Why would one leave a lucrative job to go abroad and work menial jobs?. If combined family income is up to N1 million naira monthly perhaps no need to move

Not all abroad is "abroad". Choose the country wisely - it is triple hard when the country is not English speaking.

Be careful how you get into the country.

Understand that in your first year you will be tested, but it gets better. Take advantage of ALL the social assistance programs available. Electricity support to pay for electric bills, Rent support to pay for rent, Works assistance to help you get by while you look for work, University loan assistance to go to school to upgrade, Food banks for free food, Salvation army for free food and clothes and utensils, Provincial help for furniture. Do not raise shoulders, take the assistance first. If you have children below 18 apply for CCB, every child is paid 500-600 CAD monthly. OHIP for free healthcare. Do not compare yourself with anyone in your first year(This is for Canada)

Do not do a menial job more than 6 months, even 3 months of menial work is enough to show employers that you have Canadian experience, Even if you came in as a refugee, take a loan/grant and study to be a PSW/CNA, take a loan and buy a car and drive uber or apply to work in a call center.

Realistic advice that considers both sides of the divide. cool

Something is fundamentally wrong in this story.
If neighborhood is infested with gangs, move
If public school is infested with gangs (I have never heard this) change school.
I find it hard to believe that between the man and wife they could not find call center jobs or sales associate jobs that would have taken care of rent and bills. The 600 paid to their child would have sorted out feeding

Lets assume a very terrible situation. Oga is working in poorly-paying stingy call center or as a sales associate earning $2000 after tax
Madam is working in the bakery part-time at Loblaws earning $16 per hour. Lets say she works for 4 hours so she can stay with the children. in a month she will earn $1700 after tax. Combined income in $3700. Plus monthly payment to child $4300

Rent for 2 bedroom $1600
Phone bills for two $70
internet $50
Food $600
Electricity $100
Landlord pays water, garbage and gas bills
Monthly bus pass for two $250
New clothes $100
Netflix $14.99

SAVINGS MONTHLY $1515.01

This is in the worst situation. The only thing I can think of that could have happened here is the man rented a luxury apartment. I know because I also made this mistake - I rented in Rockcliffe village when I first arrived undecided cry
thanks very much for this analysis for Canada. This thread almost scared the shit out of me. Now i can breathe.

The amount you mentioned is not the AVERAGE rent for 2bedrooms in US. Please verify via Google.
About 10 states costs half of the average.
But,
The minimum wage for an hour in US is about $10 or more. If you are working for 8hrs mon - Fri for 4weeks, that's 160hrs, multiply this by 10, = $1600. One can choose one bedroom or rent some of the cheap inns at a far lower amount.
This is for common jobs
Other bills including food is cheap.

So one can comfortably save half of the pay and can even increase the number of working hours by adding maybe Saturdays.

Bro, craigslist is there for you to check the average monthly rent not weekly..

You just new commot it takes a year for things to set in. Abroad is depression. Every single Nigeria living there are depressed and that includes doctors, lawyers and so called IT y'all keep yapping about. The first 10 million successful Nigerians live and work right here in Nigeria. It is a trillion times easier to make it in Nigeria than anywhere else in the world. But the average Nigerian is brainwashed

I don't know what you guys mean by good jobs in Nigeria with the kind of inflation of prices of commodities at the moment. Some talked about bills, but you didn't mention that you will have uninterrupted power and water supply, stable internet connection etc and all of these are pay as you go.

I left Naija 4 years ago for UAE, within two years of living in Dubai, I built a house in Naija. I'm an Engineer by profession. Most people complaining about Dubai are within unskilled labour sector. Nigerian Nurses, Engineers, qualified Teachers, lecturers, Technician etc earn good wages in UAE. Most of them are in oil sectors which are far more lucrative than oil sectors in Nigeria.

YOU MUST HAVE BEEN LIVING IN THE GHETTOIN NIGERIA SO ANYWHERE ABROAD IS OK FOR YOU.

THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE AND KIDS IN NIGERIA TODAY THAT DO NOT KNOW ABOUT OR EVEN ENCOUNTER ALL YOU HAVE SAID IN THEIR DAILY LIVES.

ABROAD IS NOT HEAVEN...BUT IF YOU ARE DISADVANTAGED IN NIGERIA, IT IS A LOT BETTER.

THERE IS ACCESS TO GOOD HOSPITALS, SCHOOLS ETC IN NIGERIA AS WELL, NA MONEY KILL AM.

ABROAD IS BEST WHEN YOU ARE SINGLE AND BELOW 30YRS SO YOU CAN SUFFER BEFORE YOU CAN ENJOY LATER.

ANOTHER THING IN THE ABROAD IS RACISM...EXPECT TO GROW A THICK SKIN WHEN YOUR KIDS ARE DISCRIMINATED AT...IT WOULD SURELY HAPPEN. AND ALSO, BRACE YOURSELF TO LET DEM KIDS UNDERSTAND WHY YOU TOOK THEM AWAY FROM THE COMFORT OF NIGERIA, TO THIS NEW HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT.

this is the best advise. All those who are saying my kids would get the best life and I wonder which life are you talking about. Your kids would face discrimination and bullying even from adults. Una never see anything.

Why would anyone leave Nigeria to travel to countries like Cyprus, Malta, Greece for greener pasture?? That’s insane.

You only visit those places for tourist reasons.
Abroad to me means US, Uk, Canada then France and Germany if you can overcome the linguistic barriers.

I went to Athens and I was filled with sadness seeing many Nigerians jobless and frustrated.
You’d see them at Syntagma square with drums.
Those are beautiful places if you are a tourist. Lots of archeological sites to visit and learn but never places for the average Nigerian to emigrate to.

If you go to the USA you will see the same Nigerians begging on the street.... I understood your point though. My advise to people is to travel for a reason... not to go and hustle.. it is only 2 out of 10 that make it out of hustle. Get skills and get help.

If you are in US the sky is your limit but if you in Europe their is a huge glass ceiling that would limit you. Unless you are in ICT or medical line.

2 stories

1st story

I met a waiter at rhapsody in ikeja shopping mall, who regretted leaving Nigeria for dubai, i asked him why? He said he left his stable job to Dubai, got to dubai and was earning 70k, was also living in a shared accommodation with 4 people, after working for 5 months, he resigned and left Dubai for Nigeria.

2nd story

My cousin left his well paid job for Canada, sold his properties in naija and moved to Canada with his family, first 8 month of his life was hell upon earth, from bills to bills, from one low wage job to another, the neighborhood he was living with his family was infested with gangs, the public school was also infected with gangs, his children got bullied because of their accents, his wife, even though supportive couldn't get a good job, bros was tired of everything.

So he decided to solve his problem by moving back, after the scrap they could save in Canada, my guy and his family moved back to Nigeria, they had to start afresh, thank God, he had a supportive family and friends, they use their connections to help him find another good job but what is lost is lost till today he still regrets selling his properties for Canada.
Hmmm, another angle someone must think and think deep about it. Europe is not that lubricant as some people think

you have not added accomodation fees and the compulsory 10 million required before you can enter canada. so in total i would say you need roughly 20 million naira ?

I move away from Nigeria not only because of me but for the future kids cool and better life for them.

Nigeria was so bad for me, that I travelled to Libya 2 times and I created a thread about it the first time here in 2011.

Libya of 2021 with all the war still better past Nigeria because they know it’s war but Nigeria is not at war yet we can’t sleep with eye closed

Na papa who no hustle dey wait for his children to feed him when he is old cheesy cheesy

I hate it when people complain about bill they paid when they leave Nigeria but have forgotten that those bills are the reason, that country you are living is functioning.

Good health care, Jobs, good education, great transportation and Security.

Please stop converting those money to Naira because you aren’t spending Naira over there.

Can I enjoy basic things in Nigeria with 50K Naira or even 100K salary vs $3K basic salary in the USA vs €2K salary in Germany?

In most European or Asia countries, Education and healthcare are free and they are world class.

Ask yourself that question
If you want comot for Nigeria, just plan am well, I know many guys that went to UAE as Doctors, Nurses and IT professionals.

God bless you!!!
