#PressRelease #DHQUpdate MAJOR GENERAL SAWYERR TAKES-OVER AS DEFENCE SPOKESMAN... Cautions Against Sensational Journalism The newly appointed Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major General Benjamin Olufemi Sawyerr has called on the Nigerian media to guide against sensational reportage which seeks to undermine national security. Maj Gen Sawyerr gave the charge while takingover as the new spokesman of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), in a brief ceremony held today, 30 July, 2021 at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), Abuja. The DDI who described the media as a vital component in the entire process of any campaign plan, either conventional or asymmetric warfare, solicited media operators support in all spectrums towards jettisoning sensational headlines that give undue publicity to perpetrators of criminal acts that tend to undermine national security. He however, urged the media to be objective, fair and balanced in their reportage. Maj Gen Sawyerr, further explained his responsibilities as the new image maker of the AFN to include projecting and galvanizing media and citizens support for all military operations. He noted that the AFN in synergy with other security agencies have continued to work round the clock in surmounting the various security threats. These security challenges, he said, would in no distant time be a thing of the past, as a result of the positive feelers emanating from the theatres of operation. He commended the efforts of the Deputy Director, Defence Information, Air Commodore Wap Martin Maigida for professionally piloting the affairs of the Directorate while acting as Defence spokesman. He pledged to leverage on the successes recorded as well as the experience gathered over the years. The immediate past Acting DDI, Air Cdre Maigida, earlier in his remarks, expressed gratitude to the CDS for his unflinching supports during his tenure. He commended the media, particularly, the Defence Correspondents for their unwavering support and cooperation throughout his tenure and urged them to redouble their efforts in projecting the positive image of the AFN in the quest of ensuring national security. The occasion was witnessed by senior media practitioners. Until his recent appointment, Maj Gen Sawyerr was the Commandant Nigerian Army Armour School, in Bauchi State. FBI investigating Nigeria's 'super cop' in Instagram influencer HushPuppi fraud case Abuja, Nigeria(CNN) A high-ranking Nigerian police officer is being investigated by the FBI for allegedly making an arrest at the request of Instagram influencer Ramon Abbas, who has pleaded guilty to money laundering, according to the US Justice Department. Nigerian police spokesman Frank Mba sent a statement to CNN confirming that they received an indictment for Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari from the FBI and an internal investigation has been ordered. "Sequel to the receipt of allegations and indictment processes from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) against one of the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, DCP Abba Kyari, the Inspector General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba ... has ordered an internal review of the allegations," the statement said. 'Arranged arrest' Court documents cited by the Justice Department allege an undisclosed sum was paid to Kyari by Abbas, who pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering through cybercrime schemes on April 20, according to documents which were only unsealed Wednesday. Abbas also admitted his involvement in a conspiracy to defraud a Qatari businessman of more than $1 million, the US Justice Department said in a Wednesday statement. The alleged scam nearly fell apart after one of the group, Kelly Chibuzo Vincent, tried to tip-off their Qatari victim about the million-dollar fraud, the Justice Department said in the court papers. Abbas is accused of arranging to have Vincent jailed in Nigeria by Kyari, "who is alleged to have arranged for Vincent to be arrested and jailed at Abbas' behest, and then sent Abbas photographs of Vincent after his arrest," according to the court documents. Kyari, 46, is a highly-decorated officer, who was conferred with a Presidential medal for courage from Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari. The FBI alleges he sent Abbas bank details for an account where he could paid for agreeing to arrest Vincent. They succeeded in defrauding the unnamed businessman of $1.1m and part of the stolen money was used to "purchase a Richard Mille RM11-03 watch, which was hand delivered to Abbas in Dubai and subsequently appeared in Hushpuppi's social media posts," prosecutors said. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/07/30/africa/kyari-hushpuppi-investigated-fbi-intl/index.html We plenty wey Kyari go sue. |
