I'm a graduate of Accounting and currently serving in Kano State.
I'm quite good in Excel and SQL. Still learning Python and I will start learning Power Bi or Tableau soon.

Please sir, based on your experience, what's the chance of someone with Accounting background? And what do I need to do to be job ready?

Thank you.

I hope this encourages you.

1. Keeping going, don't stop. Get your hands dirty by doing projects. Create a GitHub repository, get on Kaggle, post the stuffs you've done. Put your tasks out there.

2. When you feel confident enough, and backed by the array of projects in your portfolio, then you start applying for positions abroad. Yes do that, don't feel shy or not good enough, just make good applications. You'll get a lot of rejections, but keep going, all you need is to get just one.

3. When you eventually get one, you'll be given a task to do. This is where you shine. Do the task to the best of your ability. You'll be given an opportunity to present your results.

Notice that I didn't mention about your degree yet?
Well yes, that's cos in these countries, they first want to know what can you do, can you get the job done? And then they'll look, is he/she educated? Those places it's not about the best certificate for the job, it's about the best fit for the job.

4. And if you do land the job, good for you. They'll relocate you and even your family.
And why will they do that?

Cos you my friend are the best fit for the job, and they won't spare resources in recruiting your talent.

Good luck.

God bless you always.

Btw...... Accounting is numerical and would be a good foundation for a data Analyst

Please substantiate...

Hey man! I’m really busy these days, and do not have the time to write much. I only wanted to point out that you will have a great prospect as a data scientist than as a data analyst. Data science is more demanding, has comparably better pay, a shortage occupation, and more elite. Data Scientists could do the works of data analyst, but not vice versa. You may want to do further research on the aforementioned. I hope that it’s clear enough?

This came just in time. I already have advanced Excel skills, and I'm currently learning Python and SQL and hope to start Tableau and Power BI once I'm done.

Can you share resources with me or even mentor me? I'd be elated to get your number.

U don't have worries, just learn and practice to very well...

For Visualization, pick Tableau, Tableu can connect to large different type of data file...once Tableu notice ur data and source, it can update the new data online if u permit and update the graph

I love it map analysis, tree an forest graph...

Tableau is a pro

I will definitely go for Tableau. Thank you so much, sir.

You’re right, but not completely right. I had guys with literature and pol. science background in my data science boot camp, and they’re doing great as data scientists in their respective companies at the moment. No doubt, data science is more difficult!

Please Sir, what is the name of your data science boot camp, and where is the location. I would like to be part of it. Thanks

Please guide - when you say MS Excel are there specifics tool one needs to focus on?
Not really. Just ensure you learn enough to give you confidence in using Excel for data exploration, data analysis and data presentation/visualization.

Those are the three cardinals of data science. Even when you start using programming language to analyse data, you'll only be doing data exploration, analysis and visualization.

Programming is faster than GUI apps, it gives you more flexibility; you can read data from APIs and databases and most importantly, it is fast so you can work with big data without fear of "Program not responding" or "Program has crashed".

There's nothing unlearnable and that includes mathematics. It only depends on your dedication commitment.

As for your points two and three, people only hate things because they don't understand it. Once you understand mathematics and statistics your hatred for it will disappear.

Go to YouTube and search for mathematics/statistics for data science beginners. Learn everyday and you'll be surprised how far you'll go in a short time.

Untrue. Non of the the of Data Analysts in my circle hold a STEM degree. The best machine learning text I have studied was written by a social scientist.

Suspect33:
Note: Data Science is different from Data Analysis

Data Analysis is a branch in Data Science

Forget about Data Science if;

1. You Don't have a Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a relevant STEM degree

2. You hate Maths

3. You really hate Maths grin grin

Lol. Where did you learn all these...?

Suspect33:
learning the skill and getting employed are two different skills. You can learn how to perform surgeries but no hospital will employ you as a doctor without an MBBS, Same goes for Data Science, over 90 percent of job postings require a C.S or relevant STEM degree

Presently on the path - a junior data analyst.

It’s not easy but with flair and sheer determination, impossible is nothing.

For newbies -

Learn microsoft excel from beginners to advanced level (plotting, VBA, Interactive dashboard, power query . . .)

Learn SQL

Python or R (not mandatory but an added advantage)

Master any data visualization tool - Tableau, PowerBI

80% of the above and you’re good to go.

Good structure to put flesh on
