Five persons were crushed to death by a fully loaded petrol tanker at Celica area on new Ife-Ibadan road, Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State.

It was gathered that the tanker lost control, rammed into a Micra car and plunged into a nearby ditch with the Micra car on Monday, August 9.

Mrs Uche Chukwurah, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander in the state, who confirmed the incident in an interview with NAN, described the accident as fatal, resulting in the death of five persons, three male and two female adults.

She said that the accident involved two vehicles which included a fully loaded petroleum tanker and a Micra taxi car.

The sector commander said that the tanker had a brake failure, lost control and rammed into the Micra car leading to the death of all passengers in the Micra car.

"The whole people inside the Micra car crashed to death and nobody was rescued alive. The deceased has been deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital mortuary,” she said.
Chukwurah further said that men of the Fire Service were also at the scene to prevent fire outbreaks in the area.

It is no longer surprising the rate at which articulated vehicles fail brake and lose control at the cost of human lives.

These are needless deaths that can be prevented with the right policy/regulations. Most of these trucks on our roads have outlived their lifespan, with many of them manufactured during World War 2.

The FRSC alongside other relevant agencies need to come up with a framework to phase out these "death traps on wheels" by ensuring only trucks with a maximum of 10yrs can ply our roads. The drivers also need proper training, background checks, and tracking to ensure more accountability and safer driving .

Until this is done, tragic accidents like this will continue ad infinitum.

Heavy duty vehicles are always losing control and killing people in Nigeria, If it's not Dangote truck then it is fuel tanker. It seems some of the drivers are on drugs or the vehicles are faulty and not fit to operate on the highway, RIP to the dead

abeg make una stop all these ritual talks...big vehicles are more prone to break failures because of the huge loads they move with..
even with s faulty break, d careless drivers still move with high speed on bad roads all because they want to save time n make delivery on time for more incentives..
I don't like it wenever I hear dangote's name affiliated with rituals because he do employ careless drivers to save cost n mind you, no matter d level of ritualism dt an individual or a company does, he can never get to d level of dangote in this life..

People will see this as just accident, after all accidents do happen but no, this is as a result of a failed system.
Imagine a situation where the regulatory agencies that are supposed to oversee that these vehicles are road worthy and are safe to ply our roads just sits in their offices and issue certificates without setting eyes on these vehicles, sometimes papers are even gotten via phone calls.smh
