I came too early, Okocha jokes following Messi’s £1million weekly pay

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, declared yesterday that his footballing days ‘came too early.’ He was reacting to news of Lionel Messi’s weekly take home of £1 million at Paris St-Germain.

After more than 20 years, 778 games, 672 goals, 35 trophies, including 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues and numerous personal records and honours, Messi finally left Barcelona to pitch his tent with the French giant, PSG.

Okocha, a quick and skillful playmaker, who is considered as one of the best Nigerian footballers and players to come out of African continent, told The Guardian in a telephone chat soon after the news of Messi’s big pay broke out that his time as a footballer came too early.

“I came too early and Messi came at the right time,” Okocha joked. “If I was paid such amount of money in my playing days, maybe I would have stayed back in France forever. I wouldn’t have thought of coming to Nigeria.”

Jay Jay Okocha’s magical display lured many Nigerian fans to French League in his playing days. In 1998, the Nigerian set a transfer record when he left Fenerbahce in Turkey to PSG in France on a fee of £12.4 million, which was the highest by an African player at that time. He left PSG for Bolton Wonderers in England in 2002 on a free transfer.

For many Nigerian fans, Okocha’s magical skills on the field of play is comparable to whatever Messi offers in present day football.

Messi, who has won Ballon d’Or six times, now prepares himself for a new life in Paris, after he parted ways with Barcelona. He said he feels betrayed by the club he has given so much to. Barcelona had asked Messi to accept a 50 percent reduction in wages, which he accepted without even trying to negotiate it.

But the club later told him to leave, claiming that getting the Argentine to remain in Catalonia would ruin the club.

Even as he is joking about it but it is quite the truth. Jay Jay would have been one of the highest paid players in the world if he was still playing and at his prime

Africans and money consciousness, dribbling without sense with his funny kind of leg over okocha tried but he is just adverage that d truth. if you watch messi he dribble when the time arises, pass when the time arises, chip when he is in the right position go and watch messi in the days of xavi and inestia. This guy play football to perfection who could have taught they can scored 50 goals a season playing deep, he redefine football as a player you can't hate messi and love football he deserve the money he is getting. The painful thing is that there is no player coming up who operate deep and still create chances and still dribble and score magnifecent goals I taught salah was like messi until I watch closely and find out they can never be messi them never born that persoooon!. As for ronaldo mbappe plays similar but I doubt if he close to ronaldo work rate and free kicks

what other "conscious" should he have? Is to just be thrilling fans alone? Rashid Yekini thrilled fans, yet went "broke" later in life. While thrilling fans, charge for your services. You can't just make people happy and then become broke....

Okocha is all about tricks with a negligible number of end results. He is in the same bracket as present day Ben Arfa, Isco, Ndombele, Maxim of Newcastle and the rest.

He is only held in high regards by Nigerians out of sentiment.

Before you come to my mention and start countering with emotions, ask yourself......

As an attacking midfielder with almost non existent defensive responsibilities, how many goals or assists did he clock during his career? And how many high ranked clubs ever placed a bid for his services?

During his time odegbami and his sets would have said the same thing.
In 20 years time, Messi and Ronaldo will say the same thing by the time they hear the wages of footballers by then.

...or maybe he came as an African.

Okocha would easily have been in contention for the world best if he was an European in his playing days.
