Top 5 Artificial Intelligence Applications in Construction

The construction industry, being one of the oldest and very important industries in the world, was slow to embrace technologies compared to other industries, making it one of the most under-digitized industries in the world. However, in the last decade, the industry has evolved with emerging trends and technologies that changed the way designs and plans are made, and structures are built.

Technological tools have also put construction experts on their toes to keep up with the continuing evolution in the industry, and make the construction process more efficient and construction projects safer, as well as, increasing productivity. Technology has also led to employment in the industry as about 7 percent of the world’s labour force is reportedly employed on the industry.

Companies in the industries have recently started using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in different ways such as optimizing work schedules, improving workplace safety, and keeping a secure watch on construction facilities, to further make construction more innovative and efficient.

Artificial Intelligence Technologies and Construction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is used to describe an instance when machine mimics human cognitive functions, like problem-solving, pattern recognition, and learning. The application of AI technologies in the construction industry is made possible through the emergence of deep learning, Machine Learning (ML), and natural language processing.

Machine Learning is a field of artificial intelligence that uses statistical techniques to give computer systems the ability to learn from data, without being explicitly programmed. A machine becomes better at understanding and providing insights as it is exposed to more data.

Deep learning, on the other hand, depends on algorithms that don’t need manual administration. It uses sets of accessible information and the computing power of computers.

Natural language processing is derived from machine learning and deep learning. Its purpose is to recognize speech. It has helped us to work with enormous data sets, lexical, and syntactic.

These three systems have improved the artificial intelligence devices in the field of image recognition, text, voice, automatic robots, and decision making.

Benefits of Artificial Intelligence Technologies and Construction
The benefits AI technologies can bring to the construction industry include prevention of overruns, possibility of achieving better design of buildings through generative design, risk mitigation, proper project planning, increase in project productivity, construction safety, and making off-site construction possible. AI technologies also address labour shortages, and many more.

Top Five Applications of Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Construction

Five applications of artificial intelligence in construction are discussed in the section below.

AI for Building Designs
BIM is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a building. It is the development and use of a computer software model to simulate the construction and operation of a facility, in order to make decisions and improve the process of delivering the facility.

BIM is a process that improves how architects and engineers design and construct buildings. Through BIM authoring tools, architects can create a digital 3D model of the building, allowing them to see a representation of what it will look like and how it will operate from the design stage to construction, commissioning, ownership, management, operation, maintenance use, demolition and reuse of built assets. The data developed by BIM through the lifecycle of a construction project can be used to create: parametric relationships and model element dependency; computational design; space planning; energy analysis; light and daylight analysis; display complex spatial relationships; calculate the cost and number of required building materials; virtual conflict detection and resolution; and extended reality.

BIM offers massive benefits in the architecture and construction industry both directly and indirectly. It enables ease of information exchange across the entire value chain; saves time and cost; improves quality; creates clarity and accountability in decision making, increased sustainability; and improved end-user/customer satisfaction. BIM improves collaboration and creates efficiency in workflow; it enhances visualization prior to construction, enables easier project management; and reduces waste and cost.

AI for Construction Safety
There is a new AI technique that was developed using algorithms of the future. It is called reinforcement learning. It’s a technique that permits algorithms to learn from field experiments. It surveys endless combinations and options based upon the use of data from similar projects undertaken in the past. It also helps in project planning since it provides the best possible solution and rectifies itself over time.

AI for Improving Productivity
There are self-driven construction equipment like concrete pouring machines, automatic welding machines, robotic bricklaying, and automatic building demolition machines that can perform monotonous activities more productively than humans.
For instance, preliminary site preparation or excavation work can be performed by automatic or semi-automatic bulldozers. These bulldozers can set up the construction site with the assistance of a human programmer to provide the exact specifications required by the construction drawings.

This can remove the requirement of the human factor in the construction work and reduce the overall time needed to finish the project.

AI for Prevention of Cost Overruns
One of the challenges of the construction industry is spending more than the allocated budget. So, artificial neural networks are used to predict cost overruns. The neural network predicts the cost overruns based on the factors like the type of contract, size of the project, and competence of the project leader.

Artificial intelligence assists workers in giving remote training on material handling, which helps the workers to improve their knowledge and skills rapidly. This reduces the time required to install new assets onto projects and facilitates early project delivery.

Conclusion

AI technologies offer many benefits that the construction industry can tap into. AI technologies can help prevent overruns, achieve better design of buildings through generative design, mitigate risk, plan projects properly, increase project productivity, guarantee safety during construction, and reduce time spent on a project.

Someone is broke and we (I mean everyone) are paying for it.

Sir, I’m sure you know this.

When prices rise, low and middle-class families pay. Wealthy families profit.
This is currently happening in Nigeria without damning the consequences.

The powerful players are hiking prices of commodities to maximize their profit and as a result household incomes are transferred from the poor and middle class to the wealthy.

If I may ask, what exactly is the reason for the increase in the price of cement in Nigeria?

I live just few minutes away from one of the oldest plants in the country. I can debunk all myths in split second.

It’s pretty easy for the big players in Nigeria to set monopolistic pricing that takes a bite out of every income group’s share of our national income in a bid to survive takeover by AMCON, with the exception of the top 10%, whose incomes rise.

Baba you won’t understand because you fall among the TOP 10% whose income rise grin grin grin or you may understand and just say “What shall we say unto the Lord?” because you did nothing wrong and you’re just lucky like every other top 10% who are a beneficiary of the wealth transfer.

Hmmm I think your analysis is far fetched

And dangote being under pressure/ with problems is also making Lafarge and bua increase there prices ?

All the other inputs of building Materials like tiles , wires , aluminum windows , roofing ,glass , etc is caused by this same dangote problems?

Diesel is almost 300 for god sake , transfer dollar is about 520 now and still not readily available , inflation is running at 17 % , port congestion is there . this are some of the issues confronting manufacturers and importers , Commodity prices are also rising worldwide, copper , steel etc , freight from india , china are at record high . 40 feet from china was about 5k dollars a year ago , it’s about 14k now

I use about 2k liters of diesel daily for my operation and you don’t expect me to increase prices with all I stated above .

Prices are rising simply because of inflation , devaluation and more adverse business conditions . I do agree however that some are taking advantage ,oligopoly in the cement industry has been there for a long time, dint start in the last 5 years

Sashhh!!!! I’m only a consultant on that project and my job is to make things work.
I’ve seen many people play this role and the only thing they knew is to find fault. grin grin

Your client, my friend and a brother is 100% the opposite of my client that I shared his story few days ago.

When he approached me in January that he wants to start this project. He said “I’d like you to work with me.”
He didn’t try to play on my intelligence. He needed help in many areas and I offered him all the necessary support without holding back anything.

He wanted me to share some cost-saving strategies with him and I did and show him how to achieve more with less.

Make I no lie, him buy me fish and stout and we go clubbing grin

_____

6 months later, our 30 flats multi-dwelling project is done!

Guess what? Your client is a first timer but a very good guy with a very large heart.
I’m not surprised this project was completed in record time.

Congrats to our so so silent client!

More wins @gbadexy and Regal paints.

More bigger builds to our silent client and more wins for us all.

My point exactly.

The rich people can do things to get even richer during inflation. For example they can borrow money to fund projects or buy real estate (lands etc).
They can reduce some of their product sizes (Dangote Sugar) to stay afloat in the face of inflation.

The poor have no choice.

My opinion.. some avoidable assumptions were made by both parties during this project and it has unintended consequences, financially,
Intentions are difficult to prove, so let’s not dwell on it.
Here is a suggestion. Check how much it would cost to remedy the situation; in terms of specific design, materials repainting and labour. It’s going to be painful we know. Be very honest about it and present the cost for deliberation. Maybe a 50/ 50 formula from both sides,
Redeem your name
Learn your lesson
Move on.
Lessons derived ; always send extensive pictures of sample work
Personally inspected all work before finishing
Avoid using stock pictures for sample where possible
Don’t make any assumptions when communicating
Don’t take more work than you can handle as your trade has to do with details.

On a side note. I had wanted you to visit my country home mason for all the metal work soon but these development shouldn’t be a yardstick for your performance.

You are free to disregard these unsolicited suggestions.

Good suggestion

I carefully went through the quote
The labour rates are fair except for reinforcement that's highly overpriced. On the quantity of materials, there are some sections that are needlessly high e.g 3500 blocks for a measured area of 279sqm is high. Also, cement quantities are excessively high. In order to get a fair estimate, please attach your architectural and structural drawings.

Thanks.

Quantity Surveyor.

It’s a simple fix.

With the door open, you’ll see a screw that you’ll remove. Once removed the key mechanism can be removed. Take it to a suitable and related merchant to purchase a matching replacement.

Bang it back in and Bob’s your Uncle.

We Test both waste and water supply pipes to ensure water tightness

Hydrostatic testing of waste and AC condensate pipes in slab, after 24hrs the level of the water still remained the same, if you check it month or years to come, the water must be there,

if there's any leaking joint, it will be quickly shown, don't assume that your pipes in slab are 100% water right, at least at every 100 fittings joint there probability that 1 point will leak
