Naija may be hard, but it’s one of the freest places to actually live. In Most developed countries you pay for everything to almost the air you breathe. As a Nigerian who is not used to that you may find it very difficult to adjust coz u probably won’t be prepared for it. People succeed though, but with extra hard work, defined planning and a good support system I think.

As for the person talking about Northerners not traveling abroad. That is not true. They do, but they’re not as vocal as our Southern folks, especially in the media space.

i know so many Regional Bank Managers, CBN staff(that was appointed with her Masters), Bank Managers receiving almost 700k a month still moving to Canada. I can count almost 10 of them. Why do you think they are moving abroad and never for once thought of coming back even after first taking up a Survival Job to kickstart their life in the New Country.

It's not always the money, standard of living and peace of mind count too.

It's possible, but depends on so many factors and coupled with the serial devaluation and hyper inflation, I believe we should move past this mentality of 200k/month as a standard for salary earners.

We both know that the purchasing power of 200k has reduced with time and then come to think of it, what percentage of the population earns equal to OR greater than such amount?

Anybody that wants to move abroad, I'd say go for it but research, read, ask questions, and most importantly manage your expectations.

Well, I have no stories to share.

But I'll say lack of information is what pushed many into the suffering they are passing through overseas.

Some are tricked my pictures they find online.

Some are tricked by a common lie that things are so easy abroad and you would be handed a dream job on your arrival.

Some think accommodation is easy to get and you would have made enough salary to pay house rent.
But they don't even realize that in some places rent is monthly and you pay light and water bills.
Nothing is free over unlike in Nigeria where you can get water for free

Many people even believe that in the overseas, graduating from a university means automatic jobs

It literally has changed my uncle's life for the better...I'm so so so happy for him. Omo we sent him all the necessary proves he needed for the Asylum to pull tru. Thank God it did

Let me tell you a story.

My brother left school and job prospects in Nigeria and went abroad. He had a student visa, some dollars and was expecting a relation to pick him up at the airport. That was about it. When he got to the airport in Houston, no one was there waiting to pick him up. In fact, the relation called him and told him to start heading back, that he has no interest in having him around. He had nowhere to sleep. Hustle started. He had to go to the branch of our Nigerian church in Houston to beg to sleep. They pitied him and accommodated him, and allowed him to leave on the chairs of the church for a week until he got a restaurant job. He contemplated coming back home and in fact bought a ticket, took a taxi to the airport, but changed his mind at the last minute. Resolving to stay back, he intensified his "hustle", working in restaurants where they treated him like shit and started going back to school.

Five years later, he is now employed in two places, making north of $120k as a software developer. Planning to start his own company and offer jobs to his developer friends he left back in Lagos, many of whom are still struggling to find a good job. In fact, some of them are now working for him (online). He got his green card legally, and planning to marry soon.

What am I saying? Most Nigerians give up easily when they go abroad. Abroad is not a bed of roses. You have to work, have to show a strong desire to succeed. Nothing is going to be handed to you on a platter. For many Nigerians who have had it easy before travelling out, this is often difficult to understand. They find that they can't cheat the system. No lecturer will collect money from you to bump your score. You suddenly can't enter a bus without paying by lying to the conductor that you lost your money. Those tricks with which you survived in Nigeria no longer work. You have to learn new tricks. This is the part where many people fail and is probably the only lesson here. Whether you are in Nigeria or abroad, you have to show a desire to succeed given your environment. IF this desire is not there, failure awaits!

Like someone mentioned in the first or second page, traveling abroad is always good for someone who is single and under 30. I always tell my friends that have families and are doing well in Nigeria that there's no point coming abroad. You don't leave all your connections and traveled to uncertainties.

The truth is if you moved abroad legally, it takes you a minimum of 3 to 5 years to settle down provided you followed and do the right thing.

I've been reading UAE hard, here and there all through the thread. UAE is not abroad this, and that. Granted it's not abroad but it's where I am currently and where I work I earn a minimum of 2k aed...even though it's the regular 9hrs plus 3 hrs overtime. It's not much, but for someone who came into the country 6 months ago and only started working a month and a half ago with zero UAE work experience, it is something. It's a platform to build on for better jobs in future.
The truth that I've discovered about moving to a different country, based on my own and other's experience, is that a lot depends on your attitude, drive, willingness to succeed and your worldview.

Nothing is handed to you abroad. You must earn every dime and even work more than you're paid..But the beautiful thing is opportunities abound if your attitude is right and your focus is steady.

What's the point of "relocating" only to end up in poverty or crime? In South Africa you will see guys from a particular part of Nigeria selling airtime recharge vouchers on the street. Is it not the height of stupidity to sell your lucrative business in Onitsha to go and hussle in the crime-infested streets of South Africa? Or leave your teaching job at a federal university to go and be shop security guard in London?

Yes, there is no point relocating abroad and ending in poverty. Most cases it is the lack of information and planning that makes some people burn the bridge and not look back. But then, on your second point of leaving a teaching job, I will not totally condemn and speak against any one's decision. I have some few colleagues in this line both state and federal universities, unfortunately some of them may have been there by chance, meaning it's either they are not passionate about academics, the truth is not every lecturer out there, is really a research "material". Some of them eventually get lucky and use the PhD as a cover up. This is part of the problem they have in the educational research sector even here in our parastatals. Some even end up being stagnant because they could not get on with their PhD here in Nigeria. I will not believe you referred to an already established lecturer or professor.

Will their connections stop their children from being kidnapped? Will their connections allow them to travel by car without having to pay armed security?

Travel to Uncertainties? If their house catches on fire in Nigeria, is there a fire station less than a mile away? Will firemen come out within 5-10 minutes free of charge to save their lives? No.Life in Nigeria is the definition of uncertainty.

Girls leaving here to come to Nigeria and look for a guy then the must be the luckiest person on earth.

A sane advice is for anyone with a good job in Nigeria considering moving abroad to first visit the country of his choice first, observe life overseas and finally return after comparing both climes.
I know a set of people will throw tantrums upon reading what I said above. To them the only thing stopping them from success is a visa and a ticket - upon stepping on any country in Europe or America, they are automatically billionaires like Dangote. Lack of research has really hurt many making such life-changing decisions.

Roughly 20 years ago when I visited the US embassy in Lagos, I observed a man sitting on a wheelchair, holding a sign saying stuff totally against the US government, right in front of the embassy. I was touched and wanted to know what his problem was. Anyone going to that embassy around then would remember him - he was crippled, not begging, rather having a one-man protest with his visible signs strapped all over his wheelchair.
After I got done with my business in the embassy, I came out and saw him on same wheelchair with same sign and asked him what his problem was. He told me a lot about his life in the US the decades he spent here and how he ended up on the wheelchair.
But his main advise relevant to this topic is what I said in the first paragraph, which is still relevant today - don't make irrational decisions, do your proper research.

The grass is not always greener on the other side. Everyone's success or failures overseas depend largely on those you are surrounded by in whatever clime you find yourself in.
If you are surrounded by Nigerian professionals willing to show you the ropes, you might just be able to secure a professional job like them and start your life.

On the flip side, if you're surrounded by the Nigerian gangs into drugs, gangbanging, hardcore nightlife, you are bound to be like them as well.

Many in the latter category tend to forget what brought them overseas in the first place, and disregard the most important thing they need - establishing their legal status in the country they're in. The worst story I've heard is when someone allowed his stay to expire and said he forgot to do what he needed to do to renew it. He said he was too deep into partying and clubbing and forgot. If you know why you came somewhere, keep track of how to stay there legally.

On a realer note, one big advise would be don't sell your house if you own one in Nigeria to go overseas when you don't know what to expect there.
Many of those you will meet in these countries are unwilling to return to Nigeria because of the constant bad news about Nigeria, and mainly because they have no where to stay when they get back home.
If some had a place to stay, they'd gladly return home. So, why sell a home you already own when many people in the country you're heading to are still struggling with owning one home in Nigeria?
They can always face the bad news like everyone else in Nigeria that lives with it. Not return to Nigeria to become homeless.

Don't resign from a good job you already have in Nigeria. Visit the place first and see things for yourself. You'd be surprised from that experience alone, but it's worth it.

I've heard of stories of people planning to relocate to foreign countries and end up getting abandoned by the friends and family members they relied on, right there at the airport. So, how do you expect to know the system anywhere when you don't know anyone to show you the ropes?

Like someone said in the earlier posts, information is key. Lack of information is what makes a lot of Nigerians make hasty decisions.
