DSS manhunt: Igboho trying to get new passport, flee Nigeria, says FG

Orders IG, DSS, NIA to prevent Yoruba activist from escaping
The Federal Government has said Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, is trying to acquire a new passport to flee the country.

It added that the government had placed Igboho on the stop-list in order to facilitate his arrest and directed the security agencies to apprehend him anywhere he is found.

In the security circle, a person whose name is on the stop-list is denied all constitutional rights and privileges a citizen is entitled to.

The Federal Government’s directive against Igboho was contained in a letter by the Nigeria Immigration Service dated July 9, 2021, addressed to the Director General, Department of State Services, the Inspector General of Police and the DG, National Intelligence Agency.

The activist, a spearhead of the separatist agitation for the Yoruba Nation, had been declared wanted by the Department of State Services on allegations of stockpiling arms to destabilise the country, which he has since denied, but his whereabouts remain unknown.

The whereabouts of Igboho, a lead figure in the separatist agitation for the Yoruba Nation, has been unknown since he narrowly escaped arrest during the July 1 midnight raid by the secret police, ahead of a major rally in support of the call for Yoruba Nation in Lagos.

Following the bloody raid on Igboho’s Sooka residence, the DSS arrested and detained 13 of Igboho’s associates, adding that during a “gun duel,” it had killed two of Igboho’s supporters later identified as Adogan and Alfa.

The International Criminal Court, on Tuesday, acknowledged a 27-page petition filed by Yoruba Nation agitators signed by the Leader of Ilana Omo Oodua, Emeritus Professor Banji Akintoye; Igboho; and 49 Yoruba self-determination groups.

The petition was filed against the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd); the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN; former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai; and former Inspectors General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and Muhammed Adamu.

They accused the Nigerian leaders and security chiefs of genocide and crimes against humanity against the Yoruba people of Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, Okun Land in Kogi, and Kwara states.

The NIS letter issued to facilitate Igboho’s arrest was signed on behalf of the Comptroller General of Immigration by Assistant Comptroller General of Immigration, Investigation and Compliance, A.B. Baba.

The letter titled ‘Stop-listing of person: Adeyemo Sunday Adeniyi (aka Sunday Igboho), male, Nigerian, passport number A11613637, date of birth 10/10/1972’ was copied to all zonal controllers and control posts Nationwide.

It read, “I am directed to request that you kindly place the above-named person on stop-list. Credible intelligence revealed that Adeyemo is making efforts to obtain a police extract and/or court affidavit to enable him acquire a new Nigerian passport, apparently to facilitate his escape out of the country.

“In addition, he should be arrested wherever and whenever sighted and referred to the Director-General, Department of State Services vide letter no: S.605/A/246 dated 05 July 2021.”

The NIS spokesman, Amos Okpu, however, said he was not aware of the letter. He added that he had no update on the manhunt for Igboho.

He said, “I’m not aware of the letter. Has Ighoho been declared wanted? Well, I don’t have any information on him.”

The DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, has yet to respond to inquiries on the issue as at press time.

Following the raid on Igboho’s Sooka residence on July 1, Afunaya told journalists in Abuja that the raid was carried out based on an intelligence report that Igboho had stockpiled arms in his residence.

He explained that Igboho and his group, in the guise of the campaign for self-determination, had become well-armed and determined to undermine public order.

The agency presented seven AK-47 rifles allegedly recovered during the raid on Igboho’s house, as well as three pump-action guns, 30 fully charged AK-47 magazines, 5,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, five cutlasses, one jack-knife, one pen knife, two pistol holsters, a pair of binoculars, a wallet containing $5, local and international driving licences in his name, ATM cards, a German residence permit No. YO2N6K1NY bearing his name, two whistles, 50 cartridges and 18 walkie-talkies.

Others were three charm jackets/traditional body armour, two laptops, one Toshiba and one Compaq laptop, Igboho’s passport and those of his aides.

Afunaya claimed that five of the AK-47 rifles recovered from Igboho’s residence were snatched from the Nigeria Customs and Immigration personnel at Idi-Iroko, Ogun State.

One of our correspondents had reported moves by the secret police to track down Igboho’s financiers and supporters.

Reports said the intelligence agencies had geo-located Igboho’s hiding place but they could not storm the place for security reasons. However, Saturday PUNCH could not confirm this.

Again, alleged gunmen invade Ibarapa
Meanwhile, panic gripped residents of communities in Ibarapaland, Oyo State, on Friday night, as gunmen invaded Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of the state and allegedly opened fire on some persons.

Residents of the town told one of our correspondents that the gunmen, who allegedly dressed in Customs uniform, invaded the town around 7 pm, shot and killed an unspecified number of people they met at the entrance of the town before fleeing.

The eyewitnesses said they did not know the number of persons killed by the gunmen, but that one of the sources had claimed that one person was shot dead by the rampaging hoodlums.

The gunmen were said to have loaded themselves in four vehicles, two of which were a Toyota Hilux and Sienna.

Some of the sources claimed that hunters and vigilantes in the town, when they heard the gunshots, came out in hot pursuit of the hoodlums. The fleeing hoodlums were said to have escaped through Ayete.

The Secretary of Farmers Union, Mr Taiwo Adeagbo, who is popularly known as Akowe Agbe, also alleged that the attackers wore military uniforms.

Adeagbo said, “The attackers wore military uniforms. They opened fire on those they met when they entered the town. They shot for some minutes and before the hunters could get to where they were, they had fled.”

A resident of Ayete, who identified himself as Kamaru, also told Saturday PUNCH that the fleeing hoodlums met a motorcycle spare parts dealer on the road at Ayete and shot him to death.

He said, “The gunmen invaded Igangan again this evening (Friday) and killed some persons there. But we don’t know the actual number of those killed yet. They entered Ibarapa through Igangan, shot and killed some persons they met on the road. They wore Customs uniforms, so most people would not suspect they were criminals.

“They also killed somebody here in Ayete before they escaped. But our people are pursuing them and they are likely to catch up with them. I heard that they did not go straight but veered into a path but that road is not smooth.

“We later heard that they abandoned one of their vehicles and fled on foot into the forest. But we are living in fear now because we don’t know when they will strike again.”

The Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress in Oyo State, Mr Rotimi Olumo, also said his members in Ibarapa told him that the attackers wore Customs uniforms and killed one person in Igangan, one person in Ayete and a member of the Amotekun Corps at Igboora.

He said, “I issued a release about five days ago that the government should beef up security in the area. We heard that they would attack them before Eid el Kabir or on Sallah Day. Now, they have killed one person in Igangan, they killed another one in Ayete and killed another one at Igboora.

“I am receiving a briefing from our members there from time to time. The last one they shot dead at Igboora was said to be an Amotekun officer.”

The Commandant of the Amotekun in Oyo State, Col. Olayinka Olayanju (retd), could not be reached to comment on the attack. Repeated calls to his number indicated that it was engaged.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Adewale Osifeso, when contacted, told one of our correspondents that he would confirm it and return the call. But he had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Recall that suspected herdsmen had in June invaded Igangan where they set vehicles and houses ablaze, including the palace of the Asigangan of Igangan.

I'll prefer if we still use the 7.62x39mm caliber. Its more devastating on the enemy.
7.62x39mm caliber rifes can shoot lower caliber ammo too. I'll suggest that our military should try and make an indigenous rifle. We could make a version out of the beryls and AKs.

That's not TRUE.

The standard AK47 chambered with 7.62x39mm gives a huge amount of Recoil has less effective range ( 300 meters) and the bullet doesn't do more damage on the human body than 5.56×45mm.

If we use the HK G36 which is chambered with the 5.56x45mm. You are talking of effective range of 800 metres. Far less recoil much greater accuracy.

I chose to dis agree, the Taliban might be called a terrorist group but I see them more as a political group, remember they once ruled the whole of Afghanistan infact they were massively cheered into power then, secondly the Taliban is helped also by topography of where they operate, mountains valleys caves etc huge loads of them to hide in..

Boko is pure terror, a force only bent on destruction they too enjoy a little bit of aid from d society, also have sambisa and the Chad region to hide in, but Nigeria alone decimated Boko haram the Taliban I don't think has ever been wiped by USA, Russia, NATO, like we've done with Boko mind you we started the war lacking proper modern equipments to persecute asymetric warfare

It was painful, seeing the assassination of a Major-general of the Nigerian army. It is also a slap on the face of our army, which is the pride of our nation. If we can't secure the lives of our Generals, then no one is safe.
Technically, the security apparatus of our country has failed and collapsed. Our defence against the enemy is thin. Countless Nigerians losing their lives in "silly" circumstances. The security situation has been politicised. We had forgotten our purpose as a nation. "The fuel is still pouring into the fire".
Right now we are the gunpowder waiting to explode. Once it explodes, sub saharan africa will be worser than anything the middle east has seen.

A few weeks ago, I saw a tweet about how the NA is ill using armored tanks and other force multiplying platforms by using them to defend bases/garrisons rather than one being used to take out ISWAP's heavy equipment during offensive to make it easier for infantry to clear up the terrorists and that's the absolute truth.
I believe this is intentional, the military wants the war to drag on for several years so that they can get as much funding as possible.

Majority of NA's armored tanks, IFVs, MRAPs and others destroyed by BH/ISWAP were destroyed when the terrorist attack bases either by burning from inside or throwing a grenade inside while they are unmanned!!!

All these nonsense of "it's terrorists territory few kilometers outside of garrisoned towns" won't be happening if tanks and IFVs as support platforms are used for patrols rather than the suicide guntrucks. Those platforms are designed to withstand RPG hits and that's the best the terrorists have.

It was just a comment under a post about ISWAP's attack on NA base last month where they burnt a tank. I doubt I can find the comment again.

Mind you, seems the attack on kawuri was pretty large some of the pictures posted by the terrorists featured them burning a panhard and a mowag piranha AFV that both looked as though they've been out of operation several years ago.

The terrorists seem to be fielding more of the SPG-9 that was seen to be destroyed by NAF some weeks ago as seen in a propaganda video from one of their bases in sambisa. This time around, they positioned it under a tree to prevent it from being noticed by NAF grin

A modern tank will still come out fine from an attack from this type of weapon.
The range is even more ridiculous, fire once and you've given your location out to a tank/IFV/artillery and before they fire the next round, the terrorists should be gone.

My LGA has been attacked by ISWAP 10times in 5weeks (Ambushes and FOBs) Tho they’ve not attacked the Brigade in the main town. Should we sit down and watch knowing fully well they are picking up the small FOBs around and waiting for the big catch (My HQ Brigade)

Jihadists Wipe Out All Male Christians In Two Nigerien Towns, Women Flee

Jihadists in Niger Republic have wiped out all the male Christians in Fantio and Dolbel, two towns in the Tillabéri region in the south west.

Survivors of the attack, a group of women, with small children and babies fled to the Dori region of Burkina Faso.

AID TO THE CHURCH IN NEED (ACN), which reported the attacks, quoted the women as saying the terrorists attacked the towns twice, killing the men.

The two towns were abandoned by the rest of the inhabitants.

In Fantio, the jihadists took a statue of the Virgin Mary, liturgical books and musical instruments and burned them.

They then desecrated the Blessed Sacrament by throwing the sacred hosts on the ground and finally setting the church on fire.

This is the third parish in this part of Niger that has been abandoned due to terrorist attacks and incursions by extremist groups.

Survivors of the attacks fled to Niamey, the capital, to seek refuge in the parish of Téra, or cross the border into the Diocese of Dori in Burkina Faso.

Islamist terrorist groups began to extend their reach into Burkina Faso and Niger in 2015.

According to ACN’s Religious Freedom in the World Report 2021, the area has become one of the hotspots for militant jihadism in Africa.

In the meantime, the number of internally displaced persons in Burkina Faso has grown to about one million.
