Yes but I work as an electrical engineer with the government for years now and also friends with civil engineers and architect's

Why can't he read civil giving him an edge to compete for jobs in the government and other companies

Then learn autocad 3d and co by the side and even on the job developing his architectural expertise .

Bricklayers with experience do both civil and architectural jobs and even get the jobs also remember

He can leave university with a civil degree and architectural expertise .And civil engineering is broad (bridges ,Roads etc not limited to buildings only

Look for a job placement at the same time independently bidding for jobs based on his ability to draw building plans

Remember our terrain people with connections get the jobs not even the professionals

Summarily..1, he graduates a civil engineer looking for work 2, by the side he learns how to design building plans and architectural designs 3, he starts looking for building jobs as a civil engineer and uses archi expertise to draw his plan

I will say go for architecture. Civil engineering limits your creativity and innovation unlike architecture,
job opportunity in architecture has a wider range especially if you know how to prospect unlike civil engineers who have to be employed mostly at times before you get paid.

Civil engineers can’t work without an architect whilst architect can work alone.

These days most architects also learn civil engineering on the job while supervising building projects.

Try and create a profile on LinkedIn to network and share your stories and journey with like minded people who will be willing to help and guide you along the part you will choose.

Ehya civil cant work on road project, bridge project, drainage, dam, canal, engineering survey, oil rig construction, steel related construction waste management facility without architect....d way ignorant ppl talk with full confidence on nairaland sef.....lol

Please don't saturate this IT field for them. People that want to study Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, Public Administration, Chemistry, Geography, e.t.c. please let them do, village people will be happy to put them in permanent poverty.

Civil Engineering is far better than Architecture. My uncle who has been practicing as an Architect for 32 years now told me that people building houses in Mowe, Ofada, e.t.c. are not ready to pay more than 50,000 Naira for a building plan. But a civil/building engineer will supervise the building from foundation to furnishing and we charge between 20 and 25% of cost of the project as professional feel.

Most of the buildings and other construction works you see are actually designed by civil/building engineers because they do a lot on design too. Architect just specialize in designs.

Bro, you don't know anything about civil engineering, you don't need any capital to establish, even you don't need office self for a start, just learn how to do structural design then you're good to go. That's what we do and we thank Baba God for today.

Lol,.see ehn I get more than 18 friends wey study civil engineering only about 5 or so were able to practice wella

Check My recent conversation with one of them.

Since you are average in maths then Architecture would be your best bet. Engineering is actually more of maths than drawings. You only translate your designs to drawings which would be done by a draughtsman.

SO THE BALL IS IN COURT
Thank you sir. I thank i would purchase a change of course form for architecture

An Architect designs a structure...
A Civil Engineer gives bone to the structure...
These two are professional courses...
They often shortchange each others work...
My advice is this; while in school try to gain practical knowledge by visiting construction sites....
The building industry is a sustainable one...
Good luck...

Listen, if you know you don't have a crazy imagination, don't go for architecture, just respect yourself and enter civil engineering. Because as an architect, you need to be imaginative enough to bring out drawings that can wow your clients.

I am an Architect. 15 years since graduation and registered with ARCON and an NIA full member. Since you made your option Architecture vs Civil Engineering, I'll give you an honest response: Please choose CIVIL Engineering.

The reason is that it is more versatile. If you want to work in employment, you will have more opportunities and higher chances in other sectors than an Architect would. For example, road construction, oil and gas, and structural engineering consulting. It's only in Architectural consulting firms and more recently, in property development firms that Architects are sought. They may go to other sectors, but they may not work as architects there.

The second reason you should consider civil engineering. As an architect in consulting, my projects come from clients directly. For every project going more than one floor, I MUST engage a civil engineer, or advise my client to engage one. So a civil engineer gets paid for every Architect's project that is not a bungalow. My go-to civil engineer receives projects from many other Architects -without needing to get jobs from clients personally. This translates, on average, to more projects for civil engineers in the building consulting sector than architects (they may not be paid as much for one project, but on average if you are good, you will have more volume of work because your source will be from several architects, and this translates to more money)

The third reason is immigration. I recommend choosing a course that is easier to immigrate with should you consider immigration later. Do a google search now for occupations in demand in Canada or Australia, you will most likely find civil engineering (or its related synonyms), and not Architecture.

Someone here mentioned how you can make money as a student studying Architecture. I see it as a disadvantage. As an architect in practice, the fact that clients can meet students for something that we trained years for in Nigeria is bad (Obviously, they don't get the same quality and professional service). But the point is don't study something in school that anyone can do because of the poor regulation in Nigeria.

During my time of choosing a course, I did not consider an alternative. It was Architecture or nothing. So my advice is because you are considering the two and you consider that any of them will be OK for you.

If you must choose Architecture, make sure you are absolutely passionate about it and extremely able to delay gratification and have great capability for long-suffering. It can be rewarding, no doubt. But for most people, it gets tough at first before it gets rewarding -especially if you subject yourself to the process of real professional training.

I said all I said because you made your options Architecture vs Civil Engineering. That said, PLEASE CONSIDER AVOIDING THE TWO COMPLETELY. Go for IT (your maths and physics will come in handy). The world has changed. There are easier ways to attain professional fulfilment. IT is versatile. if you are skilled, you will be sought after in every sector and qualify for most immigration programmes. Don't take my word for it, do a google search -compare entry-level salaries of IT professionals and Architecture graduates (ENTRY LEVEL). Search sites like indeed and glassdoor. Also, check occupations in demand for immigration programmes. Don't do any course that limits you to Nigeria, or with which you will have issues transitioning to work abroad even if you succeed in immigrating. IT qualifications are universal. Architecture and Civil engineering licences are local. For example, I am a registered Architect in Nigeria, but I will not be considered an architect in the UK unless I go through the process of acquiring their licence.

I hope you find my '2 kobo' opinion helpful

Architecture would have been better since you Said you are a average maths student, also, it easier to get architecture jobs (not in a company) I mean you could just design for anyone unlike Civil, also it has lesser cut off mark hence you stand a better chance, your drawing skills would be needed especially in first year and second before they introduce you to Autocad, but you can start to learn that on your own, but the problem is I don't think your jamb combination would work for arc, but if it does please go for it, the 1 year difference sef na something

You maybe able to draw so called houses albeit with a lot of mistakes but you will never be able to design large and complex buildings. Another thing, getting COREN reg is way simpler than getting ARCON reg; you only need your Bachelors degree plus some years experience but for ARCON you need a masters degree. Plus COREN is riddled with corruption. We hear how our colleagues narrate how easy it is to get registered with COREN.

Am an Architect who graduated in 2005 .My advice is go for Civil Engineering. They are better opportunities to work both as a self employed and as a government employee.
Even many Civil Engineers I know still design building and some Architects engage in building construction like Engineers.
But very few if any Architect can draw structural drawings which every building above one storey requires before approval and building. The civil engineer also does what is called calculation of structure for such building which no one else does or is capable of doing.
On the other hand ,over 10 different professions design building competing against Architects. These include the drafts man, fine Artists, Quantity surveyor,Land Surveyor, building technologist,Civil Engineers,Manson,Estate Valuers etc,all these are quack designers with little or no training in Architectural drawings but Nigerians patronize them.
I made a mistake studying Architecture and I regret it.Dont make the same mistake.

please sir i really need a break down to all of this. Are you saying a civil eng can design any structure? Nd again i knw u're experienced pls, is civil engineering maths really hard? Like HARD. Becuz i'm an average maths student who can cope wit phys nd chem. Pls advice

Civil engineers are not designers. They don’t design anything. They build. An architect can design bridges even though he has to work with a structural engineer during the design process to make the design functional. No good architect will allow a structural engineer change his design. That’s why architects are taught at least the basic principles of structures in school. In developed countries, specialized architects design cars.

Civil engineers can design based on experience of building construction even though this is not their job. In Nigeria, as the contractor, there’s more money to be made in the construction phase than the design phase.

As you can read from different comments above, there’s an overlay of duties by these two professions. But standard practice is an architect is a designer while a civil engineer is a builder. So most likely a civil engineer can design a functional duplex and nothing more, an architect can do structural detailing for a duplex and nothing more. Both are pretty specialized fields.

I studied architecture because it was hard and I was academically sound plus I didn’t want to read. I got it all wrong. This is 2021, don’t be caught up in this trap. Find a less competitive and stressful course especially if you want to partake in extra curricular activity in school. Doesn’t have to be the conventional courses everyone is doing. Don’t waste 4/5 years in school only to finish school and start looking for where you can learn a skill to survive. Study a course that gives you that flexibility
