As previously reported, BTS bounds in atop the July 24-dated Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts with "Permission to Dance." It's the South Korean superstars' fifth and fourth leader on the respective lists, extending their lead for the most since both surveys launched last September. But going deeper on both rankings, other international acts shine, earning their first entries.

Among them, Wizkid debuts on the Global 200 at No. 159 with "Essence," featuring Tems. Both acts hail from Nigeria, following Burna Boy to become the second and third artists from the country to hit the survey.

"Essence," from Wizkid's 2020 album Made in Largos, is primarily sung in English but includes lyrics in Yoruba. The African language is predominantly spoken in Southwestern Nigeria, precisely the location of his native, and album namesake, Largos. It is the first song featuring vocals in Yoruba to grace the Global charts.

This influx of Nigerian talent onto the Global 200 is not just a breakthrough for the country, but continues a burst of chart activity from Africa. Global chart action from the continent has mostly been limited to "Jerusalema" by Master KG featuring Nomcebo Zikode (both from South Africa) and Burna Boy (Nigeria), which has spent 45 weeks on the Global Excl. U.S. chart so far, peaking at No. 18 in October. Wes (Cameroon) was also co-billed with Robin Schulz on "Alane," which spent three weeks on the Global Excl. U.S. chart.

Wizkid and Burna Boy have especially become in-demand featured guests, showing up on albums by Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, Drake and others, but "Essence" represents a breakthrough with Wizkid being the lead artist, and, instead of asking one of his North American buddies to return the favor, spotlighting a fellow Nigerian act in Tems.

This week, "Essence" climbs 82-72 on the U.S. based Billboard Hot 100, while bouncing 30-24 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs tally.

Nearly all of the banging Afro Pop music from Nigeria have a touch of Yoruba. It is the official music language in Nigeria and beyond.

7 artists of Yoruba heritage got Grammy awards to their names and the Nollywood 50 highest-grossing movies of all time list is dominated by Yoruba producers.

Entertainment is Yoruba, it is reflective in the culture. Infact entertainment is one of the main reason why Nigeria is a brand because our music kinda give us good rep not only in Africa but beyond.

However, Wizzy Baba is an African icon and a face of the black continent. So we Yorubas don’t claim him alone, he is an African Icon.

Watch as how they will chest beat because they have finally mentioned their tribe, but when it’s Igbo peoples turn, all hell will let loose.

But sentiments aside, I’ve got to admit, Yoruba/afonjas are really there when it comes to cultural arts. Kudos to them. grin

That is what it is to them. The more he infuses Yoruba vibes in his songs, the better for him and his art. No need trying to sound like Drake or singing about women and good life life all day. Sing about your people, in their style and about them.

These are Burna's secret. He is not much of a singer, but his art reflects everything African.

It's actually better for his international career that his sound is recognized as unique and distinct from American pop or HipHop. That's his best route to international recognition and success. No African artist will ever compete successfully on the international scene by sounding like American artists.

Every other person have the right to celebrate and hail their ethnicities no problem, but when Ndigbo mention "Igbo amaka" on any Igbo achievement thread, some people start convulsing and smarting as if it is an insult

IGBO AMAKA does not mean that your people are not good enough,if I say my mum is the best mum in the world it doesent mean that yours is the worst

Igbo Amaka
