That’s a whole lot of money. In saner climes, it will be the government dragging Shell to court or sanctioning them for the environmental hazard caused by their activities.
Instead, it’s a bunch of innocent farmers, of which 2 have died.

The government is busy chasing Kanu and Igboho

Now that the money has arrived, you’ll see government start showing muscle. They’ll start fighting for custody and distribution of the money and perhaps She’ll will bow to pressure. If they win, before a penny reaches the people $50 million has been spent running liaison offices and settling traditional rulers and people who can cause trouble… all these while the people suffer

Chicken change! How many billions did Chevron pay for the spillage in America some years back? They're paying pittance here for a generational destruction of a country's ecosystem...Shell should be forced out of Nigeria

Ken Saro Wiwa's death wasn't in vain.

Its a shame most of the money will enter the pockets of the elites and their boys.

Food for cabal. I'd suggest that they contract a company to clean up oil spills and pay them instead.

In America, they dispose their oil, solvents, rainwater from oil and gas plant company inside a well.

The well is really really deep. I do not know if in Nigeria we dispose our trash oil deep into the ground.

What about the thousands of poor villagers who go pilfer oil from the pipelines and some even have their ramshackle "refineries" to process stolen crude? You should do equal justice and hang 'em too.

ChiefSosa:

Honestly, oil companies have been playing several tricks for a long long time. They're just in for the money without putting into consideration the condition of the location of drilling or the dwellers.
I don't even think $111M is enough, we all know they won't get every penny!
Imagine the damage to Aquatic life, Farm lands, wildlife, destruction of the mangrove, etc that have been going on for years. Even the residents have been exposed to dangerous and toxic conditions. Their lifespan is affected. Their skin and organs are deeply affected.
Those affected communities need more than that $111M.

BP paid $20 billion for its spill in the Gulf of Mexico. In saner countries and considering the length of time Shell has been wrecking havoc in those communities, a settlement of $1 billion would be the starting point. But you already know the government and politicians are in bed with BP already and this monies is going to be paid out to be looted anyways so I guess the amount is of no consequence.
