This is an indication that Nigerians don't pay tax but want govt to provide paradise and utopia out of thin air.
We are doing ourselves bad if we don't create a working tax system.

When The Government charge VAT on the things you eat, ware and use, you are paying Tax. Government should use VAT judiciously.

BUHARI raised VAT from two and a half percent to seven and a half percent. What do they do with the extra? The Military, Police, DSS, BMF-BOKOISWA and all loot NIGERIA mercilessly.

BMF-BOKOISWA IS NOT INTERESTED IN PRODUCTIVITY, PRICING AND PROFITABILITY FOR CONTINOUS GROWTH.

The problem is that you even pay tax without knowing it, in form of VAT.
But the tax net does not cover the informal sector where the real part of the Nigerian economy is
Widening the tax net will bring a lot of revenue into government coffers.

I accept the fact that they will steal a lot of it but at the same time there will be more money for projects and they wouldn't have to borrow so much. That's the only solution to our economic problem. Nigeria is broke and things are about to worsen.

Very true

Nigeria has successfully diversified her economy. This effort has been on for the past 6years but gathered momentum in the last 2years of the Next Level Agenda.

Now, Nigeria can boast of internally generated revenue from non-oil sectors such as :
1. Mass kidnapping of School Children
2. BANDITRY
3. Herdsmen
4. Boko Haram
5. Corruption

This is exactly the diversification they have achieved (all diversification na diversification na)

It's going to be hard for Nigeria to work with the way the country is structured. As long as the North remains a major determining factor in our politics, forget it.

No, that is not what he has been preaching. He keeps saying Nigeria's revenue is small because the GDP is fake.

I have corrected him severally that what Nigeria needs to do is to widen the tax net and bring in the informal sector. He didn't even know what I was talking about.

Even if the South takes power completely, the problem as you have put it is simple...we are not taxing enough people.

Also, our problem is that we are a resource dependent country. We sell resources, share the income and import with the income. It is the same for most African coutnries without a Hausa fulani population, and why we are in debt, and not earning enough.

Maybe, maybe not.
But then, the South is more entrepreneurial than the North and the level of competence here is higher than in the north. The South even as useless as our governors seem to be, they still appear to be performing better than the northern politicians.

If the north has less power in terms of choosing our national leaders, we would be able to choose leaders with far less primordial and ethnic attitudes than what the north picks. I mean leaders who can at least give a semblance of sanity to governance in Nigeria.
Buhari alone has done more damage to our economy and society than Obasanjo and Jonathan combined.

Not making people pay tax will only worsen things as you can see. Those in power no send. They will still see money to loot no matter how small the revenue is. Highest, they will take loans like Buhari is doing and embezzle it. grin
Yet, you are the one that will pay back the loan.

The enterprises in the South mostly center on importing and selling imported stuff. Ironically, the same happens up North. And the result is all the same...we don't make anything, we import stuff we make self....and we lose dollars, and get broke...and then take loans to make the diffierence.

It isn't about 'who chooses our leaders' for me. Even if it was up to the South to choose leaders, the way most Nigerians think....we should share money (and most criticism of our leaders is based on how they share money really)...at the end of the day, the Southern leaders would be just like the Northern leaders. Run an economy based on sharing money

We have to stop relying on oil and start relying on industrial growth, more taxes, and less corruption.(Gowon one of your norhterners also developed an industrial development plan for Nigeria...which if we had followed might have helped us out of our revenue dependency by now)

Keep in mind that many African countries are just as broke as we are...and most of them, as far as I know, have no Northerners in charge or running the country. When your income is dependent on raw materials whose prices you do not control....you go broke when prices fall below replacement/sustenance (Zambia is 80% Christian, has no Hausas as far as we know...and is broke like Nigeria because they rely on copper...and the last time copper prices were high enough to sustain their economy was in 2006-11)

Plus VAT plus the recent increase and our entire earnings from crude oil, our total $30bn budget is far less than what our juniors, smaller African countries are getting from their smaller GDP. They have $70 - $150bn.
How can we then hope to put as much resources into public education, infrastructure and healthcare to the level of those smaller African countries? Even when we have bigger responsibilities and needs due to population?

This fact is irrespective of the person in power. Even if you make corruption 0%, you won't get b$100bn worth of merchandise if you enter the market with $30bn.

In which part of the planet do you collect income tax from people who have no income?

The $450bn GDP we declare is it not human being, Nigerians who generate the wealth? That is what every country tax and why world bank is talking of tax to GDP ratio. Our ratio is 6℅, Ghana is 16%, Egypt and South Africa is 28%, and they all have smaller GDP. But they end up with bigger revenue apart from Ghana with tiny GDP.

Even Lagos state is underperforming in tax collection when compared to African cities like Johannesburg.

But Lagos is the undisputed champion when compared to other horribly run Nigerian states that can't survive or pay salaries without federal largess. How can people own the state when an external party funds it?

The poorest thinkers in this country are found among those who support this govt.

Otherwise how can someone open his mouth to say that Nigerians should be taxed more when we are by far the most highly (indirect) taxed populace in the world!

Running generators is an indirect tax since the deceptions in APC promised the gullible ones power within 6 months of ascending the throne. Up until a few months ago everybody who wanted a prepaid meter had to pay through the nose to get one.

A small kiosk pays the local govt for a license to operate, it doesn't end there. The boys will come around for levy, then one day the state govt comes to bulldoze the place.

While the road is being repaired the owner of a filling station is forced to give the construction guys money etc otherwise they will purposely block the gates of the station.

You Know Nothing

n the issue of macroeconomic stability, the minister said, “Right now, the economy is weak, growth is fragile, but we are hoping growth will improve as we begin to look at the policies that we have on ground and do policy reforms to attract both local and foreign investments.”

When you strangle people and frustrate every form of income generation, this is what you get! Eleribu government full of greedy, wicked sons of bi*ches with no moral compass. I hate to say it but what Nigeria needs is Abacha 2.0, Nigeria does not need any useless democracy, it's just a license to loot more aggressively.

Let's compare the economy under Abacha to right now under Buhari and if we didn't know better, one might think Abacha's regime was the democratic one and Buhari's regime was carved out of North Korea.
