I think specialized units have been given leeway to get away with non-standardized gear. A unit in Liboi can have tottaly different kit from another one in Kiunga yet they are from the same regiment.

Thanks for the reply but I think there might be more to it because that is a basic headgear. There are newer better Chinese kit.
I think the current Ukrainian body armor is not good because the Ukrainians themselves don't use it because they say it's substandard

SANDF is not suddenly using AK's. Special Forces on the other hand are doing what they've always been doing.
No other units in the SANDF use AK's.

Part of the answer to your question is what round are you most likely to come across where they are......556 or 762?

As rocketZA explains, it's not sudden. Go back to all the old photos of SF in Angola, you'll see them using AKs. Many reasons:
1) if a small team is doing reconnaissance behind enemy lines, should they get into a contact, using same equipment as enemy will temporarily prevent enemy from immediately identifying who they fought against; no R5 shell casings to id them as Saffers, buying the small team precious time to escape and evade; this is why SF has to master proficiency in foreign weapons, as they're expected to use what the enemy uses;

2) 7.62 has better penetration than 5.56 out in the bush;

3) this is frowned upon on account of booby traps, but in a desperate situation, you can also scavenge for more ammo from dead enemies.

All of this applies to SF only; regular troops use R4s.
