Dream Team Atlanta 1996 Feat Listed Among Most Memorable Football Moments At The Olympics

Nigeria’s U-23 Eagles popularly known as the Dream Team’s gold medal winning feat at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games, has been listed among five memorable football moments at the Olympics.

The video list, which was done in no particular order, was compiled and published on The Sun Football verified Twitter handle.

Under the guidance of Dutch coach Bonfrere Jo, the Dream Team shocked the world by becoming the first African country to win gold in the football event at the Olympics.

On parade for the Dream Team were legends like Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Okocha, Sunday Oliseh, Taribo West, Uche Okechukwu and Daniel Amokachi.

Others are Celestine Babayaro, Emmanuel Babayaro, Mobi Oparaku, Victor Ikpeba, Garba Lawal, Joseph Dosu, Tijani Babangida and Emmanuel Amuneke.

After qualifying from a group that had Hungary, Japan and Brazil, the Nigerian side beat Mexico in the quarter-finals.

They met Brazil in the semi-finals and avenged their group stage defeat by triumphing 4-3 thanks to a golden goal scored by Kanu in first half extra-time.

And in the final, a late strike from Amuneke secured a 3-2 win against Argentina.

Others listed by The Sun are Messi helping Argentina win the gold in Beijing 2008, Neymar scoring the winning penalty against Germany in Rio 2016, which gave Brazil a first ever football gold at the Olympics, Great Britain presenting a football team at the London 2012 Olympics after last doing so in Rome 1960 and Carlos Tevez scoring eight goals in six matches to help Argentina win gold in Athens 2004 Olympics.

Beating the then untouchable Brazil & humbling that drug-induced Argentina in the final with men twice their age is a feat that can never be replicated again.

25years ago, wow. No wonder there is a lot of negativity online in Naija, some didnt even get to witness the good times. They were born into these terrible times.

This was when it was sweet to be called a Nigerian. You travel and everyone asks you about Okocha, Amokachi etc.

Well, sigh. It is well.

Below is what all of us @[/b] remember about that Olympics.

Undoubtedly, as the thread says
It was the biggest win for Nigeria at the final of the [b]Atlanta 1996 Olympic football competition.

But even before reaching the final they had to see off the challenge of arguably one of the greatest Olympic football teams ever selected.

The semi-final against Brazil saw them overcome the shock of conceding a first-minute goal to run out 4-3 winners. Kanu struck home a memorable 90th minute equaliser to take the game into extra time before his golden goal killed the game and sealed an unforgettable victory for Nigeria.

It was the end of the road for Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Bebeto and Roberto Carlos, as Nigeria marched on into the final.

On 3 August, 86,117 spectators filled the Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia to watch Argentina take on Nigeria in the Olympic gold medal match.

Argentina took control of the tie, going ahead 2-1 with goals from Claudio Lopez and Hernan Crespo. But the Super Eagles were not to be denied.

In another incredible comeback, the Nigerian team first equalised with a 74th minute through a Daniel Amokachi strike before Emmanuel Amunike beat the offside trap to score a point-blank winner in the last minute of the game.

Nigeria had become the first-ever African nation to win an Olympic football gold medal. And they had done it in style.
It was a huge Barbecue parry all over the 4 corners of Nigeria back then.

The key players
 are not forgotten,
The 'Dream Team', as the Nigerian squad were nicknamed after their Atlanta triumph, relied on many stars in 1996. But perhaps the greatest of these were the attacking duo of Okocha and captain Kanu.

Okocha, for his part, won the Nigerian Footballer of the Year award a total of seven times between 1995 and 2005, and his impressive skill-set - he even had his own trick, 'the Okocha flick' named after him - has seen him gain legendary status both in Nigeria and across the world.

It says something, though, that the Nigerian Footballer of the Year for 1996 was the tall, languid attacker Kanu, who has since gone on to be considered one of the greatest players in African history. Kanu went on to win the UEFA Champions League and two African Player of the Year awards in a trophy-laden career.

But it would be impossible to talk about the gold medal-winning Super Eagles without giving a special mention to Emmanuel Amunike - the player whose last-minute heroics sealed victory for Nigeria in the most important match in their history

After that match anyone that fumbles either in words or action is referred to as a Bebeto. grin

Reason been that when Bebeto was being interviewed on the possible outcome of the match, he rather didn't talk about their next match with Nigeria but instead talked about Argentina, who had already qualified for final. Bebeto said, Nigeria can never stop them, that, Nigeria don't have the experience to defeat them. He said he is only afraid of Argentina, after they win Nigeria (when they haven't played the match yet).
But to everyone's surprise, Nigeria won them and also defeated their final rival, Argentina putting Bebeto to shame.
If you call anybody a Bebeto then, the bad eye the person go take look you, you won't like it
