It is still 2021 but meetings, consultations and whatnot are already in force for politicians hoping to clinch seats of power in 2023. Soon enough, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will give the all clear for electioneering campaigns to begin and when that happens, we will see politicians move from city to city and from state to state to make promises to citizens in a bid to secure their votes.

Earlier today, I saw an election campaign poster of the first democratically elected President of Nigeria, Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, wherein he promised water, electricity, qualitative education among other things. The said election campaign poster dates back to 1983.

As elder statesman, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida has listed some of the qualities he wishes to see in the person who will become the next President of Nigeria, other well-meaning Nigerians wish, nay, desire to have a man or woman who will be brave enough to tackle issues bedevilling the country, be it political, economic, social or security.

Good roads, portable water, and electricity are as basic as the word itself. They are rights of every citizen but those have proved a holy grail for our politicians.

Therefore, beyond good roads, water and electricity, whoever wishes to become the next President of Nigeria should do well to create jobs/employment, provide food and security, as these are the three basic needs of almost every Nigerian citizen today.

Insecurity is a major challenge plaguing the country. From North to South, to the East, there are pockets of insecurity. If it is not Boko Haram, it is killer herdmen, banditary, kidnapping or unknown gunmen.

Despite the huge amount of money expended in the fight against insurgency and the lives of gallant soldiers lost, groups like Boko Haram/ISWAP and bandits still hold sway in parts of north Nigeria. When you move down south, you hear about kidnappers and unknown gunmen.

Lately, law enforcement agents have become targets, as we have witnessed several attacks that took the lives of these men and women in uniform.
