slave coast.

There aren't many words in the African languages that doesn't have an Etymology.

Once again, there is no etymology for most african words, and west african words especially, because our ancestors didn't have a written language, so these written words are new born babies with no history.
