Gulf of Guinea Partners Complete Maritime Security Exercise

GULF OF GUINEA –

The Expeditionary Sea Base USS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB 4) conducted a combined maritime security capabilities exercise with the Nigerian Navy, the Spanish Navy, and members of Ghana’s Special Boat Squadron (SBS), Aug. 11, 2021.

The combined exercise consisted of maritime interdiction operations, Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) scenarios, fleet maneuvering, and helicopter insertion and casualty evacuations. Alongside Hershel “Woody” Williams, participating ships included Nigerian Navy ships NNS Prosperity, NNS Nguru, NNS Ekulu, NNS Osun, NNS Ose, and the Spanish Navy ship SPS Vigia, as well as the Nigerian Navy’s Regional Maritime Awareness Center at Western Naval Command.

“These maritime training operations required the collaboration of not one, but three countries’ navies, all working together simultaneously,” Capt. Chad Graham, commanding officer, USS Hershel “Woody” Williams, said. “Collaborative operations like this offer invaluable experience for my crew in the present, but they also allow us to be more efficient and capable in future operations with our partners in the region.”

This exercise follows the two-day maritime planning event held with leaders from the Nigerian Navy. During their port visit, the crew also participated in community relations activities including a basketball game, ship tours and painting at the Lagos State Model Nursery and Primary School. Nigeria maintains the largest navy in the Gulf of Guinea region and is critical to security and stability in Africa.

The U.S. Navy routinely trains with allied and partner nations to enhance maritime capabilities and interoperability by establishing communication and safety standards that strengthen regional maritime security.

“The exercises we conducted this week show our commitment to the mutual goal of countering maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea, and how we can work together to achieve it,” Graham said.

USS Hershel “Woody” Williams is the first warship permanently assigned to the U.S. Africa Command area of responsibility. The U.S. shares a common interest with African partner nations in ensuring security, safety, and freedom of navigation on the waters surrounding the continent, because these waters are critical for Africa’s prosperity and access to global markets.

For over 70 years, U.S. Sixth Fleet forces have forged strategic relationships with our allies and partners and solidified a foundation of shared values, experiences, and vision aimed at preserving security and stability.

The ESB ship class is a highly flexible platform that may be used across a broad range of military operations. Acting as a mobile sea base, they are part of the critical access infrastructure that supports the deployment of forces and supplies to support missions assigned.

U.S. Sixth Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.

An average Nigerian doesn't want to read anything good about Nigeria. When it's bad news or an image tarnishing one, they come online to lament and show displeasure but if it's just a normal news devoid of any bad thing, they take their time to look for a fault!

Oh My God! I hope we are not going to have another round of ignorance on this thread cos it seems that there are people who don't know what a patrol boat is or the functions of the different types of vessels in a navy.

The Nigerian leaders/government maladministration, waste, theft, insecurity etc are daily bad news, they are predictable the fund for advanced/better naval ship/boat has been stolen, so an average Nigerian expect to see something lower in quality for training than her peers. A government must win citizen trust to expect patriotism, so don't blame the average Nigerian for guessing right!

These are US Navy patrol boats. Will you say that the US Navy is using balloons??

Will you use frigates like NNS Aradu, NNS Okpabana, NNS Thunder, etc to patrol riverine and shallow littoral waters?? Do these people even know the difference between an expeditionary mobile base and a patrol boat? Will you use an expeditionary mobile base to fight pirates in an environment like the Niger Delta?? Do you know that the purpose of this exercise is to practice boarding, search and seizure manoeuvres?? Do you know the exact nature of threats that the Nigerian Navy has to fight against or are you just engaging in comic book fantasies??

Good God!

In recent years the Niger Delta has overtaken the Horn of Africa as the region with the greatest amount of pirate attacks. The US, Spain, Ghana and other nations would not have been participating in this exercise if it was not important and necessary.

A lot of the goods that we use are imported by ships. Some shipping companies do not want to visit some ports because they are afraid of attacks by pirates.

The Patrol boat are barely escorting the US vessel to the high sea, that not a drill as you can see them saluting each other

Again the drill is between US Navy and Nigeria Navy SBS (Special Boat Service) Navy's elite squad

Please read this thread to see why exercises like this are important. This is the story of Boris Oyebanji, a Nigerian mariner, whose ship was hijacked by pirates from the Niger Delta while he was sailing off the coast of Equatorial Guinea (he had to have a Nigerian Navy escort when he left Nigeria, but the Navy ship returned to base when he got to Equato-Guinean waters. The pirates attacked after the Nigerian Navy ship had left).

The pirates then used him to attack another ship (I think it was a Spanish ship), then the Equato-Guinean Navy mistook him for a pirate and he was detained. The Nigerians authorities had to use a lot of diplomatic effort to get him released.

Pirates when dey use speed boat na him America want come fight? These guys only rub traders and maybe some unarmed vessels, that's if they are from Nigeria and I can't say for other Countries. Tackling issues like this will only take a couple of weeks and a maximum of 3months, unless our territorial Waters are not properly guarded.
