British Govt was just cool, treated the matter as a normal right to protest, sympathised with the protesters and took the heat out of the situation, and did not try to turn the country against the protesters even when some foolish protesters were trying to take down Churchill's statue. They even let them take down the slave trader's statues but sent the Police to protect the likes of Churchill and Nelson whose only crime was making racist statements. The matter died down thanks to the professional and sympathetic response of the British Govt to an issue that even has nothing to do with them.

I am a conservative and I have never heard of Tommy Robinson before today, when you search this thread, the first person to mention Tommy Robinson's name was probably someone who identified as a liberal. Plenty American conservatives don't even know him or have heard his name before

There used to be people like Vice President Spiro Agnew and President Ford after Nixon retired that flew the flag of conservativism without kowtowing to Nazis and Klans. This new straits of nazi loving conservatism started with Reagan when he started his campaign fir presidency in a town called Philadelphia in Mississippi which is a hot bed of racism where four civil rights workers were summarily executed in the 60s for their civil rights work. Real Conservatism is not racism and Trumpism is racism and that's where majority of Republicans are now. I am aware of those comments Boris made and that was 20 years ago. I lived under Boris as my Mayor in London and that was our fear when we went for Mayoral elections. Boris apologised profusely and ran a very inclusive Government in language and positioning that left me in no doubt he can be trusted to keep citizens calm on matters of race.

Now I don't care if anyone has prejudices personally, as long as you recognise the responsibility of leadership and be a leader to all, and not make us feel like public life is not a safe space for us. We have left leaning people on this thread from UK like Budaatum. You can ask them if they ever feel threatened by Boris. I see those Boris comments as similar to Biden comments about mixed schools back in the 1970s. What matters is how he has comported himself in public life to the point we can all trust him when it comes to matters of our safety and equity. Boris is a wide boy like Prince Harry and Prince Phillip who made similar comments back in the day, but we won't keep beating Harry with that same stick today because his actions and utterances over a long period show he has changed.
