White House unveils sweeping Antitrust Push

President Joe Biden signed a new executive order aimed at cracking down on anti-competitive practices in big tech, labor and numerous other sectors. The sweeping order, which includes 72 actions and recommendations that involve a dozen federal agencies, is intended to reshape the thinking around corporate consolidation and antitrust laws.

Those wide-ranging goals and initiatives include:

- Urging the Federal Trade Commission to "challenge prior bad mergers" that previous administrations let slide
- Pushing the FTC to ban occupational licensing restrictions, arguing they "impede economic mobility"
- Encouraging the FTC to ban or limit noncompete agreements
- Encouraging the Federal Communications Commission to restore "net neutrality" rules that were undone during the Trump administration
- Asking the FCC to block exclusivity deals between landlords and broadband providers
- Lowering prescription drug prices by supporting state and tribal efforts to import cheaper drugs from Canada
- Allowing hearing aids to be sold over the counter
Establishing a "White House Competition Council" to lead federal responses to large corporations' growing economic power

"The impulse for this executive order is really around where can we encourage greater competition across the board," the White House's chief economic advisor, Brian Deese, told CNBC's Ylan Mui in an exclusive interview that aired earlier Friday morning".

Through its tech-related actions, Biden's order aims to make the case that the biggest companies in the sector are wielding their power to box out smaller competitors and exploit consumers' personal information. The order calls for regulators to enact a slew of reforms, including increasing their scrutiny of tech mergers and putting more focus on maneuvers such as "killer acquisitions," in which firms acquire smaller brands to take them out of the market.

Net neutrality, or the idea that the company from whom you purchase internet access doesn't have the right to control or manipulate what you use it for. For example, Comcast (the parent company of NBC Universal) shouldn't be able to force Xfinity users to read NBC News over CNN, and Verizon (the new parent company of Yahoo and the Huffington Post) shouldn't be able to manipulate Fios customers into reading Yahoo News instead of the New York Times.

Net neutrality isn’t just about how fast your videos load, it’s about the free flow of information and ideas. A little over a year ago, Ajit Pai, the former Verizon lawyer that President Trump put in charge of the Federal Communications Commission, infamously gutted open internet protections. He handed companies like Comcast, T-Mobile, AT&T and, yes, his former employer Verizon the power to manipulate what we see and do online by blocking apps, throttling websites, offering freebie scams and charging expensive new fees.

The repeal of net neutrality was one of the most unpopular actions by any government agency in modern memory; people across the political spectrum were outraged. If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that no one wants their cable company or cell phone provider to screw them over more than they already do — or control how they surf the web, listen to music, watch videos or read the news.

Researchers found that the country’s largest cell phone carriers, including Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, were deliberately slowing streaming speeds to popular smartphone apps like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime and NBC Sports. (Remember that many of these companies have their own content services, so they have an economic incentive to get you to use theirs instead of their competitors, regardless of what you prefer.)

In an extreme example of the danger posed by letting the companies that run our communications infrastructure operate without oversight, Verizon was caught throttling the data services of firefighters battling the worst wildfire in California history. They tried to charge the fire department double to restore service, in the midst of a life-threatening emergency. This is exactly the type of thing the FCC rules that Ajit Pai ripped up were meant to react to and prevent.

The states’ primary reasoning for ending the benefits is that if unemployed individuals are earning less money, they will be more likely to find a job and alleviate the worker shortage. But for the vast majority of unemployment recipients, this is probably not true for several reasons.

First, only in three states (Montana, North Dakota and Wyoming) were the combined state and federal ($300 per week) unemployment benefits exceeding those states’ average wages. In other words, unemployment beneficiaries in 47 states were still receiving less money than their respective state’s average wages.

Second, a paper from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco concluded that “only a small fraction would turn down an offer to return to work at their previous wage under the CARES Act expanded UI payments.”

Third, only 3% of individuals were earning enough from unemployment such that they had no financial need to return to work. This data came from a June 17, 2021 BTIG report titled, “Labor Shortage Unlikely To Be Resolved With Expiration of Unemployment Benefits.” This report had some other interesting findings, such as:

- Only 6% of unemployment recipients would be motivated to go back to work when their unemployment benefits ended.
- Only 14% of those surveyed were getting more money from unemployment benefits than from their last job.
- After higher pay and good benefits, work flexibility was the primary motivator to get someone to return to an hourly wage position.

The BTIG study, as well as other data, strongly suggests that the increased unemployment benefits are not the primary reason we have this current worker shortage.

It actually is a childrens' playground and there's no academy involved. You simply invest in a cart and enter competitions. My nephew did it until he gave up for uni and he is not from a rich family. His parents just sacrificed a lot so he could and their sacrifice is paying off as he's now gone off to study mechanical engineering.

I have never seen a playground that cost families their homes.

The pair fought on-track on the mid-nineties. But while Hamilton was on a career path which eventually took him to McLaren, Formula 1 and multiple world championships, the huge cost of racing forced Richardson out of karting – after it cost his family their home.

It also cost Lewis dad his house. So that's a huge investment they make and I am sure they don't invest that much so their kids could play on a sandbox.
