1. The building has been under construction for more than 10 years

2. The developer has started demolition of the house although it wasn't done properly.

My suspicion: Anambra is prone to erosion which could explain why the building sank in the first place. Should I throw in high cost of building materials to the mix?

Lagos is not the worst but is more focused because it is a City,as there are many others happenings unreported
in Nigeria.This is a village,where buildings are erected without due supervisions by quack Contractors.
I would only agree with you,if you implored the Lagos State govt and others elsewhere to upgrade their duty so that we have
less occurrences.

alot of those times the clients are to be blamed. Yes, they think they can cut costs by cutting corners. Check the building very well there may be no engineer supervising it, they think because they have built a bongalow before they have all the experience. The mix ratio will be clearly written 1:2:4 they will tell you that 1:8:16 can still do the job because it has worked before in their previous projects. How many should i say, i ve seen alot of clients behavior to know how they like to assume they know it all. Go to our property section here on nairaland, its filled with too many ITKs that i ve stopped visiting there. Their engineers give them advice and they run to property section and start asking and seeking for any means to cut costs against what their engineers prescribed without even thinking of the repercussions.

This is outrageous in this country, where artisans will not allow professionals to do their job with appreciate building codes.
Artisans are out to criticize the professional engineers and also reduce the price inorder to be more favoured.

Sometimes i do wonder why some engineers could be so heartless to use substandard material and build a house even when good morning was given to them, they will prefer to use that person's money for their personal use and use little part of the money to build substandard home for someone. Such criulty isn't good

Some clients thinks they are so smart, thereby dictating the quality and quantity of materials an engineer should use, imagine when a client will force an engineer to use 2.5mm iron against 5mm.

He said as an engineer, if you call him to construct he will give you his budget and plan,but if you ask him to reduce the money and manage, especially when it comes to cement and sand,he will step down from the job..why
because the day whatever he builds collapses it won't be the person that asked you to manage, na u wey build am dem go hold..build not for money but for your reputation to be upheld and recommended to others

The news says the collapse happened in Anambra, you totally ignored that but found a way to attack Lagos state, selective reasoning of the highest order

Only for Anambra way three different people go be landlord for 3 story building. As u de finish one decking na so another person go second floor land Begin build na so en go de go until de finish

If the ministry in charge would do their job, by demolishing any structure with sub-standard materials then everybody will adhere to sticking to the right one. SON can also go into confiscating bad building materials which do not pass their test of quality

maybe hes a builder. know the difference bw a builder, an engineer and an architect. a builder is mostly seen on site, no engineer stays on site much but they are in charge and approves anything that is done. so if the client has been convinced by those builder called 'baba' that no need for a structural engineer then this is what they get. engineers are not very good in convincing clients, u tell them know they face something else.
