Most of the tectonic plates causing earthquakes goes through their region, just like japan and other earthquake prone region, we are just lucky in africa , these plates don't go through some part of africa continent, if not, the disaster would have been extremely terrible, most of the new generation seeing now are made with earthquake protective technology....
