Also having a First class degree is not what qualifies people to become professors.

The word "professor" has its origin in Latin and meant "teacher". That meaning is retained in French , Spanish etc
Primary school teachers in those countries are called professors

We need to distinguish between "professor" and Professor.

In the British System a "Professor" is one who hold "tenure" or occupies a "chair" in a university anyone else is a lecturer or Associate Professor

They have their terminology for clarification in the US
